"I could care less"

"I could care less..."

This phrase will go down in future history books as an
international joke, a saying in worldwide folklore, when our
grandchildren's grandchildren are studying the 21st
Century's Great Downfall of the United States.

History teachers in the future will explain to students that
the Great Downfall was triggered by the American people's
impressive aptitude for speaking without thinking about what
they're saying.

I think the downfall of the western world isn't going to be
triggered by any phrase at all. It will be from people who
care too much about things they really shouldn't be
bothering themselves with at all.

'swears': ""I could care less?" + little shrug. Makes total
sense."

no it doesn't you illiterate cunt. think about the meaning
of the words. you stupid stupid stupid fucking idiot. if you
want to imply that you don't give a fuck about something,
then you should say "i couldn't care less" i.e. you care so
little that you couldn't possibly care any less. do you get
it now? fucking fucking fuck fuck fuck fuck fucking stupid
fuck fucks, a whole nation of stupid fucks. the world is
fucked. we're all doomed by these stupid fucking idiots.

Of course I understand that "I couldn't care less." is the
intended meaning. That's what sarcasm is: the opposite of
what you mean. You seem to be the one having trouble
understanding, there's no need to throw a flid about it.

offline Bill Burroughs from Colombia on 2006-10-29 11:58 [#01994548]

you're trying to tell me that all the americans who say 'i
could care less' are doing it to be sarcastic.

that is quite definitely bullshit.

offline swears from junk sleep on 2006-10-29 12:04 [#01994553]

It always seems to be said with a little question intonation
like they're slighty incredulous about the idea of taking
something less seriously. It sounds cool anyway.

Your screen name is an American writer. Any attack you could
make against american popular culture could be just as
easily made against any western country. Particularly
Britain, as since Thatcher, we have become increasingly
Americanised.

offline Bill Burroughs from Colombia on 2006-10-29 12:33 [#01994566]

that is my real name, thatcher was a cunt, and finally, no
the same attacks could not be made against any other country
because even Jimmy Bungooloogonga in the deepest jungle of
Borneo can speak better English than most Americans.

Minor peeve, but a peeve to be sure.

I'm more peeved at people who write "definately". I suppose
I should be glad that they're writing at all instead of
grunting and scratching their asses with the keyboard like
Chuck Klosterman.

you are right

it's stupid anyway

"I could care less" is like someone saying it who thinks
they're really clever for saying "yes, that's right, i could
care less more than i do!"

yeah, so it's not 'definately', nor is it 'rediculous', nor
is it 'i could care less', nor is it 'i could give two
shits', nor is it 'symantically'.

in fact, i now firmly believe that America's schools must be
the worst in the western world.
