artists - who (still) make good music?

Who do you think is making "good" music now or within the
last year or so?

Who makes you listen up and respect what they outputting?

I know its a bit of an open question and I know we can all
hark back to golden eras in certain artist's back catalogues
- but I'm interested in who people think are still
current.....

I've always got time for new stuff by most of the early 90s
pioneers, but most of the also-rans that came after can go
fuck themselves, generally.

Gerald Donald mainly. It seems everything this man touches
turns to gold.

Tuxedomoon were my favorite group of the 80s and still put
out brilliant stuff.

Music is always advancing though, the idea that music is
past its prime or something is of course bullshit. If it was
the other way around, that wouldn't look too good on the
pioneers' resume, that they could only inspire and influence
crap.

If we're talking ''newer'' guys, Aidan Baker is incredibly
productive and really awesome. Someday many nerds are going
to spend a lot of time digging through his discography.

If it was the other way around, that wouldn't look too

and influence
crap.
Well that's what happens when people come along
and attempt to ape and emulate a pioneer's style, or in the
case of RDJ, ONE OF HIS ALBUMS, rather than by inspired and
influnced by them in a broader sense of creating something
unique themselves. I don't think music gets "better" or
"worse", same as animation or television doesn't get better
or worse, just the increase in volume of the stuff makes it
appear so. The original topic posited was which artist(s)
still make good music, citing someone who's only been
around a couple of years doesn't really mean much.

I've spoken to people far more knowledgable about music and
less excitable than you pinheads and fanboys, but keep
lapping up whatever shit's stuck in your ears if you enjoy
it.

Yeah I agree, when someone apes something, it's not
inspiring. But thankfully there are plenty of artists out
there that go far beyond aping. I can't really speak for
''IDM'' anymore because I hardly listen to any of it
nowadays.

I don't think music gets ''better'' either, a
disproportionate amount of my favorite music tends to be
from the 1960s or the... 1760s, but it most certainly
advances as a whole, things are added and sounds that were
touched on are fleshed out. Techniques are refined,
pallettes are expanded, ideas are built upon, whatever. It's
always been this way. It's pretty clear when listening to
good new music that it differs from the music that inspired
it, but I guess it's pointless to tell this to someone that
doesn't want to hear it anyway.

I've spoken to people far more knowledgable about music
and
less excitable than you pinheads and fanboys, but keep
lapping up whatever shit's stuck in your ears if you enjoy
it.

Ha ha what? I was with you up until this. I've talked to and
taken advice from people more knowledgable and with tastes
more refined and varied than yours and they disagree with
you, oooh vicarious e-penis. It means nothing.

Not many people still make good music, in the sense that
they used to and still do. Most of the people I like at the
moment are comparative newcomers.

Kromestar
Pinch
Burial

Yes, I like dubstep... Vastly more than any IDM I've heard
in the past couple of years.

If you're talking about old artists that still make good
music, I don't know. Most of the good music I've listened to
lately was either old music or new artists.

Broadcast has consistently delivered quality stuff, though.
Mogwai's Mr. Beast was also brilliant. Yo La Tengo haven't
disappointed me either.

Sorry, that last bit wasn't really directed at you,
especially as you know far more about music than I'd even
care to, it was just a wanton, flamer of an afterthought.

I do, strangely, value the opinion higher of someone who is
either a musician for a living, or does have an above
average interest, taste, knowledge etc in music, than
say... oh, I don't know, the_funkmaster. Call me crazy, I'm
sure his funny little ideas are as "valid" as anyone else's,
I'm just not sure I'd be bothered to waste my time hearing
them.

Heh, good for you. I never really cared what anyone here
thought about my music taste, because contrary to popular
belief, music taste isn't really a popularity contest. So,
whatever man, you're still a loser in my books.

And since you really know nothing about my knowledge of
music, because I don't really post much here, and about
music even less, that must mean that you're little jab there
about my "little ideas" are based on nothing more then
spite, and having to respond with my insult with one of your
own. How mature and elementary school of you. At least my
calling you a loser has some basis in fact, i.e. that you
act like an asshole half the time on this message board.

I dunno, when someone makes an idiotic comment like:

"I've spoken to people far more knowledgable about music and
less excitable than you pinheads and fanboys, but keep
lapping up whatever shit's stuck in your ears if you enjoy
it."

I feel like responding... like what is he saying, whatever
we're listening to we enjoy because we're ignorant? How
arrogant.
