Some dubstep is really boring.
I will admit.

but its already branching out into many different areas
wich promotes further experimentations of the main dubstep
artists..

I prefer the harder hitting dubstep or "Hardasfuckstep"
Vex'd & Milanese have it going in that area... The beats are
really big and thrashy the bass isnt too far off..

I like that Drop the Lime has been dabbeling with the
genera...
I love his earlier breakcore stuff (Sweet Desire, Surrender
to the Sound etc etc )

I'm waiting for Squarepusher or Aphex to touch it... You
know its coming...

i hope not. with all my heart. can't see either of them do
this shit.

Brisk: It's not bad at all, but I'd describe that as more
traditional UK garage than dubstep.

Babaouo: I think Aphex/Squarepusher's take on the genre
would be interesting, but I'm not sure they'd be able to
leave the track repetative enough. I can see there being a
few good bars here and there, but it degenerating into a DSP
wankfest, or drum programming show-offery in places and
ruining the mood.

Funkmaster: It's Sarf Londoners that do that, mainly.

Well, I doubt RDJ exactly hates the stuff. He put out Grime
2 on Rephlex, which despite the name is actually a dubstep
album.

As Babaouo says, part of whats so exciting about it is that
for such a young sound there are so many sub genres of it
already and a very broad sound palette. I don't know anyone
who likes all the sub genres of it, but there's usually one
you'll like. Some of it is almost like techno, some of it is
almost llike dub, others like "world music", some is similar
to garage, etc. I think the "Kornstep" (joking term) stuff
that uses distorted guitars sounds shit and I haven't found
a single track in this style I like. It'd be a real shame
for someone to hear 2-3 tracks of that and write off the
whole genre though as the may well love the more technoish
tracks.

Big:

Dubstep is "Intelligent Grime" ;-P

To be fair, i'm enjoying it more than I did. But I really
don't think I could spend a full night at FWD or something.
Variety is key and I don't think theres enough radically
different sub-genres in dubstep just yet.

offline Brisk from selling smack at the orphanage on 2007-01-13 05:58 [#02031441]

When 2step or 8-bar first came out, the pikeys on radio said
the same things btw. "Its gonna take over the world" and
whats not, but its still nowhere near commercial-sounding
enough to be anymore than an underground thing. And I spose
thats the way most producers would want to keep it.

Has there been any major crossover successes with dubstep
yet?

overal it's just dull music..i don't think rdj or jenkinson
would be particulary interested in it..i think they'd get
bored quickly. i mean, both of them can sure do simple
stuff, it's the sound that is dull. and im sure they don't
mind dubstep to listen to, but doing it is a different thing
maybe.

Well, if you've listened to a fair bit and still don't like
it, that's fair enough.

I think some people write it off as dull because it's sparse
and (compared to IDM) usually fairly simple, but the same
criticisms could be levelled at ambient. I think if RDJ
could get into a SAW1 sort of mindset and do a very
"safe"/stadard dubstep release it'd be a very good one. I
imagine if he tried to do a genre-pushing one it'd wind up
being like a 2 step drukqs/analord and not really feel like
dubstep.

Still, it's music, there's not much point arguing over taste
;)

dunno, i like ambient/drone music a lot, but can't take much
dubstep. i also don't like what is known as 'complex' idm
around here. if richard is going to do dubstep as we know it
im going to cry.

I completely agree about it "taking over the world". Yes,
it'll (and already has been) used in a few films, it also
has some "crossover" hits. Still, these are relative; the
nature of the crossover is limited. It's things like coffee
table musos having Various Production's album and less
mainstream films using it in the score. It's not "blown up"
(and won't ever, IMO) to the extent that the 9 Samurai video
I posted will be shown regularly on MTV Base, or that
Burial's album will be in the album top ten, etc.

if you think dubstep is boring you could still play it as
excellent background music i think

I don't think Aphex actually would do a "dubstep as we know
it" type release. I imagine he'd want to be seen as a
pioneer, rather than follower. I just think that if he did,
he could do it very well (to my ears, the reverb on some of
the drukqs tracks and the bounce of bass in Bwoon Dub show
he could do it).

I don't really like "complex for the sake of it" IDM either.
Sure, I like unusual sounds and music, but I get the
impression that a lot of what we hear is the self indulgent
"cock-rock guitar solo" playing of electronic instruments.
Far more about technical showing off than making something
that sounds good. It's not even like it's particularly
original or difficult to do these days; anyone can put a
half dozen tempo synched (but at different rates) LFOs
controlling different parameters of sounds.

I agree: I think Scarecrow's "Taken" would make excellent
background fight music for a trashy Jeepers Creepers film.
Similarly the very sparse tracks like Pinch's Qawwali could
be used as radio bedding/car adverts without sounding too
out of place (not saying I'd like to see that happen, mind).

I don't think dubstep would be used in TV ads, simply
because not everyone has the setup to handle those
basslines.

Ever tried listening to dubstep on laptop speakers? Ouch.

Dubstep is a load of old poo. I guess the kids love it cos
with those big bad boy subs it makes their guts shake
around.
It always reminds me of a walking stick remix of something
alright.

I love dub, I love techstep, but dubstep is like a gentic
anomaly.

It always used to make me laugh when my (now defunct) local
vinyl shop had guys in there going "yes mate this is heavy"
to some dubstep.

Maybe I'm getting old...
It's just sooooo boring though, but it's underground so it
well cool, init. This is not going out music. I would be
annoyed if a dancefloor had this playing all night, would be
alright for a half hour tops at the beginning...
Some music is repetative yet still captivates your
attention, dubstep is like a bastard child of copy and paste
at half tempo with no beat or rhythm.

Havent read all the posts yet but will..

I think Aphex & Pusher will make tracks laced with dubstep
here and there. Some Dubstep really isnt that repetative.

Aphex blends in and out of different drum kits breaks and
drum & Bass style beats. This could be done with dubstep as
well. deep down you know it..

sorry for the halfassed response but I am in a rush.
