Ever driven a delorean?

If so, you lucky fucker! I've been going over
delorean.com and it seems one can order parts and assemble
one yourself. Or even better, get a complete one from ebay
for a little over $10000. Man, they look so sweet. I'm going
to make this my new life mission: Get a Delorean and live
your dream!

Better make sure the body is real stainless steel, and not
some rust bucket after-market kit car.

the parts of your brain that are responsible for aesthetic
perception are FUCKED.

the delorean is a nice looking car, but the door mechanism
seems to be crap, same as the A/C and the engine.

Ah, the Beaulieu one must be a bog-standard DMC Delorean.
Doing the gumball rally in the original is obscene!

Flyagaric: On the subject of building one yourself.

1. It's possible.
2. It'll be very, very time consuming.
3. It'll cost far more than you imagine.

If you want to build a car "from parts" it's easiest to buy
a write-off or two and combine the parts of them, then buy
the bits remaining bits you need (then either keep the
leftovers as spares, or if space is a problem, sell them).
Buying each part seperately is the most expensive way to do
it.

Given the rarity of the car, there won't be Haynes or Clymer
manuals, so you'll need a proper workshop manual. Given the
cult status of it, I imagine you will be able to DL a copy
somewhere online. In spite of how rare the car is/how many
parts on it are specific to the car, parts aren't supposed
to be too hard to source.

My advice would be to do a mechanical work nightclass. Then
build a working car of something a lot more common or easy
(one of my mates did an old style mini as his first one)
first. Not only will you improve your skills/confidence on
it, you'll also make all your mistakes (and you will make
them at first) cheaply.

If you're remotely considering doing it for cash (IE
planning to sell it for profit at the end), you'll be very
disappointed. Even if you break even once you factor in all
the tools/training/parts you've needed to buy, you still
won't be paid for all the time on it. A mate recently had to
sell a car he had built (needed the money) and described it
as "heartbreaking". As well as it going for about £250 less
than he put into it, he realised he had given up numerous
weekends/evenings over the 3 years he did it and didn't get
any "pay" for all that.

All that aside, if you really want to do it, go for it. I'm
renovating my garage at the moment with a view to building a
bike I want over the next 2-3 years.

deloreans are not meant to be very good. very unreliable,
slow, handle badly and fall apart.

they were potentially good, but they ended up putting a
really shit engine in it, and shit brakes and shit electrics
coz Mr Delorean was a fucking con man and ended up getting
arrested for drug trafficking

The stock ones aren't too quick, but there's a legit engine
variant that is close to 200bhp (which you can still buy!)
and well maintained ones regularly go way over 100,000 miles
(not that impressive these days, but 25 years ago, it was).
They do need to be looked after though. Apparently a big
problem with the engines that fail is people not changing
the coolant often enough and (big no-no in an aluminium
engine) not changing the oil regularly enough.

I've not heard anything about the brakes/handling on it, so
can't comment on that.

Gull wing doors mean if you park next to anything like
another car you can't open the door. What a fantastic design
idea.

what you do is fix up the car then get the lambo pivot doors
but keep the same frame and you'd be set. then of course
paint the Doc's face on the front with the caption "NEEDS
MORE JIGGAWATTS!"

well finally a topic I can add to in a constructive way like
doggy_b in the B12 thread, I know a LOT about delorians! I'm
obsessed with them. John Z Delorean's life story is an epic
tale of triumph and tragedy.

The cars themselves for me represent the zenith of car
design. Early 1980's car design is amazing, from the '84
countach to the '85 supra and even the normal family cars
from that time are oh so sweet. It will never get better
than that. The world was obsessed with robots in a
transformers kinda way and it shows through the design.
brilliant.

Read the life and times of J Z Delorean, he was involved in
a major US drug bust and was entrapped by the FBI,
essentially ruining the company.

8000 built, 2000 remaining.

I  Delorians

DeLorean's have a fiberglass body tub to which the
stainless steel panels are bolted and a mild steel chassis
which has an resin coating to protect against rust. They
are powered by a Peugeot/Renault/Volvo 2.85ltr V6 engine
that produces 130bhp with either a three-speed automatic or
a five-speed manual transmission. Grey and black leather
trim was the only interior options offered on the regular
production cars. In 1983 the problems finally became too
much and the factory closed down.. After the closure of the
factory in Dunmurray, near Belfast, the remaining parts and
partially completed cars were sold at auction for whatever
they would fetch.

I test drove one, got around the corner from the dealership
and it broke down. It was a nice experience for about 300m!

I wouldn't build your own car they tend to be death traps
because people who buy kit cars don't really know what they
are doing half the time.
