Mr. Hammond is off intensive care now, it is said.
but he still could die at Any Given Moment, ofcourse - he is a Top Gear presenter after all.

Why was that guy that was trying to commit suicide arrested?
I know celebrities are people but it always seems really surreal when they get seriously injured/die

Knievel is a (wheelchair-bound) legend. You know the stunt where he tried to jump those double decker buses? He knew he was going to fail before he even tried it. Basically a tuning part for his bike that would make it a bit lighter/faster hadn't arrived and his mechanic was pleading with him not to do it. Knievel didn't give a fuck, he said (to paraphrase), "Well, it's too late now, all those people are here and they have paid their money. I have to attempt it." He knew he would crash and hit the very last bus.
Money can't buy the respect you get for doing that.

So, you think he'd get more respect if he walked out amid rapturous applause, took the mike from the MC and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, some bits for the bike haven't arrived and I don't think I'll make it, so I won't try it. There will be no refunds. Thank you and goodnight."
Had he done that, his career would have been over and his legend would be ruined. He'd be remembered as "the man who chickened out." Reckon Ricky-boy would have made a track called, "Knievel" if he had?
Instead, he broke his pelvis and announced his retirement. He then came out of retirement and actually jumped more buses than he had tried the day he crashed. That's what really made him a legend.

if he'd said "sorry, but this'll cripple me, I'm not doing it", he'd get my respect, yes.
showing "weakness" in such a situation is always harder to do.
sure, people will like it more when someone does something completely stupid and dangerous, but they're the ones looking on, they're not in danger of anything, they'd shit their pants even thinking about doing the same.
who cares about being "a legend" if it means you put yourself in a wheelchair or maybe even kill yourself. wow, great going, really impressive.

See, crashing is an occupational hazard for stunt riders.
Here's the clip I was talking about. From the way he talks in it, it sounds more like he had doubts if he'd make it. Stuff I've read makes it sound more like he knew for sure that he couldn't, so I don't know which the true story is.

but, i'm pretty sure this happed too quickly for him to have any control over it.

People love a good crash, what people love even more is a good crash involving a celebrity, and usually it annoys me. Come to Richard Hammond, though, and it's hard to imagine anyone's concern is ingenuine.
