Get over yourselves.

If you don't like it, move on.
If you don't like apple stuff, move on.

Get back to your grey plastic computers with shit operating
systems and listen to your Creative spunk mp3 players with
wanky interfaces. I really don't mind.

What's the difference between a grey plastic computer, and a
white one? Apart from $2000?

I once went to order a mac from apple. I rang them up and
was redirected to their american sales team. The woman asked
me if it was raining in England. I called her a cunt, put
down the phone and bought a PC. True story.

Here's a funny story. One of my work-mates hails from Sri
Lanka; and the other day he was complaining that there were
too many foreigners in Britain, apparently oblivious to the
irony. This happened only a few days after my amazingly
funny gag that soon all the immigrants in the UK would be
complaining about the new intake of EU outcasts coming over
to Britain and taking their jobs. Ah, the circle keeps
slowly turning.

Blegh, the reason Steve Jobs and Apple in general gets on my
nerves, aside from ushering in the noveau-hipster 'Random
Revolution,' is that they've homogenized everything.
Nothing is legitimate unless it's easily downloadable and
playable on your iPod. I have no problem with
disposability, but trying to reduce everything to neat
little mp3 playlists seems wrong. My problem rests not with
the device itself so much as how they market the lifestyle.
The word that bugs me is 'content'. Everyone, including Jobs
himself at the recent conference in Las Vegas, uses it, and
go on and on about 'exclusive content'. Oh boy! Does that
mean an extended trailer for Pirates of the Carribbean 3!?
.. that I can only get from iTunes?! Somebody pinch me! The
word is indicative of the fact that it doesn't really matter
what's being played, so long as it's being blared out of an
expensive pair of white earbuds. It's not music or movies
or art of any kind, it's 'content' - nothing more than fuel
for an utterly soulless device.

I don't get it, content is just a word to describe, well,
the contents of something. If you have Aphex Twin on your
ipod, therefore being the content of that ipod, it's still
music. I don't really get your point. How can there be so
much hate for a product, when it's up to you what you store
on the product?

I was trying to drop it because I get my panties in a wad
way too easily, but since you asked.. I suppose the reason
it gets to me is that: Yes, it's just a word, but when
someone says 'I'm going to go download some new content for
my iPod,' it suggests that the nature of that content,
ironically, is irrelevant. One goes and downloads whatever
new stuff/content is trendy or available, simply to satisfy
that restless, relentless, dull hunger for entertainment.
How carefully do you think that given 'new content' is going
to be listened to, or analyzed, or given the proper credit
and time it deserves, when five minutes ago its selection
was still indeterminate? If someone, on the other hand,
says 'I am going to download ____ from the album _____ and
I'm going to put it on my iPod for maximum convenience'.. no
problem. Am I making sense at all?

I understand what you mean, yes, but I don't see that a lot
of people would go and buy ipods just because apple
advertised about all kinds of extra content. So if you look
at it that way, all this extra content is just bonus. Sure a
new trailor for Pirates of the Carribean isn't going to
change anyones life, but if someone is interested in those
movies, and has an ipod because they like listening to music
on the go, then what's the harm?

I am using Apple as the whipping boy simply because I find
their marketing campaign and the accompanying lifestyle to
be the most offensive personally, as well as the fact that
Apple seemed to be the main topic in this thread.. but
you're right, the same could be said about others.

As far as the content thing goes, my complaint was basically
a sophomoric bitch session about the word choice more than
anything.. nevertheless, my point had very little to do with
the 'exclusive content' itself. Movie trailers etc. are
just one manifestation of it.. it's not just the fact that
people (me included) are hopeless slaves to entertainment,
which is somewhat unavoidable at times - It seems to have
reached a new low because we almost don't care what it is as
long as it's easily compatible with iTunes/whatever and fits
into some sort of neatly packaged lifestyle. Some seem to
enjoy bragging about how 'eclectic' their taste is, in
effect turning their playlists into a dick wagging contest.
It seems as though no one really pays attention to anything
unless it's 'approved,' like in that awful Time Warner DVR
commercial that says 'Now know the shows you're supposed to
know!' Those who choose to deviate from the mainstream,
musically and otherwise, end up suffering with the Hot Topic
syndrome.. neatly packaged deviance masquerading as
'randomness' or individuality. I am guilty of this as much
as the next guy, I just find that Apple has made large
strides in advancing a very unflattering side of our
culture.

I like Apple products.

Why would I want to buy an inferior product, when Apple
hardware is 10x better than a Compaq p.c? I've had my
Powerbook for almost 4 years now, I've never had a single
grumble with it.

Also, why would I want a Sony / Creative / whatever mp3
player? Apple hardware is amazing. Windows XP? Hmmm, that's
quality software right there, I can't wait for Vista /
Longhorn / virus magnet to be launched...

We do have flying cars, they're called aeroplanes.

Yes, and if it shares the same shitty code as their other

What bothers me, is that the ipod is seen as a "design
classic", when actually, it is, in many respects, rather
flawed. Quite aside from this, there's their shitty "just
buy our new one" customer service attitude when it comes to
broken ipods needing repairs. Do you think it's acceptable
the way they handled the battery life thing a few years
back? More than any other product, I know many people who
will never buy another ipod/apple beacuse of the crap way
they've handled things breaking down (charging more to fix
it than it would cost to buy a new one).

I really fail to see why people get damp knickers over ipods
in general. Yes, they have pleasent minimal aesthetics and
the jogwheel works quite well, but other than that I just
don't "get" them at all. In spite of their mediocrity, they
have legions of fanboys who think every predictable slight
improvement with each new ipod is some massively original
innovation that will revolutionise the way they listen to
music. I wouldn't buy one purely for their copy protection
reasons, let alone the myriad of other failings. Itunes is
shit too.

I also dislike how it's as much about the marketing as the
product. I mean, the ipod shuffle, it wasn't even an
original concept- I had an (admittedly smaller capacity) MP3
player like that almost a decade ago. Yet, the marketing
boys get hold of it and suddenly it's a must have thing. I
can understand this with clothing and cars (although it's
still detestable), but with a geeky personal stereo?

Steve "Hype-monger" Jobs gets on my nerves too. He slated
the USP of M$oft's rival player, saying how wireless
transfer of songs was a pointless feature and no one would
use it. You can guarantee had this feature debuted on the
ipod, he'd be bigging it up massively and it would become
very popular.

I bought an ipod, and I'm quite happy with it. I didn't buy
it because it was cool, or the in thing, or whatever, I
bought it because I thought it looked nice, it has enough
space for plenty of music for me, apple has a reputation as
being a good brand for quality and stuff when it comes to
computers, and I've been quite happy with the ipod since I
bought it.

As far as their new product releases, well they are cool
improvements. Not revolutionary, but still nice. They've
gotten smaller and smaller in size, but bigger and bigger in
storage space. For electronic things like this, smaller is
usually better, so I fail to see how these product changes
aren't good. I'm smart enough to know they're not life
changing things, but if I find their products work well
should I not buy a smaller ipod nano or shuffle just because
Apple are trying to fool me into thinking they're
revolutionary? All companies do that. You seem to dislike
their marketing tactics, but all companies try to market
their products based on image, and try to boost their
appeal, and I guess even trick the consumer sometimes into
thinking the product is better then it is. Once you realize
all companies do the same thing, it's just a matter of
ignoring the marketing and doing a bit of research to see
which product is really better or worse. Like I said, I
bought a ipod nano recently, and I don't think it was
because Apple suckered me into it and tricked me with their
marketing techniques. It's because I thought it was a good
product for what I wanted. And it has been!

Study marketing, then make cyanide capsules a "must have"
fashion accessory. The problem would soon solve itself.

Bob, I said rather flawed. Overpriced for what they
are, poor customer service (yes, this is part of the "total
product"), crippling copy protection (that stopped me giving
my music to a friend) and not exactly the best track
record in reliability. Creative MP3 players equivalent
models are generally speaking cheaper, more reliable, have a
larger capacity and much better customer support.
Unfortunately, they're not as aesthetically pleasing, nor
(critically) are they seen as "cool" by people tragic enough
to think cool can be bought, hence many people buy the apple
product instead.

Yeah, but companies should go out of their way to allow
their customers to steal stuff!

I've always found that a bit retarded, the way people almost
argue that it's their God given right to be able to download
music. Like the backlash that happened when Metallica went
after Napster. If I was Metallica, and I spent a year and
probably a load of cash in studio making a new album, I
wouldn't want people downloading it for free either. I'm not
saying I don't download music, but I don't pretend it's not

it's for this new breed of "pop geek" -- probably makes 100

always orders extra dressing at the olive garden, has a pet

I'm quite fed up with the way things are going, the future
is going to be super connected together, "multimedia" and
dumbed down to the point of annoyance.

iWish that that things were like the 80's, where technology
was tangible and advancements really where exciting. iDont
care about the latest iCrap from apple. It's poorly
designed, style over substance aimed for the sort of person
who carries a "man bag" and frequents starbucks.

The future now is a collection of badly programmed over
styled barely functional user interfaces on EVERY
conceivable item. Said items will also all wirelessly
connect together and allow the transfer of authorised
"content".
The new iToaster will have DRM pop up alerts on iTunes and
people will love it because it is shiny white and easy to do
by clicking with one finger.

Things in the future should be made to last. This throw-away
society is appaling. I would rather have a HP 85
than a new iThing. Built to last and well engineered, not
cheap crap from China.

iHate the whole apple culture and fanboys who whoop and
cheer about things and how everything is revolutionary, blah
blah. NO IT'S BORING! I can see all the "advancements" still
to be made, it's all just integration of everything into a
hub or phone and be dammed if you want separate useful
different things.

I don't want to be a starbucks man-bag wifi connected
multimedia iConformist. I want real electronics with real
buttons that works well. I don't want half baked software
running on a CPU crammed into a white box which claims to be
the best because everyone else has them... and everyone else
can't be wrong.... can they! just conform and get on before
this bandwagon runs you down.

iDespair.

Exactly dave_g, you put it far better than I could possibly

I'm no more interested in Apple bashing than I am in bashing

as if that was the be all and end all of our hopes and
