Yeah but I didn't find a topic called "INLAND EMPIRE". The
one I found was about the trailer, not the movie.

im going to see it at some point today. (its all rainy and
drizzly, perfect movie going day)

stupidly though, i decided to get drunk and smoke all of my
weed. david lynch is so much better stoned, it makes you
forget to try and follow the plot and just enjoy it.

I lived in the inland empire for awhile, now I live right
outside of it, It has a cool name but really thats where the
coolness stops. its pretty fucking boring. What would make
it great is if it slowly starting attacking the surrounding
citys and added to its empire (who ever actually owns it)

holy shit was that awesome.

deffinately the pinnacle of modern lynch style (lost
highway/mulholland, i still rate twin peaks above
everything) even though it dragged on a bit in the middle.
you come out wishing it hadnt been three hours long, but of
course it wouldnt have come close to the same impact if it
hadnt been.

also, by far the best sound design of any lynch film ever.

its amazing how far up his own ass david lynch can crawl and
still be awesome. the most riveting display of self
absorbtion ive ever seen.

there were a lot of philosophical questions raised in this
movies don't u think so?

eg. men/man/a man ; goal in life (of course) ; time:
continous or not? ; death/atheism...

after having browsed through his new book (i couldnt
actually read it all) ive lost all faith in david lynch's
philosophical leaning.

he still makes spectacular films tho. great entertainment.

i think this realization is akin to deciding that autchre
arent some alien music geniuses and instead just b-boys with
a lot of weed and a good deal of creativity.

irony? in that book? absolutely not.

david lynch takes himself waaaaaay too seriously. nab the
audio book of 'catching the big fish' off somewhere (read:
demonoid has it, prolly means oink does too) and see if you
can detect that slight hint of pretention in his voice <
/sarcasm>(yes, he reads his own audio book. dunno if he did
the sound design tho :P)

I don't like their movies usually. The Big Lebowski was OK
but the other ones I know (O'Brothers and Ladykiller) are
terrible.

shit if those three movies are your impression of coen
brothers i highly recommend checking out

Millers Crossing
Barton Fink
Blood Simple
Raising Arizona
and of course Fargo

Inland empire was pretty good, but i honestly thought the
length hurt it more than helped it. I wish they shaved about
40 minutes or so off of the drawn out ambiently walking
around scenes.
I thought the DV worked great with the movie. All the over
saturated lights gave it a very gritty feel. It makes me
irritated when reviewers try to explain the movie's plot as
if its even remotely linear. A lot of the reviews i read
were like "Laura dern plays 3 different versions of herself,
the evil one, the prostitute, the actor". I honestly dont
think it was that clear cut, as far as i could tell there
was very little linear or explainable story elements past
the 30 minute mark. It seemed to be left very ambiguous and
open to interpretation. Did anyone else get the impression
that it was kind of like a retooling or expansion on the
concept in Muholland drive?

Thats the thing about david lynch. Its all atmosphere. Any
attempt at trying to explain it or even discuss it for that
matter will make most parties look like idiots.

The Total Film mini review of this was funny as hell. Sounds
bonkers, even if he's been making the same film since Lost
Highway (not counting Straight Story)

I saw this last night, it was about an hour too long and the
DV cameras make everything look shit. There were some
interesting scenes, but it's nowhere near as good as
Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway. I won't describe the plot,
because there wasn't even an attempt at one after the first
half an hour, it was as if he'd filmed about 8 different
movies and randomly stuck scenes from them together.

INLAND EMPIRE is not a movie and I think it is wrong to
compare it to Lost Highway or Mulholland Drive. It is more
like an installation. I would love to see this projected
simultanously on 15-20 large screens in a huge space of some
factory :)

Please write a in-depth, detailed analysis of exactly what
David Lynch's intentions were in making this film. I'm not
goona sit here like a muppet and come out with stuff like
"This scene is a deconstruction of the super-ego..." etc,
etc...

offline dariusgriffin from cool on 2007-03-11 07:00 [#02060815]

First, Lynch is not an intellectual and works only with
emotions, or at least that's what he claims. Still, I think
INLAND EMPIRE's narrative is very interesting. Laura Dern's
character seems to be on several levels of fiction and at
several points in time at the same time (her death scene is
a good example, with the camera panning out, revealing a
studio set). I don't care about theories like "oh she's a
prostitute dreaming she's an actress dreaming she's a
prostitute", I think it should be taken as purely a game
with the narrative.
And the DV-look is absolutely fantastic, he makes the best
out of it. It's great and ugly and dirty. Some scenes,
combined with the deadpan delivery and sloppy editing, look
like they're straight out of some terrible horror movie or
porno. So of course it looks ridiculous, but ridiculous is
always more alien and unsettling. And funny too.
Another great scene is when she shoots that guy near the
end, and the picture is so overexposed he can just overlay
another distorted bleeding face. It's wonderful, ridiculous
and scary.
Somehow, yes, I think in some ways it's a gratuitous film,
but this is a good thing. Life is gratuitous too, fuck
having a point.

Lynch is a great absurdist and has made some awesome movies.
In my opinion, his movies aren't particularly deep from the
outset, but that's what I like about them.

like in the US?

Distributed normally, it's still in 46 cinemas at the
moment. We were planning with friends on maybe going to that
exibition in Paris but I guess we won't.

I just saw it at the Odeon in London. I liked the actual
film a lot, although it dragged in places, but I couldn't
quite get past the DV look. It's fine on close-ups and in
scenes with odd filters, but for general shots I found it a
bit blurry and cheap looking. That might just be me,
though.

I really liked how the film played with the idea of films
within films and worlds within worlds.

Guy Maddin has been called the Canadian Lynch. This isn't
true but I want to see some of his feature films in full
anyway. Here's some short films:

The Eye Like a Strange Ballon
The Heart of the World
Hospital Fragment
A Trip To The Orphanage
Sissy Boy Slap Party
