I'll listen in about an hour, I am so fucking busy working
for some bloke panicking about his website.... inbetween
chatting on here like a pro.

I like the microtuning.

It wheezes and jingles. It's old fashioned and futuristic,
nostalgic and alien. It makes me think of things turning
into other things. It's sly.

Coolies - I'm busy catching up on my writing for the day
anyways: just had to release that little loop from my system
via the comp.

Excellent, thanks for listening and responding. Glad
you mentioned nostalgia/old-fashioned because it was an
effort to capture the spirit of Alice, and it's quite a
nostalgic & old-fashioned story. :)

weird melody.. real alien folk type stuff. makes me think of
monty python except everyone is a grey alien

Yeah, I was going for a muted feeling to it. I built the
bass melody first, then the descending arpeggios, fleshed it
out with two basses riffing off one another, then concocted
the main melody, added a small sub-melody leading off that
one, then subtly doubled the primary melody!

The simple chord structure is: B minor, B minor, G, D, quite
simple.

Lovely stuff, vague oriental feel I felt, nostalgia, foreign
film, enchanted attic, actually bloody good.

Thanks for the nice words: I'd like to write music for each
main character/chapter of the story, Alice Evergreen.

For a long time I've wanted to make books more
interactive--if this thing gets finished (and I'm working
hard on it each day now) &, Praise Allah, actually
published, it would be great to include a soundtrack for it.
Kind of like Peter & The Wolf I guess, except with
more words.

Yeah, listening to it a couple more times, it's quite
intrusive: I think I'll have it waver in and out & extend
the piece with a secondary theme.... thanks for the
inspiring post!

Well, I don't know what you mean when you say you don't know
what I mean. I was insinuating that you'd been drinking

good one! you could and should make it longer, though.

for some reason I have the feeling that a field recording
done by attaching a microphone to a bike and just riding
around would be good.

Alice (Longer Version)

Expanded to 17 bars - changed the instrumentation of the
"horn-like" instrument, developed the main melody a bit
while retaining the main thrust, before a more ambient
sounding last four bars, leading to the beginning again.

"When we reach that point, whatever happened WILL happen
again"

Do you like the progression? I do, but I was worried in case
it stomped all over the original atmosphere and ruined it

you know usually i hate it when people try to emulate real
instruments (i assume the guitaryness is done on computer)
but this is lovely.

Thank you :) Yeah, it's all 'virtual'... almost all of the
instrumentation comes from the lovely StringStudio VST; the
main high melody, however, is a LegacyCell patch.

I've added a small SAWII homage in there, too, for the
kean-eared :D

you know i played this on a loop for about 5 minutes solid
and it became almost kind of mantric. then i put it through
my kaoss pad and really slowly turned up one of the delays
and nearly did a little wee of pleasure.

That I'd like to hear - post the results! I've been
listening to it on a loop for the past 20 minutes, and can't
turn it off.. though I've noticed that the first note of the
high melody is missing :(

I love it now! This is imaginary fantasy quality ish.
It's hard for me to make stuff like this. There's different
instruments but they all function as one unified thing. I
guess you just kind of freestyle with one instrument at a
time with whatever sounds good here and there, leaving
enough empty space for other instruments to do stuff. I'm
going to try that right now and let's see how shit it turns
out..

I even capitalized everything but the e in zebox which those
gay fagoteers would probably do if they posted such a
message. I just deleted the hell out of the melody I made
for the good of humanity. It sounded like your track run
over by a trash truck carrying a load of moldy maggot
infested tacos, some of which spilled out and fell on the
bla bla bla bla

This is really great. It has a classical feel to it. My only
recommendation is this:

if you were to extend it, please repeat the first eight
seconds or so -- those parts are wonderful. I'd love to hear
them more than once.

it sounds like good supernes music listened through a
gamecube.
i can imagine the ruins in the forest level. i like the last
seconds, when it becomes more silent - in a longer version,
making most of the track this way would valorize the more
soundful beggining, wich you could repeat in the ending.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2007-02-02 06:36 [#02043478]

hmm, good idea stefano! A recurring theme haunting the
piece. Btw,you talk of a ruin among the forests: that is
spooky because in Alice, the main building is a ruin just
beside a forest, Devil's Wood. Excellent.

Indeks - listened to that first thing this morning after
having a haunted dream: I really liked it, sounded pretty
amazing :)

w M w : hey, I should be able to convert it into a MIDI file
(I think), and e-mail it to you, no problem... sometime in
the future, maybe even this weekend.

sirmailbox: thanks very much for listening: At first, it was
the first section looped three times.. when I decided to
expand it, I debated whether to repeat the first section, or
not. For some reason, I decided not to - I can't remember
why, now.

Think I'll work some more on it, before the
Definitive Alice Evergreen!

Alice Evergreen is the title character of a story I'm
currently 13,000 words in to (approximately one-third of the
way).

I'm going to take up your suggestion about developing it
from that ambient section at the end, bringing the main
theme in once in a while a la rondo. :) ta very much.

How did I miss this until now? Anyway it is really really
nice. Your melodic work, whilst generally being too short,
is always excellent. But from the opening pages of what you
sent me the music fits perfectly.
