As many of you know and are planning events and initiatives
for the fourth international Internet Safety Day, I thought here you could post what
you're doing in response to recent US findings that "many
teenagers often stumble across pornography online.
"

The EU's Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane
Reding said

"I am calling upon all decision-makers in the private and
in the public sector to help make the internet a safer place
for the most vulnerable of our society,"

which presumably includes Phobiazero. I'm sure he's doing
something in this respect for v2.

But until pr0n filters are installed let's have no naughty
pictures in here, let's make this a safe and secure place
for younger electronic fans to talk about their favourite
Aphex album without suddenly coming across some asian
woman's arse and tits.

I wonder how much they got paid the agency that made the
astonishing discovery that "many teenagers often stumble
across pornography online."
?

I don't think stumble's quite the right word.

Poor children, how can they deal with sex, all alone and
vulnerable? It's dangerous business and we should by all
means shelter them from it.

I'm going to attempt to locate these pornographic web sites
and email their Webmasters to tell them about the day and
hope that they might curtail their content. I'm also being
sponsored by Flora in the Blogathon.

As unlikely as it seems, there are a few instances where
people do it accidentally and from an employment law POV IT
departments are advised to not write this off as the person
who was looking at the porn, lying to get out of trouble.
Naturally, there should be some semblance of a believeable
story. I know forensics people called in to investigate a
senior government official charged with looking at scud on
the taxpayer's time and the natural assumption was that this
guy "accidentally" opening a dodgy page (just as someone
stuck their head round the door, as it happens) was a lie.
Still, because of the potential damage to his character and,
because of his position, it'd be reported in the papers and
the potential for libel, etc. it was decided it was too
expensive to say anything until they were certain he was
guilty.

Turns out he was telling the truth. It was the first and
only site of the kind he had visited and he had been
searching for "Coed"; a rather innocent welsh word meaning
"wood" (as in collection of trees). Instead, he "stumbled"
across American sites referencing "co-ed" students, which
I'm informed sometimes have less than savoury content.

Ha, I wondered what they meant by blogathon, do you have to
read 26 miles worth of Blog text or you get sponsered per
blog that you read before you collapse of an overdose of
"Over on rawbeetroot's blog they're talking about the
recent flame war that erupted on The Daily Crimping which
all stemmed from an article on CSS semantics on Dave
Goodfart's weekly podcast which takes a wry look at emerging
blogs... "

A lad I knew at school's dad got sacked from his job as the
manager of an catalogue depot because he filled an entire 20
gig hard drive with porn then ordered another one from head
office. They couldn't understand why he needed 20 gig for a
few spreadsheets and emails, they went around to
investigate, and found it all. What a muppet.

I used to. But that was when I didn't have a computer at
home, and work was my only exposure to internet porn.
