i just started downloading "closer" and listened to the
first 3 tracks.

god damn this is horrible.

how can anyone like this? i guess i can appreciate the
creativity and the songwriting, but jesus does it sound
terrible. the singer sounds like jim morrison only bad, and
the production makes my had hurt. maybe if someone else
performed this material it could sound better, but i can't
stand to listen to this anymore.

can someone explain to me why this is enjoyable to listen
to?

a person to hang themselves.

Let's get over-excited here. I like their music, but I can
certainly see that it's not for everybody.

brilliant, and has influenced a lot of other artists.

I agree about giving them a second chance. The first time I
listened to them I didn't like them, but I downloaded all
their stuff and gave it a second try, and really liked it.

I know where you're going wrong, you miserable fucking cunt,
it starts here

" i just started downloading "closer" and listened to
the

"

Oh good for you, you've downloaded something, half listened
to it, and trashed it.

If you're interested in them, buy a fucking album. If you're
like "wooah dude, what's all the fuss about Joy Division,
download.. skip.. download.. skip... oh.. I don't even know
what I've downloaded... THEY'RE RUBBISH"

No, you are a cunt, you are rubbish. I could no more explain
to you why they're one of the only good bands ever to form a
fucking band, than I could find the time to describe what a
cunt you are.

haha, i agree on some points there. I mean Closer is an
absolutely amazing album. This culture of downloading music,
especially individual tracks promotes a desire for instant
gratification, when an album like this should be listened to
attentively, lyrics, atmosphere, mood... you just don't get
any of that when you download a couple of tracks and listen
to them on your computer while your doing whatever else you
are doing.

If ever there was an "album" album it is Closer. Well done
to new bands now that, due to market pressures, have to cram
their whole raison d'etre into the first 2 seconds of any of
their songs, for fear of losing any of their witless
audience all of which have ADD. Closer came out in 1980,
19..fucking..80. 26 cunting years ago. And it's still
powerful, moving, unmatched... atmospheric, post punk, pop,
poetry.. "Ohh I downloaded three tracks and WTF ?? LOL
...
" FUCK YOU, honestly, fuck you and your barren piss
life.

it took me a bit to get into joy divison but now i
absolutely love them. some stuff takes a bit of time if
you're not used to its aesthetic. have a few listens to it
all, let it marinate a little for a few days, go back if you
feel the attraction. not much else to do, is there?

All the things you don't like about the album (Emo Curtis'
grim warbling , the minimalist playing, the rough
production) are all part of the appeal, so this just isn't
your thing. You suck. Just kidding. But the album most
definitely does not suck.

Like Leonard Cohen, who's melancholic and beautifully
melodic rather than the facile "Depressing and Dreary" which
he's criminally labelled as... I was disgusted to read that
his Greatest Hits album had been voted as The Most
Depressing Album ever by some shitty magazine... like a Take
That album isn't a more depressing listen??

Obviously I haven't listened to them all, but most of the
ones I've listened to so far have been.. a lot of
interesting demos which ended up different... like a version
of Starting Over which had a different name and different
lyrics. Worth the big download I'd say.

Shit, not too much to say after dog_delch, he seems to have
covered it all...but I'd just like to state on a purely
musically level--just notes being played, either from
instruments or vocally, not all the hype that comes with
bands--Joy Division created songs that literate musicians
only wish they could. There's actual counterpoint between
the bass and guitar. Hook's bass work is amazing if not
genius at times. It perfectly completements Sumner's lousy
guitar playing and Ian's simple but effective vocal
melodies. All the parts each of the band members offer is
unique alone, but put togehter they shine beautifully. I'm
not much into "worshipping" popular music much, but this
band has my devotion fisrt on a musical level then comes
Ian's lyrics which just makes it all something undeniably
great. Undeniably great.

i think you have some issues yourself if you get that riled
up if i insult your little band.

and i almost always listen to entire albums, but when i
listen to the first half of the album (i did listen past the
first 3, but not long) and it's that terrible, i don't
really feel like bothering with the rest.

but i guess you can keep feeling good about yourself for how
much you can insult me for not liking it. have fun, i still
think their music sucks cocks. big ones.

basically you cant form a very fair opinion of a band on 3

You need to know at least what the music sounds like, not
just skip through a couple of tracks. Fucking hell. No, you
needn't have a degree in Pop History. If I listen to
something wholly derivative YES I can make a snap decision
because it's like reading musical shorthand. If I listen to
something that's different, unique, new, unfamiliar, I might
have to give it a few goes before I'd fire up the Internet
and say something as fucking stupid as "hey, downloaded the
first three tracks, lol, wtf?? This is shit"

closer IS a pile of shit album. i really dont understand how

but new order is SO much better. most of the other "post

band i can think of that overall sucked more than joy

Magazine is indeed very mediocre. But a few of their songs
have really Mega-Man-ish melodies. That's about the only
remarkable thing about them though.
