MiniDisc

Edition 1 : 1998 - black and white
Edition 2 : 2001 - black and gold

Compact Disc

Edition 3 : 2006

This compact disc is the reissue of the highly acclaimed
(Prix Ars Electronica Winner) MiniDisc-only release from
1998, about which they said:

"This is the first ever MiniDisc only release." (Alan
Phillips, Sony Software)

This Gescom Production, assembled by Sean Booth and Rob
Brown [Autechre] and Russell Haswell, has conquered the
technological restrictions inherent in the MiniDisc format.
Battling against the ATRAC compression system, they have
succeeded in producing a masterful perambulation of sonic
experimentation. 45 tracks have been sliced into 88 portions
for your ease of dissemble-age. Thus the listener can loop
and shuffle at will. Resulting carnage. Culling together
years of source material, "MiniDisc" is a collection of
multi-styled mood music, ranging from full on hip-hop beats
to shoe-gazing ambience to bangin'.

This doesn't exactly look legit. And what would be the
logic in releasing music specifically produced for minidisc
on CD? Rubbish.

For something to be legit I would think the artist and
everyone involved should be in agreement of a rerelease.
Especially with something like this, sold on the basis it
was a minidisc exclusive.

Surely it now loses its title as the worlds first minidisc
only release.

from what I've heard, the production of non-recordable
minidiscs have been discontinued, so any reissues of the
minidisc would have to be on cd. it loses a bit of the
appeal, not having the zero skip time featured on the
minidiscs and that you can loop individual bits seamlessly.
I think it's legit, seeing as the minidisc was issued by
touch in the first place, and it's the touch webshop. oh
well I got the first issue anyway, so I'm in no hurry
getting this

i guess at least one of the artist is extremely involved in
that reissue 'cause its on OR (a Touch sublabel) & OR is
r.haswell label & he did the artwork too (see the other OR
MD compilation feat. gescom, hecker etc..) etc

I've got the original md edition too. I was expecting stuff
like "go sumo" and that, but this is quite boring crap
instead. Just random soundfiles. Something for eBay? :)

Some good ambient pieces on this.

Listening to it on shuffle as intended is... interesting

Are you joking?
Vinyl is possible because they could put random skip points
in the so the needles skitters. Depending on the quality of
your deck, needle and weight of the arm you'd get a
different selection every time. There is a release out like
that but I can't remember what it's called. I have no idea
how to search that shit out either.

you mean like putting ramps on vinyl records so that the
needle skips 5 inches off of the album onto another point on
the press?

the shuffle with no gaps is easy to get if you load the cd
into the computer and then play the flacs
