What will Vista do to music makers?

some scary stuff

Degraded sound and video? Extra processing overhead for
encryption and device polling? The ability to REVOKE
hardware drivers?!

...the fuck...?!

An interesting read. I can see a lot of people moving over
to linux or buying hardware hacks or software hacks.
It seems M$ are trying to gain a mega monopoly over content
and "do an iTunes", but it won't work. There are enough
clever people out there to be able to hack it.
These hacks will be popular with people since it gives them
MORE functionality, so any AV company that blocks it will be
on a suicide trip too.

simple solution: don't buy vista, don't buy protected
content. Hit them where it hurts.

I would suggest just getting something like ubuntu now, it's
easy enough for most computer users to get a good grip on in
less than a day and you're not too embedded with M$ and all
their crap.

Oh come on, if this were true the only people it would
affect are the people that I would kick up the arse too,
seasoned haxX03 pirates that use their PC as their
woebegotten Enterntainment Pod. Oh no, my ripped off
torrents don't work, suddenly all the albums I stole don't
sound so sexy. Fuck them. Play a CD on your stereo, play a
DVD on a DVD player. Wait until the future provides a viable
system that integrates all media and not these fucking half
measures presented today. And shut up, a couple of years ago
you had to wait until the TV companies got round to showing
a film, now everything's at your fingertips it's "Ooooh, the
flac quality on this cassette bootleg isn't high
fidelity",.. fucking people, apparently so clever. You're
areseholes. Yes I've been drinking.

quiet.

well i guess the point is that they would (deliberately) be
limiting the functions that a computer is capable of. that's
fucked up.

Well as a high profile company with a lot at stake I guess
they have to be seen to take certain measures and, well, you
don't have to buy their OS, and well, well, well, well etc.

I really didn't bother reading all of it, but.. wasn't it
all about "protected" content like blu-ray or dvds or
whatever? So I guess my question is "what would vista
do to music makers?"

You know, I don't think it will do much to musicmakers.
Well, at least ones that use hardware that is up to date.
The bit about the aged drivers/unsigned drivers is troubling
though. Pretty much, that renders half of all music hardware
useless when it interfaces with your computer.

Doesn't affect me much. Any thing I have tried to connect to
my computer recently hasn't worked properly, because any
piece of equipment that is made for the sub$1000 area seems
poorly set up for what its supposed to do. Now that I am
used to everything working well as soon as the midi cables
are connected, spending as much as a half hour dicking
around with crappy drivers feels like a lot of time waisted.

about Vista. If you want a slick looking and virus-free OS,
buy a Mac.

It's not just MAKING music. It's distributing it that could
be a problem. What about uploading you own music to the net?
What if Microsoft decides you can only record low bitrate
analog in and encode directly to 64k WMA, because you just
might be pirating something? And on top of that what if it
pulls a Zune and only lets people listen to your track for 3
plays or 3 days before disabling it? All of this can be
added in an automatic update patch if it isn't there
already.

I mean, Justin Timberlake has to be protected from piracy!
If that prevents people from publishing their own music,
well, too bad. It probably wouldn't have been good anyhow.
The only way you know music is good is if an RIAA member
label wants to sell it to you. They're providing a valuable
tastemaking service for a modest fee.

Great, so I'll be the guy whose next computer doesn't work
because the closed source DRM compatible drivers signed by
Microsoft only work in Vista. Oh well, why did I want a
computer anyways. I can play Drunken Heiress© with

Yeah, Ubuntu is terrific. I like it a lot. I'm hoping more
commercial music software will get ported to Linux,
following the example of Energy XT.

My only real worry is that eventually, maybe sooner rather
than later, pretty much all computer audio / video hardware
will have encryption keys that need to shake hands with a
trusted platform like Windows or Mac in order to work in
high quality mode. That will pose huge problems for open
source operating systems.

it will probably make the internet music world collapse, but
probably not, since most internet musicians won't be stupid
enough to upgrade to Vista.

I'll keep my old Windows and Firefox, thank you.
