Why bother. The only place the term is used, is on geeky messageboards. 99% of the world's population hasn't ever heard of the term, or the music. Why not keep it that way.

True. It was spawned at the old hyperreal mailing list so it's the network administrators fault.
It matters to me only when asked what music I'm into and find myself cringing at the genre description I end up using!

IDM is an acronym for "Intelligent Dance Music", but that in turn is an acronym for "Idiotic Nutsack Tickling Elephant Loogie Licking Itchy Green Edible Neon Titty Dragging Anarchic Nipple Condensation Eating Minty Unholy Shitty Iridescent Clumps"
I put the accent on the D.

But lets be honest, how many intelligent people have you met who listen almost exclusively to dance music? I'm not talking about liking the odd chemical brothers/prodigy/underworld track. I mean people who have nothing in their record collection but those shitty "Ministry of Sound" and "Ibiza Anthems" compilations that Woolworths sell.
Not saying you don't get fuckwits who listen to IDM, but by and large people like IDM are more intelligent than people whose favourite artist is Jurgen Vines.

id like to have a major study on that...
two friends of mine (one is a club owner) recently got very sad about that the club only runs when the djs play minimal techhouse which is the most common electro played in german clubs.
they believe that people who only like that simply dont understand anything with a broken beat, i say that most of those people are simply bad educated in a musical way,
mostly by the media ...
btw: i didnt mean to say that idm consist of broken beats only

Lots and lots of college kids listen to those Ibiza Anthems and Ministry Of Sound kinda things. Lots of them who listen more to music than Joe Sixpack have their musical fetishes, but rarely it's 'IDM'. I hate to bring it to you, but there's not much intelligent about IDM. A lot of older Aphex is just as monotonous as any other Ibiza Anthem. If there's something intelligent 80% of the time it has to do with the techniques being used. Musically speaking it's rarely better than what else is out there.

so being college student makes you intelligent?
idm people don't have higher iq's, but they are somewhat more open minded maybe. though as you say, there's a lot of music out there that is much more challenging than idm as we (here on xltronic) know it :)

i wouldnt consider some old afx techno as idm though the term came up somewhere in the 90s already, but still some old afx had more than the simple beat that formed techno in the first place and analogue bubblebath 3 and caustic window tracks really make a difference imo

yeah, the what makes people intelligent discussion... would you think that listening to idm is a better indicator of intelligence than going to college? idm people don't have higher iq's, but they more intelligent nevertheless?
think what you like, but there's one point being made here - once again - and that's the load of crap which comes from the intelligence discussion.
please, lets stick to the "all pigs are equal, but some are more equal"-mantra and forget about the intelligence-issue.

i never said they're more intelligent. i said open minded which is a big difference, for me anyway..also, do you know lots of people into idm without colege education? college is really something common nowdays..i know lots of people with college education who are plain idiots and i know very few idiots among people who enjoy different music (unfortunately i don't know many idm people around here, so i i can't judge on that, but from my experince in old europe people attending idm gigs are pretty much open minded people).

perhaps idm'ers are more openminded. i tend to think that people who are into idm will generally think that other idmers are just as 'openminded' as they are, just because they have the same tastes. it's an illusion. they're probably just as openminded to the Ibiza Anthems as the Ibiza-minded people are towards IDM.
don't get me wrong, IDM-heads are extremely cool people and i could go gay on all of you any time of day, but in the end it is still another example of "some are more equal than others".

i know what you mean, and it's definitelly a bit of that 'influence' as well. i don't know what people you refer to with ibiza anthems people, i mean whether you're being literal or you just mean people into mainstream music, but i'd say people into different music are interested in lets say other art as well, when those ibiza people are more into partying and clubbing. thought there are always exceptions.
