Is the board less civil than it used to be?

I recently noticed that generally speaking, board members
seem to be more arsey to one another than used to be the
case a few years back. Yes, there has always been a degree
of bickering, but more of it seemed like good natured
ribbing then, than genuinely spiteful attacks as seem
commonplace now. Likewise, there were always a few cruel
posters, but now an acerbic edge to people's post seems the
norm, rather than the exception.

I know a lot of "old posters" who have stopped posting here
have cited the current rather antagonistic nature of the
place as the main reason for leaving. I myself have found
that I've done the same as I do IRL when dealing with
impolite or unpleasent people. That is, become a lot more
blunt and cutting in response.

Is this what happens? People either can't handle it and
leave, or start to give as good as they receive? Am I
looking at it through rose-tinted spectacles and in
actuality, there has always been an unpleasent undertone?

There have been spates of nastiness throughout the board's
history (or at least, in the five years I've been a member).
People have less patience with people whose characters
abrade their own. It's because the membership is ageing.
Plus we live in a world which is less civil and respectful
than it used to be, and it naturally carries on into the
Virtual World of Internet.

There are a select few who are uncivil enough to make it
much less worth visiting than it has been. The board does
go through crap phases, and the current one is one of those.

It could be that those that previously were asses have just
upped their activity and then this makes more stuff look
like it's aggressive.

some real cheap and mean posts at times!
I think this is an important thread! You never know who's
behind a nickname, and it might be someone fragile who might
do something silly as a result of too many attacks. Some
folks really take the internet seriously in a personal way.
gotta be carefuL

You can't pander to people who are so weak that they would
allow an Internet attack affect their actual lives. The
pandering to the L.C.D. is already a problem in general
society.

I think the incivility is less creative and whimsical than
it once was. We need to set a higher standard for rudeness.

It IS less civil than it used to be. I also miss a lot of
the people who used to be here for the music. One thing that
happens over and over, is that when new board-members make
threads that have been discussed before, the answers are
normally 90% rude. If I was a 14 year old boy, making my
first topic about "when will afx release a new album?" and
the only replies was to go fuck myself, I guess I would go
somewhere else to discuss music.

this place used to be only for music discussion

it has no turned itself into a sort of "off-topic" or
"one-shop-stop" forum, which i've noticed happening all
over.

i contribute to that, but have tried to stop.

community has taken form, to an extent.

but im not sure why so many people get so upset here.

over 50% of the current main page threads are basically

That's my attitude. To be honest, I used to close a lot of
those negative sort of threads. I often don't now, unless
they're really bad, becuase they are so commonplace. If 5%
of the board does it, it's trolling and most people are in
favour of it going. If 50% of the board do it, it's part of
the "board culture" and it becomes a bit harder/less popular
to police it.

To change it, we need a lot of users to change their
attitudes. Then once most people are behaving decently, the
few that don't, can be forced to.

Oh no, I mean, MHTRTC, that took one listen back in the day
to evoke a "Holy fuck, music will never be the same"
response, TCH doesn't come close. But for a band evolving,
or at least trying something new, I think it works. It's
like a shiney BOC compared to the gritty, distressed BOC
we're used to.

Sorry, I've derailed this "Is XLT the most hostile
environment in which to attempt to talk about music without
having your face chewed off?" thread into a thread about a
bloody old BOC album.

sarcastic the last while, but there have been so many times
I've posted a message about some music topic and just gotten
some stupid idiotic response. God, you wouldn't act like

but it's still people communicating with people, so what
happened to general decency and politeness?
