. It's poorly
designed, style over substance aimed for the sort of person
who carries a "man bag" and frequents starbucks.

Well, I think Apple are probably the only company that
actually care about design. And uh, I've neve set foot in a
starbucks and never will. I listen IDM and Bob Marley c'mon
you're loners on this one

Sorry, the italics on "my" music was supposed to suggest
"music I have made and own the rights to". A mate wanted a
copy of a track I'd done that he'd heard over my house. It's
on my girlfriend's ipod anyway, so rather than burn a cd
with the mp3 on (the cd masters were elsewhere) taking that
over seemed to be the best option. It wasn't till I got
there that I discovered that you can't copy files off an
ipod to another machine (even if you haven't marked the mp3
as "copyrighted"). Yes, I know you can DL some third party
app and hack about with it to get it working, but we had ten
minutes before we had to go out and in any event, why should
we have to? Any other decent MP3 player (or hell, my £10
off ebay 128mb one) wouldn't of had this problem. I just
don't get how mac fanboys can be so blase about things like
this not being a problem. Don't you have mates you share
music with?

I've never understood why hardware manufacturers build in
copy protection on devices. Even if you're a media company
too (EG Sony), it's your competitor's media that will be
stolen too, plus you'll recoup some of the losses (which
will occur anyway as people who want to pirate will find a
way/buy a product that can) by selling more of your hardware
because it will be more desirable.

it's the general idea of "keep moving or you're dead".

we made an mp3 player but we have to keep evolving so we'll
add on some crap, nothing that actually enhances the
player.

is it possible to purchase just a mobile phone? I mean a
mobile phone that's just mobile and a phone? not also an mp3
player, not also a camera, not also a palmtop. just a
phone.

it's funny when people say iPods are built well, seeing as
the inbuilt amplifier is pretty shit by any standards.

the thing that's really annoying about Apple is, as has been
already said a few times, that they're trying to sell you a
lifestyle. which is what most companies try to do, that's
true - Apple differs in that they're trying to make it come
off as if they're selling you a lifestyle AND are still hip
with the kids, part of the underground, against the grain
YEAH! etc.

oh, I wasn't replying to you specifically, but rather adding
to the "what I hate about recent times" mood of the thread..
It's a trend recently for people to bitch about copy
protection as if it was the culmination of all evil.

If I want to share my own music with people, I burn them a
cd. If I want to share other peoples music with people, I
tell them I found something new and good and let them listen
to it. Then I tell them to buy it if they like it.

Some company have released such a phone in Japan of all
places, and it did quite well. I forget the name of the
company, i saw it on Euronews. Dunno why they didn't make it
over here. There's a huge market for them. They were ultra
cheap too.

I was wondering how much Apple paid the BBC for all the
advertising, seeing as the first places I saw it were on the
BBC news website and then a feature on the BBC World
channel. Which made a change from their usual BBC The Middle
East, we mean The World, scheduling.

no one said you had to download the vids and music from the
itunes store. within weeks of its release, a version of
zudeo will be available for it and all the crying ninnies
can wipe the tears from their eyes.

its just a little handheld computer/comm device with a good
OS and an efficient interface, nothing to be afraid of.

i think the thing that you (and the rest of the people that
are saying the same thing as you) aren't getting is that
it's all like.. They're talking down to you, the consumer.
They're treating the public like idiots or juveniles.

It's not exactly the product that's generating all this
fuss, but the hype and apple-adulation that goes along with
its release - especially when you take into account the fact
that it's just a phone/mp3 player with a special offer of
trailers for pirates of the carribean and other shit
hollywood titles on it.

I didn't say that all very well but i hope you get my jist.

Also, as a side node, this is the point that I was going to
make to the Funkmeister earlier.

I like their relentless reappropriating of already existing
technology, not just phones, but according to Apple, the
Finger!

"We are all born with the ultimate pointing device - our
fingers - and iPhone uses them to create the most
revolutionary user interface since the mouse,"
said Mr
Jobs.

I USE MY "iFINGERS" ALREADY TO USE A MOUSE, AND A KEYBOARD,
AND PRESS BUTTONS, AND SCRATCH MY ARSE, DON'T MAKE OUT
YOU'VE INVENTED FUCKING FINGERS and the concept of HOW TO
USE YOUR HANDS.

I can see the point about Apple's marketing being obtrusive.
But to call the Mac zealots poor iLife junkies and whatnot
is a bridge too far. That iLife bling bling is just a very
thin shell which is pretty easily penetrable. Even for the
avarage Mac-geek. Underneath all it is, most of the time
some state of the art engineering. The userinterface, or
rather the user-experience is, again, years beyond anything
else on the market. A company which wants to design a device
with the functionality of the iPhone, without the use of a
normal keyboard, had, up onto this point, a lot of designing
problems to overcome. Few companies would have succeeded
like Apple did. I think that deserves a lot of respect,
regardless of the obtrusive marketing techniques. Even if
the iPhone turns out to be unsuccesfull, in terms of units
sold, the whole industry has yet again a product it can
learn from and develop even better products (yes i think
it's a good product).
All the hate is just a pitty form of anti-hype. If you
can't, or don't want to look past all the iLife hype there's
not much point discussing it, isn't it?

All this talk of design... I see a 3.5" screen showing bland
stock photography wallpaper and a clock. I bet I can look at
my watch quicker than fish out my phone.

If you don't want to look past some photo's posted of an
iPhone without having seen what it actually does, there's
not much to discuss about. With that I can agree.

beyond that I don't give a fuck if you want to fetishise a
phone.

seeing the amount of posts you've made on the subject in
only 24 hours, you clearly do give a fuck, dear dog_belch.
but, if you want to keep on hating, i won't give a fuck
anymore. this is not an apple-forum. and thank god for that!

Yeah I noticed that too. I was tempted to eMail the bbc and
ask them why they're using brand-specific terms like iPod
rather than the generic terms such as mp3-player. It's my
only real gripe against that fine corporation.

I don't think it's as much about them talking down to people
as it is people actually wanting what they give them, which
is discouraging if you have a sensible bone somewhere in
your body (preferably close to the jawbone).

First, "Poor Britain, 1000 different ungrateful cultures all
hanging
around one vast carpark", that's an amazing line dog_belch!

I don't want to get too drawn into this whole circular
debate but...
I use Apple products. I am selective in what I use. I am not
a fanboy. I've used Apple products for the last 16 years,
but never the latest and greatest. The company has been
gradually moving away from my personal ideals for a long
time now, but really, it doesn't matter.
If a piece of technology is useful, and not over-priced, and
of sufficient quality, I will get it if I need it. Whether
it be from Apple, Microsoft or Amiga.
My mouse is Microsoft, and it's lasted over 4 years. My
screen was stolen from a synchrotron and is "Eizo". My
"handheld gaming device" is Nintendo, I have an iPod Mini
etc. etc.
I used to argue about this sort of thing with people, but
then one day I realised it wasn't worth it. Allying
yourself, emotionally or economically, is a waste of time
and money. They don't give a shit about you, and that's just
what they want you to do.
Don't give them the pleasure. Be a discerning, pragmatic and
intelligent person, not just a rabid "brand-conscious"
consumer.

That's an awful lot of words for telling why he disagrees
with Jobs calling the iPhone revolutionary. Way too much
words. He could have made the same point in a quarter (pun
intended) of the size. Too bad he's taking his (Jobs) words
out of context too. The context of Jobs' story being the
first Apple computer, the iPod and finally the iPhone.
That's clearly another kind of 'revolutionary' the article
is about (nuclear power, flight, contraception - funny how
he uses internet instead of computer, btw).

Of course he needs lots of words. He's trying to compare
apples (bad pun) with oranges.
