iPod Alternatives

My iPod appears to have given up the ghost entirely.
Doesn't respond to anything. It's dead. Dodo style.

Nearly 3 years old. I don't think that's good enough so I'd
rather not get another iPod to be honest. They're great but
I'd expect at least 5 years from an item of that price.

Soooo, waht's a good alternative to the iPod. I don't care
about video features. They're pointless. The larger the
drive space the better. I want more than the 40gigs on my
now broken one.

Any pointers would be awesome.
Of course, any tips on fixing my iPod cheaply would be even
better.

Just to be clear, when I say dead. I mean, nothing happens
when I press a button (the hold isn't on by the way). The
screen doesn't come on, the drive doesn't whir. No sign of
life. When I plug it into my computer hte exact same thing
happens. Well that thing being fuck all. I'm pretty pissed
about this.

I found an awsome one on amazon.co.jp it looks the shit but
I don't think it's out over here yet :(
oh sorry i just looked it up its only 2gb.

I don't get having one any larger, for me i preffer a small
2 gb one! That way you tend to listen to what you put on
there rather than ahving so much you never really know what
to listen to.

anyhow everyone seems to go on about Iriver as the best!

have you tried connecting it directly to the mains?

They only seem to go up to 20gig though.

As for having a shitload of space. For me it just makes
sense. I love having as much music as possible so I can just
grab what I'm in the mood for.
I might start the day fancying listening to Vibert but end
it wanting some Mozart. There's no way I'd know that so
having as much as possible means there's less chance I'll
want to listen to something and not have it.

I'll have to try that at work tomorrow mate, that's where
the plug is.

I don't know why it's there. That's where it is though.

it could be that the battery has died altogether - i bought
a replacement one off ebay for about 6 quid, ipod lasts ages
now

Worth a shot. I've got a feeling it's the hard drive though.
That's been threatening to go for a while. Various
corruptions etc.

For 6quid though it's worth a shot.

If not and iAudio X5 60GB looks pretty sweet. Does
recordings too.

Right, so I've got a fourth generation iPod but it's not a
photo one. eBay is all talking about fourth generation but
only mentioned photo iPods. Christ.

Sounds like the connection unit or the HD is broke.

It might as well be the control unit that's broke... have
you tried to control it with a remote control?

If I was going for something 40 gig, I'd get a Toshiba
Giga-Beat. Ipod's have an average life of around two years,
I wouldn't buy another one. I moved from a 10 gig Ipod to a
20 gig Sony NWA300. It is certainly a better machine,
wihtout some of the hassles of Itunes like not being able to
use an Ipod on multiple computers

You can't use an iPod on multiple computers? Blasphemy!

I'm glad I didn't get one of those. I have one of them
creative zen ones, but it's way too big physically, I wish I
would've thought about that before I bought it. But at $200
for 40 gigs of space, I thought it was a pretty good deal
back when iPods were going for $300-$350 with the exact same
HDD.

iAudio X5 60GB

Bill Burroughs: Looks like it right now. I'll see if a shop
has any in stock so I can get a feel of it before splashing
the cash.

Aesthetics: Well I took it apart this morning when I got
into work and everything seemed connected. I don't have any
sort of remote for it. They removed the remote from the
package for the generation I got. Most strange and quite
annoying really.

entelechy: I'll agree on that. Although I'd probably skip
Sony too as they fuck me off in general. 2 years is a joke
though. I don't pay that sort of money for something like
this and expect that short a life. It's supposed to be
designed for daily use. Nowhere does it officially say 2
years is about average.

LuminousAphid: Size is an issue. That's why the iAudio looks
a good bet. It's the same size as an iPod according to the
product page. That's a good size for me. Not too big and not
too small. Still, 60gig is not enough space really. I want
100 :D That's probably just greedy though.

I've bought a battery off of eBay and I'll see if that
works. I'm tempted to order a 60gig 1.8" hard drive as I
know they work on this generation of iPod. However, that's
about £100 and I don't know if it's the battery or the hard
drive if either of those that's broken. However, I'm already
having mp3 player withdrawal symptoms. There's not enough
memory on my phone either for proper mp3 player action.
Bastard memory cards. I'll have to try and get a 1gig card
for it.
