Moving in with strangers

This seems as good a place as any to ask for advice...

Been living back at home with my parents on the Wirral for
about a year now after living with some old school mates in
a shared house in Liverpool. I've worked in office admin
since leaving sixth form, but my mates have all either moved
back home after finishing their degrees or moved to other
parts of the country. So I don't know anybody that wants to
share a flat/house. I'm 23 now, and living at home is not
for me, I'm missing out on a lot of the clubbing and
socialising that living away from "home" would entail. (And
to be honest I feel like a bit of a saddo) I'm not earning a
bad wage and could probably afford up to £60-70 per week
rent.

Anyway...does anybody know of any good websites or agencies
for finding shared properties in a particular area? I would
like to meet my potential co-occupants first and make sure
we're compatible before making a decision. Are there a lot
of single rooms up for rent in cities like Liverpool? Or am
I looking at renting my own place?

Any advice or links to useful sites would be appreciated.

Yes, it's very sad. But rents/property prices are high in
England. I'm just scared of turning into the nerdy 40 year
old guy in the office that lives with his elderly mum and
dad. I need to get out enjoy myself again.

Seriously....

There will be Ads in the Liverpool Echo or similar, you also
might be able to move in with students after crap student
tend to quit round about Christmas time.

I'm not a student though, and I've just missed out on the
beginning of term if I was moving in with students. I'd
rather move in with some people a bit older (22-30) that
earn a bit of cash and will pay their rent and not nick my
food.

definately craigslist.com/org/whatever

it lists by area which can sometimes be a pain. if your area
isn't listed just find one nearby.

next best place probably.

I would avoid living with students.

Why don't you find a girlfriend/boyfriend who already has a
nice place and move in?

Or throw your parents out

school split a lip and then the p.e teachers would break it
up. cunts.

Because:

I feel like a sad bastard, I am getting under my parents
feet.

I like the company of other young people.

I want to live in Liverpool as opposed to the hillbilly
wirral.

I want to make some more new mates as my old mates are
getting boring and never go clubbing anymore.

I would like to be able to walk into work in the city centre
in the morning, rather than pay £70 a month for a travel
pass.

I can't really take girls back to my folks' place.

haha, I totally wouldn't be able to go back to living at
home.. with family around you, even if there isn't little
room, everything feels crowded.. maybe because with family
they're family so they can go wherever they want all the
time but roomates respect your privacy so you get to be
alone when you need to.

"so they can go wherever they want"

that's pretty bad..you don't know privacy in your family?

offline Drunken Mastah from OPPERKLASSESVIN!!! (Norway) on 2006-10-16 18:26 [#01987984]

one thing, though, if you're moving in with strangers...
make sure you all have some proper house rules 'cause you
never know what strangers are gonna do, but if you establish
the rules (don't make them too rigid, and don't do the
mistake of having the "one guy does all the cleaning this
week then another guy next week" rule.. divide all common
areas between all people living there.. one to the kitchen,
one to the hall, one to the bathroom, etc, and rotate it),
seeing as you don't know them and they don't know you
everyone will be too afraid of each other to not do what
they're supposed to.

well, it's more like.. even if they're not in the room, the
room is theirs to occupy, if you know what I mean.. like if
your mom told you to clean your room or something.. if it
was your room, you'd clean it when you felt it needed
cleaning, but since it isn't your room (it's in your
parents' house), you have "them" in the room with you at all
times and you can't well have a party with lots of people at
your parents house, can you? just because it's your parents
house, and not yours.

I think the feeling is called "smothering."

when I first moved out I moved to a place where it was only
me.. that felt really really empty, but I got used to it.
now I'm living with two mates, and we're all in agreement
about certain things, and we take things lightly so there's
lots and lots of freedom plus company!

parents were at home. i had it a bit different than most
people living at home i suppose. i pretty much live alone

Swears, when I was 22 and working I moved into a student
house. It wasn't too bad as the ones I lived with were all
reasonably serious about their studies (so not pissed up
playing music at 4am every night) and were very good about
paying their share of bills and not nicking food. I
recognise this was quite lucky, but I knew one of them
already and we veto'd the others. I can see the attraction
of living with another "young professional" or two, but both
shared houses I lived in were less pleasent to live in (than
student houses). A mate who lives in a shared house now has
found the same thing. In one flat I lived in (just me and a
girl) the other party did my head in. This girl was initally
very accomadating and fairly pleasent, but as time went on,
she treated my presence as an inconvenience (she seemed to
forget that it was my rent that was enabling her to stay
there) and became an absolute fucking harriden. When it came
to us moving out (lease expired), she broke the terms of the
tenency agreement and then tried to charge me more than we
had agreed for the cost of the rent. I suppose what I'm
saying is don't assume "students bad, professionals good"
always rings true.

If you are going to live in a student house, try to find a
final year students' one, or ideally a post graduates'
house. They tend to be a bit more civil and the wastrels
have usually been filtered out by then.

I'd love the club scene in Berlin. But...

I'd miss my mates/family.

I've got a pretty good job over here, heard unemployment is
pretty high in Germany.

Don't speak German, I know a lot of mainlnd euros speak
English, but it seems a bit rude.

Will definately try to go next year or maybe to Barcelona.
