I prefer a lot of people over Dicky, I liked it better "back in the day" when he was the weirder end of a wider techno spectrum of artists, now he's just deified on his own it's pretty boring. It's not his fault. Entirely.

Didn't xenakis just make a bunch of ugly machine noises and completely disharmonious piano pieces? Heh I know he deserves some credit because he was doing some really out there stuff a long time before most people, but the "originality" factor only goes so far for me. Shitting in a rabbit's mouth is original but it's still shit in a rabbit's mouth. Then again maybe you like him for entirely different reasons. I guess the point is, why do you like that guy, flappy? And what would you recommend by him?

Oh, and no, I can't think of any artists better than Aphex. Which is not to say I think he's anywhere close to perfect. He's obviously self indulgent from time to time, and some of his music is unbridled shit. But I can't think of an artist who has more A+ material.

i'm not sure that Xenakis is the aural equivalent of having someone shit in a rabbit's mouth (would that technically be a Hot Carl?)
if you're looking for Xenakis recs, Legende d'Eer is definitely the first thing that comes to mind. and yes it is discordant, but it's also very very exacting. sort of similar to aphex in that regard maybe. i think i answered this poll and i'm sure i put 3, but i couldn't really say offhand who i think is better than aphex... a lot of people in their way? his way is really just one among many. in terms of volume (number of releases that i like a lot), he probably outstrips a lot of artists in my mind, but his high points are necessarily higher than those of Christoph Heemann, for example... Eliane Radigue maybe? Xenakis is a good answer... at this point it would be disingenuous for me to not mention Gunter Muller, and Keith Rowe, both of whom have blown my mind many times in many different combinations... Zoviet France? Martin Rev within and beyond Suicide perhaps. David Daniell. Joe Colley. Jan Jelinek. Jason Lescalleet. Brian Eno (tough call... a lot of his pure electronic work is not so mindbogglingly amazing). certainly Aphex doesn't have a monopoly on the dance floor either, but it's more difficult to pick out people who are relatively consistent and have longevity...

for me there is no "best electronic musician of all time", and that's for the better. i have several favourites, including aphex twin, orbital, bola, the chemical brothers, bernhard günter, coil, underworld, matmos, etc... and while it's true that aphex twin has made great albums, possibly in a wider variety of genres than any other electronic musician i know, i don't feel that any of them is "above" the others. maybe one is for the "technical aspects" of their music but i don't know anything about that. maybe aphex twin (since we're talking about him) would be if i had discovered him at another time, maybe i know his music too much by now, having listened to it too much some years ago and not enough lately. but the way i feel now is that there are so many different genres of electronic music that cannot really be compared, and with that and my tastes changing all the time and me still discovering other artists, having to elect just one artist as the best one would be stupid.
"It's kind of like a crazy contest between an orange and a spaceship and a potted plant and a spoon which one do you like better?”

You seem to have a problem with Xenakis' music because it is atonal and discordant, as you put it 'ugly' and 'disharmonious'. His music is based on mathematical concepts like probability, group theory, game theory, to name a few. It's not about melody and harmony (although some of his pieces have a subtle beauty to them–listen to Orient-Occident) so much as it is about relationships and patterns in the musical structures.
The question was about electronic musicians in particular. In my opinion, a good composer of electronic music should take advantage of their medium and do things that are not possible with accoustic instruments. Iannis Xenakis succeeds at that quite well, in my opinion, by using electronics to achieve different timbre, for example. In general, I think Xenakis is important because he makes interesting and (arguably) listenable music with very non-standard compositional techniques.
In terms of what I recommend, I would suggest listening to the aforementioned disc Electronic Music, particularly Orient-Occident, Concret PH, and S.709. Also I recommend the disc Xenakis: Music for Strings, particularly the pieces Aroura and Analogique A+B, although it's not entirely electronic.
On a sidenote, I have to agree with DeadEight on Brian Eno. His electronic stuff is impressive...completely blows Selected Ambient Works 2 out of the water. If anyone hasn't noticed, I'm actually not a big Aphex Twin fan. :)

i agree that he's doing a completely different thing, i don't agree that the thing he is doing is better. i would even say that i know how tempting it would be to say that what he is doing is better, because as you describe his fusion of pop with more jarring stuff is insanely satisfying on so many levels... i doubt i listen to Xenakis, for example, even a tenth as many times as i listen to Aphex... but there's something precious in the rare event that is connecting with a prickly figure like Xenakis (among a great many others of course).

i know what you mean..also, how can one say what's better in music..the question is kind of silly..
the thing is to me aphex does what xenakis is doing except it's more pleasant to my ears..and i agree it's very nice to hear xenakis every now and then.

How is Aphex Twin doing what Xenakis is doing? I don't see any significant musical similarities between the two.
