I'm quite interested by why some tracks sound so
much better loud than they do otherwise. I'm not talking
about tracks that sound a little bit better when they're
louder, I mean ones where you don't like them at all quiet,
but are good loud.

One track I'd include in this is Carl Craig's remix of
Revelee. Played quiet it sound boring and even amateurish in
places. Played loudly, it's hypnotic and really good.

I can think of some music that sounds a lot better turned
right the fuck down. BOOM BOOM.

a lot of fast ae tracks or fast ANY tracks sound completely
different to me when im 1 room over vs being in the same
room

the speed or tempo of the tracks, i can't explain it
some bits sound faster; it's weird

I've noticed that, too. I can listen to classical music,
folk, ambient or most rock bands at any volume and still
enjoy the experience, but stuff that's a bit more on the
edge (like "Bitches Brew", which is playing very loudly at
the moment, or most weird electronic music) ONLY sounds good
if it's being played very, very loud.

Yeah, I've noticed this on a few songs.
I guess it could be due to a large dynamic range, but with
audibly pleasing parts of a low amplitude.
I'll go and do an exhaustive study and annoy all my
neighbours....

More likely it's to do with emotions and memories of songs
or something or other psychological things rather than
psychoacoustics(?)

Heavy stoner rock and doom like Sleep, Electric Wizard,
Cathedral et al. It changes the air pressure in my house and
sometimes makes it hard to breathe. I love the physical
changes that increasing the volume brings on.

"most vex'd tunes, really."

yesterday I was playing degenerate loud on my speakers while
cleaning the house. it's great to hear those basslines
projected through my apartment. I can appreciate their music
quietly on a decent pair of headphones, though.
