How has the PS3 been received in Europe?

seeing all these vg topics in the board i was curious to
know...

i'm just wondering because no one here in the u.s. is crazy
about paying $600 for a gaming console.

all i know is that i've seen it on sale for 680 euros, which
is $909.

and i'm sure there are plenty of people in the US crazy
enough to pay 600 dollars for a games console.

Buying the cheapest notebook here costs you around $650, so
I don't think PS3 is really that expensive

its a figure of speech. as in, not many people are rushing
to the stores to pay for such an expensive piece of
equipment.

goin back to the subject matter. 909$ is crazy though...

wii and xbox are promoting themselves against ps3. saying
you can buy both for the price of 1 ps3. although the price
is a little high. i'm eagerly waiting to see how mgs 3 is
going to come out. i'm waiting a couple years until the
price goes down.

I bought an xbox 360 and saw how incredibly shit current
generation games and systems are; I don't think I'd be
interested in a ps3 if it was 100$.
a big bloated time wasting bunch of linear, internet fused,
gameplayless, forced cutscene watching, loading time
waiting, terrible controller having, soulless business team
made cookie cutter funless travesties.
It's like all the ones and zeros in the loud overly complex
(in the wrong way) system are organized in an embarassingly
idiotic way and hearing that sytem hum makes me want to
throw it through a window. Pay 600$ to be annoyed.

feeling totally unproductive. I am much happier using
cracked music software and buying alcohol to enhance the

usually, if i want to feel productive i do something
productive ie read a book or ride a bike, and likewise, if i
want to relax and be lazy i end up here. video games are
too involving nowadays, to the point where, like yourselves,
i can't justify spending that much time getting into
a game, or even be able to relax and simply have fun w/o any
extra effort, especially when there are so many things that
i could be investing my energy doing which are more
important to fulfilling and enriching my life and the future
thereof.

yeah, the wii is basically crap. where are the revolutionary
games we were promised? The ps2/3 has them. Being innovative
doesn't mean using the control of your console, it means
doing soething new.

I hope the PS3 rebounds like the PS2 did from its slow
start, but it's not likely. The PS2 only had the gimped
Dreamcast to compete with. Very few must-have exclusives for
the PS3, it's depressing for me as a Sony fanboy. Ubisofts
recent awful ports for the PS3 are yet another ominous sign
for Sony... the 360 is getting superior versions of
multiplatform games, and more exclusives.

I think the PS3 can catch up to and beat out the Wii though,
once the novelty wears off.

mgs, silent hill, final fantasy, do you even realise the
market those three games alone have? Plus, the truly
revolutionary games are indeed ps3 games

Xbox will get Silent Hill, and it's getting Bioshock, Alan
Wake, Mass Effect, a better version of Assasin's Creed, etc.
All of those games have the potential to be as seminal as
any PS3 release. Especially Bioshock, just look at its
pedigree. I was so disappointed when the PS3 version was
cancelled.

MGS is the best series around but it really isn't a system
seller. It's depressing but true. It won't be able to turn
the tide. Final Fantasy... maybe. That's a wild card.

Devil May Cry also recently jumped ship to Xbox. DMC was one
of the PS3's meal tickets, to see that go... that sucks.

I'm with dan & lee on this one: I rarely play games, even
though I have a SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, and GameCube. I have
about 3 games per console I really love, and the rest just
feel like a waste of my time; they make me feel guilty and I
usually end up playing the piano and fiddling about on
FruityLoops to assuage my creativity.

I played Menu Navigigator 4 for the 360. It was all right
but I don't understand why such a game would need modern
hardware. Or maybe the rumors true and there is a secret
hidden 'game' at the end of the maze.

Here is my summary of modern analoge stick gameplay.

*press 'A' (maybe it bypasses a menu, maybe it effortlessy
vanquishes an enemy (which is basically a visual menu given
they offer no challenge)
*Tilt analogue stick until character is in the next event
triggering region. This region is VERY often hidden, but in
a way where you have to hack the game itself to find it.
(For example, remember that forgotten feature of that
forgotten weapon where you have to use a cryptic controller
command you never normally think of (like pushing the
analoge stick IN) to do a spin grab jump?)
*repeat

Essentially I can replicate the gameplay with things I have
on this table, without the visuals. I can move a pen around
to simulate the analogue stick then tap on an eraser
occasionally while staring at a wall. Hell if I want, I can
imagine a better game while I do it. I ought to sell this
system. 'super imaginator 3000'

I doubt the 360 can get a better version of assassins
creed.. the ps3s processing power is awesome. One of the
awesomest features of it (to me) is the folding@home thing
where you lend processing power to cancer research.
Bioshock.. well, that just seems like a run-of-the-mill
shooter. When wlil people realise that innovation isn't just
new AI? MGS has a cult following. The PS in itself has a
cult following.. I don't think Sony will do too bad. I won't
be able to afford a ps3 for quite some time, but I didn't
get a ps2 before far into its existence, and I think sony is
stable enough to keep it going and do what the ps2 did;
they'll keep selling stably enough to keep it going; the ps2
is still selling!!!

I played devil may cry, and I didn't get the hype. Then
again, I'm particularly picky, and the only game I've played
properly since final fantasy X (-2) is STALKER. Stalker has
the freedom I want. I also played Oblivion, but I can't
remember how that related to Final Fantasy. All other games
were just.. crap. MGS is.. it's just the holy grail of
gaming. If those guys haven't put it in, it isn't worth
having it; they know everything, they give everything; MGS
is the perfect game, and every incarnation of it (yes, even
mgs2) shows that.

The problem is, Ubisoft are treating the Xbox as the main
platform. Just look at the recent Splinter Cell games... the
360 version has a stable framerate and many more details,
the PS3 version is awful. Of course the PS3 DOES have more
processing muscle, but that doesn't matter if the developers
are more interested in putting their resources towards the
360. I'm be shocked if Assassin's Creed for PS3 was as good
as the 360.

Some people are even theorizing that the 360 will be the
home platform for Grand Theft Auto... don't be surprised if
the PS3 version is inferior. It's not Sony's fault, or the
hardware's, but if Rockstar feels the 360 is the safer bet
from a business standpoint, it will get the better version.

And I think you're off-base about Bioshock. Have you ever
played System Shock? That's what this game is based on, one
of the most intelligently designed adventure games ever,
it's the same people. Bioshock will be no run-of-the-mill
FPS. It will be more like Deus Ex than Doom.

But I agree about MGS, it's the finest series around. I'd
buy a PS3 for 1000 dollars just to play that.

PS3 isn't heading any innovation superior to what the 360 is
offering. Also, while MGS has a cult following, most of the
games are a load of fucking shite (except from MG2 on the
NES, and I haven't tried anything MGS3, although I've played
the PSP games and they are fucking travesties), and the
stories are totally incoherent and sewn together quilt
blankets of crap. I think both consoles are offering just
about the same stuff, but the 360 has Halo 3 so I like that
the most at the present. If Square ponies up a realtime FF
game or a tactical FF game for the PS3 exclusively, I will
be a bit more inclined to buy it. Or if there's more stuff
from the ICO studio. Or if the new R&C plays as good as it
looks. Or if it drops a few hundred bucks.

I've read somewhere, I belive it was an interview with

till somebody manages to use its processing power.
Actually he didn't put it this way, he said that PS3 is a
piece of crap.

You're... you're not talking about Snake's Revenge, are you?
Metal Gear 2 was ahead of its time but it was not for the

what... I dunno, Staying Alive was to Saturday Night Fever,
or something.

When I poop I like to do it reaaal slow usually making
moaning sounds and sucking my finger.

I think about all the beefarino and mcdonalds hamburgers I
ate, knowing I am pooping out the souls of REAL beings. Then
i look in the toilet and am just entirely proud of myself. I
think of nature's hideous designs of cow's and pigs and
beefarino trees, and know that *I* was the one who converted
these beings into the BEAUTIFUL form I see in the toilet.
And I smile and take a big healthy lungfull through my nose
of these fragrant newly reincarnated beings knowing that *I*
had made a difference.

Modern consoles need some decent games!

I played on my mates 360 the other day, and the only decent
game was lego starwars, a kids game. The graphics on some of
the other games was very very good.

We played call of duty 4way multiplayer and this was great
fun, BUT only because you get to sit around, drink beer and
shoot your friends in the back when they least expect it. I
could do this on goldeneye on the N64 anyway!

The biggest problem is that to encourage you to buy this
expensive hardware, they have to make everything 3D, so you
can see how much better the graphics and processing is.

The problem is the best games I've ever played are allmost
all 2D.

If I were Sony, I'd bundle a disk with a load of revamped 2D
games. You could have things like pacman, tempest, head over
heels, gta 1, sonic3+knuckles, worms 1, Z, lemmings, tyrain,
etc etc.
This would sell the ps3 like the hottest cakes imaginable.

I agree, but not necessarily on the graphics thing as such.
I think the reason why older games with poorer graphics were
better than the new games is that when the graphics weren't
as good, and didn't need to be all that good, they didn't
have to spend lots of time developing the graphics, the
graphics engine and whatever. They could spend their time
developing the game concept, the story, etc, and you see
that the games that really stand out as good games today are
games where these things have been properly developed. A
good story mostly outweighs all other things, but the
problem is that even though I think so, it can indeed put me
off a bit if the graphics aren't developed well enough (I
can't stand cel shading, for instance).

I also think HDR lighting is one of the biggest mistakes in
graphics development. It makes everything look like the
gilmore girls.

That wouldn't sell any systems. There's lots of cheap retro
compilations for the Xbox/GC/PS2, none of which made any
sort of signifigant splash. And those games are still being
distributed and sold, but they're relegated to Xbox Live
Arcade, the PS Online, and the Virtual Console, and even
then, most people feel they're being overpriced for archaic,
comparitively shallow gameplay experiences. Nostalgia is
nice, and it's fun to drop 5 bucks here and there and replay
a classic, but it's a niche thing and most of these games
really don't hold up from a gameplay or design perspective.

The porn industry is going with HD-DVD, so I'm kinda worried
about this competing disc system in the PS3. The fact that
the name starts with a B is no good sign either, looking
back at earlier format wars.

Like most 2D games, but I think that's OK, it's nice to have
a pick-up-and-play game once in a while, something you don't
have to invest too much time into. The game won't be more
than a few hours long anyway.

Also, apparently it has user-created content, people design
their own levels and put them up on PS Online. Neat idea if
done right.

Yeah, if done right, but you'll inevitably have a large mass
of morons playing the game making useless levels so that the
only actually satisfying alternative is making your own
levels anyway. I actually don't have any pick-up-and-play
games.. they just aren't satisfying.
