ireland is undoubtably amazing, since that is where Redrum

i personally fucking hate the place. everyone is a moody
lazy cunt, and you are guaranteed to get ripped off about 50
times a day. yeah, i fucking hate it. full of violent
intimidating chavs too. i'd rather live in iraq.

it would be more interesting to hear brits who have lived
abroad, if they miss the UK, sorry, England. I miss the
people, as for chavs they're fucking everywhere in Europe,
each country has it's own name for them.

I lived in Lithuania for two years, which was amazing at
first because it was all so new and exciting. It soon became
shit when everday drudgery kicked in.

I also quickly realised that there are good and bad people
everywhere, that nowhere is anywhere close to perfect, and
that England is basically no better or worse than anywhere
else. And, at the end of the day, it's where my friends and
family live, so I had to come back.

And I've been to Ireland. Beautiful place, friendly people.
I'm sure if I lived there I'd quickly think it was shit
though - like anywhere else. But basically it seemed to have
as many bad points as England has - in fact, it seemed
pretty fucking similar. Maybe not to southern England, but
in many ways the people, the scenery, the pace of life
seemed similar to where I come from.

Of course England is a turd. But so is Ireland. And so is
the world.

Well the mainstream sucks I agree (but like most so called
"civilized" countries) But I must admit that when I first
came to the UK and the reason why I'm still here is that it
has a very developed and active alternative scene which
tries to balance things out. This is something that a lot of
other western countries lack actually, and it gives a ray of
hope =)

I've lived in Poland (lovely people), Argentina (lovely
people) and Portugal (ahem...).

I'll always miss things about the UK (if we broaden this out
a bit) as, from birth, I've been steeped in the culture.
Until I learn another language and really integrate in
another country I'll never really be able to be anywhere
near objective.

I'll say this though, the weather here in Portugal is adamn
sight better than in the UK. And sometimes, that's enough.

He was probably saying something more along the lines of,
"If you're very proud of your country (or race, or gender,
etc.), the implication is that other countries are not as
good and hence in some way inferior.

For example, saying "Britain is superb." Suggests that you
must be measuring it on some sort of scale and for it to be
near the top of the scale, almost all other countries must
rank below it. It doesn't neccessarily mean you hate
them though.

Of course, it depends what exactly you like about a country;
saying France's food is great, suggests ours isn't so hot.
Saying, I love Britain because of all the fond memories of
the place (IE something more akin to what Jonesy was saying)
doesn't denigrate any other country. For example, it leaves
open the possibility that had you grown up in Japan, or
Africa, or America, you could have had fond memories from
there.

surprisingly japan is actually pretty pathetic, they just
distract you with all the bright lights and flashy
electronic gadgets. my reason for this is that all the shit
america does that everyone disagrees with, like this war
being about blood for oil, the rest of the world gets the
benefits of with out any of the backlash america gets for
pulling it off. japan and americas economies are
practically entertwined so if one fails so does the other
creating a domino affect through out the rest of the world.
cuz boy we all love our wirless digital braodband
communication and entertainment devices so much, what would
you moan about with out them right? no oil no industry no
economy no society.

jonsey: because the feds cut the intrest rates after nine

wouldn't worry if they should be spending their throw away
income in the face of impending attacks. and the military

My ideal place is a city with cozy streets. Cobble stone
every where. Streets and streets of cozy houses real close
together with cafes on each corner.

I hate to sound smug but you couldn't go far wrong than come
to Portugual. They have these sandy-coloured cobbled stones
called "Calcada" here that are everywhere (in the Metro &
shopping centres even). Spit and you'll hit a family-run
cafe/restaurant too.

The march of globalisation will reach here soon enough
though.

I noticed that I always complained about where I lived and I
always wanted to get out of this city or that city. Its a
trait I don't like about myself and I suspect its mostly in
my head. Like how people say its not where you are its where
your head is basically. I agree with that mostly. A positive
outlook also changes real things in your life too.

right, like in America there are only a few places with the
cobble stone clustered cozyness. Georgetown DC comes to
mind. Probably Greenwich village in NYC, few and far
between. Which is why I would love to hear more people
comment on places like this so I can go and check it out.
Maybe even move to the best place.

I wouldn't say that superb is comparative, not that
saying France's food is great implies an inferiority of
other nations' culinary efforts. But that's just me; words
like superb and great are just standards, not comparatives.

Please be discerning when deciding whether to use
YOUR or YOU'RE.

YOUR = belonging to you

YOU'RE = a contraction of YOU ARE

Your dogged determination to laugh in the face of linguistic
convention is becoming tiresome, say what.

I'm in this fairly poor, remote Hungarian village at the
moment, and despite the fact that I can't speak the language
properly the 20/21 year olds are more than happy to make
friends and hang out. My experience of staying up in an
English village is far less impressive; nobody was
particularly horrible, but a certain cold sarcasm seems to
permeate the English, and there's a certain warmth in other
cultures that I sometimes feel we lack. Still, the living
conditions are good here, and the nice people are very nice,
and like someone else said, it's got a great underground
music scene. I reckon it's a great place to live.

Actually, that's a good point. I take back what I said: It's
only great place to live if you're lucky enough not to live
in the many crime-ridden shitholes. Related to that point is
how the countryside has been tainted here; apart from all
the murders that go on, it's far too controlled and sterile.
Nature should be allowed a little more freedom.
