just saw this and i thought it was pretty nice..a nice movie postcard of paris. it's made out of short episodes that take place in various parts of paris and they make a nice whole. and soundtrack makes it even nicer ofcourse..just a lovely easy watching thing with some witty and fun bits. nice indeed : )

Watched the start of it last night.
The dude in the Metro is funny as fuck.
Also the nursery rhyme that the Spanish aupair was singing has been haunting me all morning.

The dafoe binoche thing deserved tears of blood too but the second segment was the one with the muslim girl, with the hijab and all. It felt like a civic education class, or a tolerance-promoting ad on TV. Laughable and guh.
There are some good segments in a sea of shit. I liked Assayas' and Podalydès', Van Sant's and Salles' were alright. The rest ranged mostly from useless to embarrassing.
I think I'd hate it even more if I was from Paris. It's so cutesy and touristy and disgusting, I hate it with all my heart.

haha you took this film completly the wrong way i think. i don't think it's trying to be educational or deep or anything..basically it's just a romantic view on paris everyone wants to belive in or something. muslim chick was hot too : )

i suppose you could see it like that as well ofcourse, but i took it differently. it wasn't really some moralistic speech or something, more like a couple of words about it..but yes, it's probably different from a french perspective.

id like to know for each one but i don't necessarily want to read a thing that has like a synopsis of each story before i see it.

Haha. Last night I saw the South Park episode about evil Cartman from a parallel universe (which of course was the opposite of the mean Cartman in South Park). Tolstoyed often argues about music being too shallow and not challenging enough, but in this topic he is the defender of simple romantic entertainment. Is this the evil Tolstoyed from a parallel universe? :D

see, you seem to always get wrong ideas about things i say : )
i don't mind simple things one bit if they are meant to be simple. i listen to lots of cheesy pop music, old italian romantic songs and stuff like that and i totally enjoy it. i hate when things get pretentious for no apparent reason..when people see in music something that isn't there..and in the end is all about whether something touches me or not. i suppose i percept film in a bit different way to music too..for example i love soundtrack from this film and you won't find any challenging songs on it..it's just one of those simple things that is made in a way that pleases me, it's all about subjectivity ofcourse : )

Well see that's the problem. I think films like Paris je t'aime (or Amélie, hey) are pretentious. See Paris, a Paris of love and simpler time. They hide their dullness and clichés under a pretense of simplicity and oh-isn't-that-nice.
Believe me, I love simple movies. Those are not simple. They're trying to be. Or they're simple and they pretend they're not. Both.

well, we then disagree on this one as i find both paris and amelie just simple easywatching films not trying to be something else..
"They hide their dullness and clichés under a pretense of simplicity and oh-isn't-that-nice."
i was in Paris 4 or 5 times and i was always charmed..if i lived there or in france i'd probably find it much different, but for people who only visit it every now and then im sure it's a different thing all together.
also, i like pretty things : )

the subways are fucking excellent in paris, like being inside noise music... people messing about with obscure wind instruments and stupid street theatre and trains going shooooooffff and stuff. the london underground is nowt like it, just as grotty but with none of the, like, atmosphere, or something. dunnoes
also i have not seen this film
