Do you think he's a bit overrated? I mean, I like some of
his routines, but he seemed to get so worked up and
over-emotional about all the unjustice in the world (fair
enough, obvs) that sometimes it's embarassing to watch. I
prefer stand ups like Eddie Murphy that are all about just
straight-ahead killer jokes. Audiences only like being
preached to if they agree with what's being said, so there
doesn't seem like much point to it. He wasn't shit by any
means, but he has been canonised since his death.

Sam Kinison was just rubbish, though.

Yes. Funny guy, but undeserving of the "God of comedy"
status some bestow upon him.

someone becoming inordinately popular after their tragic
death?! surely not, where do you come up with this bibble?

He died before the iPod generation raped everything to
shreds, when it was still OK to be passionate about things.

Wow, that typo was retarded, even by my standards.

I enjoy his stuff. Annoyingly though most of his live CDs
are the same material. I don't know if this was just him or
the dearth of recordings.

He was much better to listen to when he was arguing with the
audience.

No, Bill Hicks isn't overrated and anyone claiming otherwise
can fuck right off.

You must put into context his background. He was deeply
spirtual, and as marlow said, this was from before even
waking up in the morning had become a tired cliche' to our
cynical generation of media on demand devos. His energy was
in his message, comedy was just the medium.

He was the most insightful, talented and misunderstood
comedian ever in my opinion. don't be put off by his (now)
cult status. remember when he dies he was still relatively
unpopular and only just starting to find success. he was
always honest to himself and others, more than you can say
for todays "so whats the deal with airline food" comedians
of today.

bill hicks was bigger than comedy.

even more over rated is this douche...

Larry The Cable Guy

It's amazing that he's made his popularity out of talking
like a hick and acting retarded. People eat it up...

Bill Hicks must have done something right because he was
unknown in his home country. He upset the wrong people in
America. Its pretty well known and scary to know that they
silenced him so well. It also speaks volumes about the true
free speech offered in the UK.

Hicks was a great comedian/philosopher with great delivery.
I can't really rate comedians as "best", since it depends on
what mood I'm in. He surely had his own style, though, but
I'm sure the drug references attracts a ton of stupid
potheads championing him for all the wrong reasons.

I've never been a a big fan of stand up comedy, but Bill
Hicks is the best one I've heard. I certainly do not agree
with all his opinions, but he expressed them all with
passion. He didn't simply 'do a routine' imo. That's why I
respect him, I think.

interpret anything towards their mindfield anyway

i respect him a lot and he's one of my top-3 stand-up
comedians (at the moment I can only think of Carlin who's in
the same league)... In my opinion his best two (video)
performances are Sane Man and Revelations.

For a bit of insight into his life, check out his best
friend Kevin Booth's biography of Bill Hacks called "Agent
of Evolution", released not many years ago.

"Hacks," if only ;)

for a real hack, you might check out a Dane Cook or a Denis
Leary.

i would hereby like to take back my initial comment in this
thread and apologize for those harsh words.

that said, i don't think he is overrated. I wish more people
would listen to what he has to say because i think most of
it really matters.

Doug Stanhope? I always thought I hated that guy, but then
again, I was only familiar with that terrible Comedy Central
show and infomercials. He was The Man's Comedian, if you
will. Then I saw a few of his stand-up performances and was
surprised. Not sure if he's on Bill Hicks' level, I'm not
too familiar with either.

The 'suck your own cock', routine still makes me laugh,
regardless of how many times I hear it.

With very few exceptions comedy is of the time and is
reflective of the mood of the moment. I think this is why
most kids now wont 'get' Bill Hicks, he was from a very
different time. The world has moved on. He has been ripped
off and improved upon as is the way with comedy.

of his material is entrenched in his time period.
