What's XLT's take? I live under a rock so I just became aware of this recently via a commerical. I don't generally like the modern fantahistorical epics like Gladiator and Troy, but it's hard to ignore the visual style here, CGI that actually looks like it could be immersive.
But this is only based on the very little footage I've seen via the ads, I don't really know anything about the movie, though its getting fellated on IMDB. Hit or shit? Either way I'll have to demonoid the graphic novel.

the graphic novel was nowhere near long enough to stretch out into a full movie so i assume theyve added a lot of stuff which will make or break it i think. visually it looks stunning, very close to the graphic novel and very homoerotic which is always a good thing in an action film. ive got my fingers crossed.

its based on a frank miller graphic novel, the director wanted it to be more about the frank miller novel than about actual history
ps i am going to see it as soon as i can as i like the look of it

the videos they released on the xbox live marketplace recently made me want to see it anymore, for no other reason than that it looks insanely awesome in full motion HD
the story will probably be crap though, just set-up for awesome action. but that's ok w/me

Yes, this looks like the movie HD was made for. It will be a treat in 1080p.
It's strange that this movie and God of War 2 are arriving at pretty much exactly the same time. It's going to be violent mythical fantasy overload.

now of all times, i mean fuck i don't imagine there is that much to it, but of all the times to make a movie about defeating evil persians and making democracy... that is one lousy fucking coincidence (or not) if you ask me.

just got back from seeing this and it was fucking epic as hell. for all those worried that it would suck because it dealt with more material than the graphic novel you dont have to be worried. It's easily going to be one of the greatest films of 2007.

Its the name of the film for one, and the significance of the number is they send 300 elite trained spartans to fight the war.

I liked it but I didnt think it was "amazing." Some elements of the story went nowhere, and in my opinion the movie failed to go "All Out" with the action. It never really escalated into one difinitive battle... The ending was rather weak.
Buuuut the individual action scenes were pretty bad ass, and the cinematography was amazing to look at. Costumes were seriously tight as well.
Strong action movie, but lacking in the "epic" quality I was expecting. 4/5

just saw it in imax yesterday afternoon. i usually hate movies with all the hype 300 has been puttin out. but going in expecting shit was probably the best way to win me over and indeed it did just that. for starters, it's just a fucking movie. but on that note it's a HIGHLY entertaining movie. which is ultimately all a movie is, entertainment. i dunno what else to say other than i enjoyed the experience immensely. i was very into it. defintatley worth a go.

i'm getting at the people who are offended by movies and the fact that movies are not real life.
should i be offended if a movie about some myth that supposedly happened thousands of years ago projects the ideology that middle class suburban college students are a buncha wankers, even if we are?

well, only you can decide if you "should be offended" by something someone else made. but do you think works of fiction are beyond criticism?
in general, it seems to me that misogynist, homophobic and racist artists make misogynist, homophobic and racist art.
on the other hand, if what you're saying is that you don't think film-making is much of an artistic pursuit, i'm really inclined to agree with you, save for some few-and-far-between exceptions. but lots of people on this board wouldn't, and so that's why you see people looking at it analytically, which is fine by me.

all the retroactively infused jibber jabber about reason and democracy is offensive. if it's about fictitious bloodlust, let it be about fictitious bloodlust and don't try to sneak that fucking tripe past your audience.
the fact that at now of all times, when what the world really needs is some semblance of exposure to Persian culture, that this is, in all likeliness, what we are going to get is fucking offensive to me as a human being. and i acknowledge that that is in context and might not have anything to do with the intentions of the filmmakers or the movie in anyway.
if it's not about anything, then why superimpose a historical backstory onto it? don't be daft.
obviously i don't think the film is inherently harmful, nor do i think it will have an adverse effect on anyone who sees it, but to deny that films have any sort of weight in real life seems pretty ludicrous when one considers the fact that they all too often come to us in precisely the same form that "real things" like the news come to us in.
and at times they represent the sole view afforded to people of certain cultures and times.
sure they don't matter... just like your dreams don't matter. it all happens in a darkened room and you deposit all the thoughts and feelings you had at the door. nothing sticks.
no doubt the anxiety felt by Iranians is in part due to a general will to antagonize and feel inagonized by American culture, but to label it as utterly irrational... are you quite sure? i'm not.
