but beware that i don't have in mind making such stricte
dubstep tracks consisting just of a bassdrum, ass-slaping
snare and some sine bass :P

those two samples above should explain what my definition of
it is.

See, everyone says Dubstep is white people doing grime, but
there are actually loads of black people doing it-definately
a greater proportion than their respective make up of the
population (not that this should affect your view of the
music anyway).

On the subject of segregating minorities, are there
any female dubstep producers at all? All I've seen
are a couple of female grime mcs occassionally collaborating
with dubstep producers.

Although I'd hate to see dubstep go through a wanky "real
instruments" phase like DnB did for a while, I found
this is quite interesting.

Yep! Liking it. I agree I should sort that first track so
it's "finished" bar mastering first before going off onto
that, or else we'll end up with half a dozen unfinished
tracks. Did you get my email about sending a copy of the
first one with the synthline as data rather than a .wav (as
I have the neccessary)? I was just waiting on that before I
start editing it heavily. I'm thinking I might do a minute
or so of slower, more laid back intro, that breaks down into
what we have so far.

Really enjoying the kode9 & spaceape album lately, but was
surprised to find that 9 samurai doesn't have spaceape like
the music viddy did. I know those lyrics are in portal and
addiction but it's not the same. Is there anywhere I can
find the music video edit?

I'm not sure the music video version is available on any
proper release. Personally, I vastly prefer the original
version. Spaceape isn't bad, but this is one track that
works better without him.

I saw the music video you posted earlier, then grabbed the
album. So I guess my opinion on this is just a matter of
being amazed by the first version. Still a great track
without spaceape.

What do you lot reckon of DJ Distance's album - My Demons?

Originally I was rather unimpressed. I didn't think there
were really enough ideas there to warrant a few album (each
track didn't really have enough variation, I'd of liked to
seen it condensed down into an EP of stronger material).

With subsequent listens though, I enjoy it much more. This
is quite unusual with dubstep for me, Burial excepted, I
like most stuff that I end up liking, on the first listen. I
can't really work out why as there's nothing massively
complex in most of the tracks that it took me time to get my
head round. The first disc I stronger IMO, good solid tracks
like My demons, Night Vision and weigh down, I only really
rate Mistral off the second one.

My main criticism would still be that it's too sparse. Now,
I know done right, sparse dubstep (even by dubstep's
standards) can be amazing: Qawwali, Voodoo, etc. This just
sounds like it wants to have more going on in a few places
though. I think some more instances of faster cluttered
hihats in places would work well. I was playing around
mixing it earlier and it worked well with a vocal loop from
a JuJu track, so I might look at that side of things a bit
more too.

I still think I Taipan/Fallen is his strongest work and I
don't think he's deserving of the "Photek of Dubstep" title
that I see bandied about, but I do like the album now.
Anyway, if you listened once and deleted it, it might be
worth a second listen. If you've not heard it, but are
familiar with his previous work, it's nearer cyclops/traffic
than earlier stuff, but still quite a new sound for him.

The Skream album took ages to grow on me (and there's still
shitloads of filler on there which is quite unlistenable in
places), but you simply cannot deny the awesomeness that is
"Stagger". Wicked chooooooon, with the slinkiest basslines
i've heard in some time. I like "Summer Dreams" too, though
I bet that one pisses of the purist dubstep elitests.

Sorry mate, not a lot been happening lately that has piqued
my interest. Repress of Loefah - Disco Rekah and (the
imminent) repress of Loefah -Root are worth getting, if you
don't have them already.

i_x_ten: I dunno, DnB took about 5 times as long to get this
diverse and it was okay for the best part of a decade before
it got really tired.

Dubstep seems to be something I can only dip in to now and
then, and not for long. It's freshness as a sound soon
passes and it starts to get boring. There's just not enough
going on. And I do like minimalism in other places.

from what i can gather, around the time of the grime album
or tempa's first cd's this genre wasn't established in the
same way as it is now. there were PLENTY of tracks around
but the scene was pretty much unaccessible to outsiders.
everything seemes to have angry mc's on it or was the older
style of speed garage/2 step whatever. when Zinc came out
with 187 Trek or whatever it was called, this was a
milestone. the genre was turning instrumental (more
idm/techno/electronic whatever) but the scene was so small
it wasn;t getting the publicity it deserved. around that
time it was so fresh coz it took r&b and hip hop, morphed
with the faster drum n bass styles and came up with
something more the pace of Mills/UR/Electro stuff, with
contemporary sounds, really driving. These days the scene
centres more around dubstep and some tunes seem decent but
basically it can fail in the same way modern hip hop ot r&b
has. too sparse, too stoned, the production isn't there
enough a lot of the time - what i'm trying to say is listen
to king tubby or lee perry and they were surpassing it years
before. can we have more tunes like plasticman pump up the
jam or early bingo beats, trainer label, soul jah, something
to tech to, something to jack to, something to rave to.
without all the shouting of course. of all the slow stuff
tho, I reckon Kode 9 seems to be the king. How about some
outboard or analog delay or something, still a bit
playstation. some more broadranging compilations, that time
it used to feel like the first 10 or 15 warp releases, when
they were legendary. it's like a golden egg that has been
found but still not cracked. respect to all the producers,
bo bo bo!

messageboards are crud for generalising aren;t they sorry,
hope someone gets the point?

Couple of new recommendations:

Mala - Forgive

At the more dubby end of the Mala's spectrum, but still with
a few of the driving minimal techno stylings that made "left
leg out" so good. Also has probably the nicest piano line
I've heard in a dubstep/grime track, since slaughter mob's
"dub weapon"

Mundo & Lifted MC - Bring Murda

Don't worry, I know it sounds as if it'll be a grime track,
but it's not. Nice dubby track with dubbed out dancehall
style vocal snippets. This is the AA side to "We Kill You"
and personally, I rate it more highly than the A side.

J Sweet - Road Angel EP

Nearer to grime instrumentals than dubstep tracks, but I
quite liked a couple of the tracks on this.

A few more new Dubstep recommendations:

The Others - Africa (I only really like the title track)
Rusko - Acton Dread (not outstanding, but I quite like it
and I thought Rusko was pretty dire prior to hearing this)

Both of these are on Dub Police, which wasn't previously a
label I rated that highly.

Cyrus (of Random Trio Fame) - The Shadows Disc 1

This is the first of 3 discs that will make up his 'album'.
I have a few things by them, but I'd never been that fussed
by the Random Trio, or its individual members until hearing
this. Hopefully the other two are discs will be as good as
this. It's no Burial-beater, but this could be a contender
for 2nd place best dubstep album (as opposed to
compilation). All three tracks are solid (but not massively
original), but Gutter really stands out. Almost sounds like
Pinch in a few place.

Oh and of course Burial's "Unite" gets a proper release (CD
only though) on Monday on the A Box of Dub Compilation.
