I'm thinking of buying a DSLR, my ixus is great for on the
fly pics but no good for professional type stuff. Anyhow
I've been looking at the Fujifilm S9500 and the S7500, it
seems the best for the money, although the fact that it
doesnt take SD card is annoying (as i can get 1gb for a
tenner). Anyhow I dont know much about DSLR's was just
wondering what people thought, bare in mind I'm only looking
to spend about £300 because i can't afford to pay £600 for
a lush canon!

Wait until you can afford something like the Canon 350D
which you can pick up new for 450.

prepare to spend money on good glass
a good body with mediochre-shit glass is going to make you
unhappy.

sacrifice a better body for better glass

Bollocks. You should never sacrifice on the body of a
Digital SLR in favour of the 'glass'...the quality of the
sensor is as important as the lense.

thats why i like dthe look of the S9500 they seem to have
put some real thought into the sensor!

also I've no intention of spending loads on a cam and then
loads on a bunch of different lenses, i like photography but
i don't need a whole array of lenses for it!

Well then, you'll probably get some model we would either
never see or wouldn't see for about 10 months and for about
half the price.

Get me a 100" TV while you're there.

mobile phone that ahs digital TV on it!

ecnad,
on a budget, a 350d or equiv will be PLENTY of sensor
quality for him

go full frame and youll need primes anyway
vignetting + full frame sensor = will multiply the flaws in
cheaper glass faster than 1.6x crop sensor.

Oh, I agree with that. I thought you were saying it would
be OK going sub 350D level on the body for better lense
quality.

fuji compacts really suck. ha ha just look at that so called
tilt screen, lol.

seriously tho, the 9500 looks pretty ok. but go to
dpreview.com instead of fujifilm.com.

HUGE FUCKIN CAMERA

that said, i'd also say go for a 350d.

i think fuji is coming out with one that will do IR and UV
as well.

That would be hot
doing IR with cheap filters = introduces a lot of noise

i have yet to master it but then again ive only taken like
20 IR pictures total over the past couple years

need to start it again

IR is fuckin' sweet.

from what i've seen, modded canon G3 and G5's work really
well for this.

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2006-08-15 14:39 [#01954523]
Points: 18368 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

yeah exactely
i dont have the funds to get a 10d or 300d and have it mod'd
for IR only

but ffast shutter speed IR would be soooo lush

ugh
20second exposures make my nilly limp
:(

tripod required :(

cameras have limited dynamic range (measured in stops of
light)

to keep it simple
pointing your camera at the sun
the camera isn't going to capture all the detail in the
highlights and the shadows
it only has a range it can account for

hdr takes 2 images (say, one image exposed for the
highlights (bright sky), and another image exposed for the
shadows (say, trees, shadows, etc)

then they are merged / layred on top of each other

I just found a Canon KISS with EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 II USM
lens on amazon jp for only £377! what a fucking bargain!
I've no idea what the KISS is though it looks just like the
EOS 300D

Buy my ixus and I'll get it when i arrive!

no idea
the kit lens is pretty soft (18-55)
i'd suggest www.fredmiranda.com and www.dpreview.com

i really like the FM forums
go to the reviews section and start reading
i wouldn't buy anything right away
spend a week or 2 just sifting thru

The KISS is actually the EOS 350D, admitedly teh lens isn't
rated to high, but it might be a cheaper option untill i can
afford a better lens than just buying the body, but then i
dont know jack about lenses lol!

if you dont want to spend the money for a canon, get a
pentax, i hear good things about the brand, though i shoot a
canon myself.

a good starter lens if you go with the canon
tamron 28-75 2.8
sharp sharp sharp

build quality is OK, it's kinda loud AF, not the fastest AF
(compared to L glass) but it is sharp as HELL

most of the photos on my image dump were taken with it
can't beat it for the price, like $300

OOOOO Nikon D70 is only £270 BARGAIN!

So now I'm torn between...
Canon EOS 350d£377
Nikon D70£270
Fujifilm S9500£300

/head explodes!

d70 vs 350d

canon and nikon are both good, they will give you lots of
room to grow.
