Hi.
I recently aquired a pc from a friend which came with winxp installed. When i plugged in my old HD as slave disk which also had winxp installed, i could read all data except for what used to be the C: area (windows) on that disk.
It sees the partition, but when i click it it says 'drive not formatted'
whats this mean and how do i get back the data (my documents, favorites etc)?
I suppose this is some sort of safety action caused by the system when it finds 2 operating systems, or something. At least i hope so.

"i could read all data except for what used to be the C: area (windows) on that disk. "
clarify: so you also have another partition (eg D:) with more data?
which disk do you want to use as your primary XP-drive?

yes there are other partitions on that disk which are accessible. only the windows partition isnt.
redrum, if it's a physical problem, i dont think the disk would show the other partitions.

i want to run winxp from the 'new' disk and it's running fine so no worries there. the only problem is that there was data in the 'my documents' folder which was of course part of the windows partition (yes i had a seperate partition on the old disk for win)
i dont know what file system. does it matter? because it reads the other partitions just fine.

what else can i say to clear this up a bit more..
i also tried to revert to the old setup by hooking up ONLY the old disk with the 'faulty' windows partition but it said
OS NOT FOUND.
i hope this isnt bad :(

There are shitloads of tools out there to recover lost partitions. Do a googlesearch for "recover partitions". I wouldn't panic until I've tried at least 3-4 different software. Just make sure to not use any software which might write to the disk. Use read-only software.
Tip! Download and install GetDataBack.... or use any of the ads shown on this page. ;)
