I thought I saw that some people on here "liked" Daft Punk.
Thought you might find this video informative.

sorry if it's a repost.

Does this mean I'm not allowed to like them anymore?

It isn't anything new. People with a bit of music knowledge
have known this from the very beginning. Dre is exactly the
same. Vibert too.

Daft Punk do sample excessively, but they make the music
their own. The breakdown on "digital love" is still amazing
and the song structure develops independently of any
well-known samples they use.

wow, inspector dipshit obviously read the sleeve notes on
discovery, which lists the sources of the samples on the
record.

makes the album even better.

crystal method is lol music.

as for the rest, yeah, it's all a bit much. sampling's all
well and good, as long as you do something interesting with
the sample, imo..

Daft punk is great. Some people don't seem to understand
there is a more subtle art to enjoying daft punk, and would
prefer musicians that shove their 'artistic' image down your
throat.

offline jackeroffer from Aruba on 2007-02-25 13:55 [#02055162]

you call dressing in robot costumes and outright sampling
entire songs including their choruses subtle? i just dont
like having logs of shit jammed down my throat to be honest

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2007-02-25 13:55 [#02055163]

Oh yeah. Crystal method is crap. It can be lumped
into all that other (groove armada/moby/fatboy slim) frat
boy techno.

No, its over the top. I said their is a subtle art to

There's nothing wrong with sampling if it's used to make the
track unique.
Samples are great.

Crystal Method better than Daft Punk? Don't make me fucking
laugh. Crystal Method are the epitome of music made without
thought.

ya, just look what happened to their last stinking pile. but
i didn't hear anything good about daft's either. discovery
is probably the best thing daft has done. but crystal
method!? there are much better electronic acts that came out
of the mid to late 90s.

omg, someone stop the presses! an electronic music act has
sampled someone else!! alert the authorities.

oh yeah, and comparing daft punk to crystal method makes me
laugh.

next someone is going to be posting all upset like that he
found out amon tobin uses only samples to play with. get a
life.

it is an interesting vid though, i'll keep an eye out for
some of those artists. but ya, i think his problem is more
that those samples form the basic melody and drive behind
most of those daft tracks.

my hatred for daft punk has absolutely nothing to with the
fact that they release other people's songs with autotuned +
some 909 thrown in. Although that alone is pretty pathetic,
it doesnt warrant me hating them in and of itself. I listen
to plenty of plunderphonics stuff and enjoy it greatly. I
just cannot stand daft punk, they are one of the worst acts
to come out of the whole electronica era and i am
dumbfounded, shocked and traumatized that somehow they are
still making music and getting paid. To point out a single
facet of why i think they are so shit is extremely
difficult, because almost every facet of their music is
horrendous.

remotely respectable. I can understand if youa re a gay man

To be honest, I found that video pretty shocking. I mean,
I'm not against sampling, but COME ONE....I was shocked by
how little they actually did themselves to those original
samples. I've looked into other songs they've done with
samples it seems they did very little with the original
samples at all. Fucking lazy, lazy music.

offline B123 from The wicked underbelly (Australia) on 2007-02-25 17:18 [#02055256]

Well they are great producers, if anything.. The Daft Punk
versions were WAY cleaner.. Good job boys.

Homework is a fucking great album btw.

So they cleaned the samples up, added a few elements to make
the material a bit more dancey, and threw in some other
samples and looped the material a bit....I mean I can't deny
their music is fun to listen to sometimes, but it's still
dissappointing. How far do you take this while still calling
the material your own? If all you've done in a track is
changed the speed of a sample of someone else's music and
added a new drum loop, can you really call it your music?

i think this video minimalizes how much they actually do to
the samples. for example, in harder better faster stronger,
they do far more than just loop that sample over and over,
cutting it up, and of course throwing the best
vocoder-guitar solo ever concieved over it.

also, this whole complaining about auto-tuned vocals, cmon,
its only one of their albums which uses it, and only maybe a
fourth of the songs on it have them, and it fits perfect
with the space disco vibe of the whole thing.

listen to homework, then try complaining how they only use
samples to move their music.

The thing about daft punk is its everything about house
music taken apart and reassembled in a logical fashion.
Electronic music has always taken part of its herritage from
sampled music, and daft punk is no different. It used to be
all done with mute groups with a little 909 thrown over
top, and this is a throwback to that.

However, their last album was crap.
