Windows Vista

I have been using the new windows media player 10 and am
quite impressed. It is generally way less buggy and
smoother. I believe it is the one that will come with the
vista release and I can see many many many mac influences.
It's a really nice change and far more visually appealing. I
have seen beta releases of the os on isohunt.com but don't
dare risk installing it. I was wondering if anyone has the
beta version installed? What's it like? How much better is
it than XP? And, is it basically a mac clone?

no doubt you will need a 64bit processor to handle the full
visuals

I don't want an OS that tries to look 'pretty', with gaudy
special effects. I couldn't give a shit how it looks. I want
it to let me do stuff with the least intervention and
without crashing most of the time.

unfortunately you're not part of the mainstream. the shallow
people of the world. i agree with you though. today i had to
wipe my hard drive for the 4th time in 2 months thanks to
shitty windows programming.

true, and imo it doesn't look pretty at all. it looks kinda
cheesy.
it's trying to emulate the mac design but did it in a cheap
way.
making everything glossy is the new lensflare.

The design of the new graphics I can cope with, but
Microsoft seem to be steering Windows towards a design where
the "non-work" areas (such as the taskbar, titlebars,
scrollbars, menus, etc) are larger, and use up more space
than is needed. I like the old win2000 look where everything
uses a minimal amount of screen area giving a working area
that's pretty efficient.

it. much more robust than sucky xp.

the new aero glass interface is great...

The only reason Microsoft is going down this route is
because of all those designer cunts saying "OSX is so much
nicer and better looking, it's truly better". They've been
forced down this route. I'd rather have the stability ramped
up further and better security but they've instead had to
spend time on a new UI. I'll no doubt have it on full for a
few weeks and then switch to classic once again.

I personally like the idea of updating the ui. There will be
themes, and probably classic modes too (for those who dont
care about graphics). The graphics processing will use the
graphics card too, I think directx will be an integral part
of the OS and all graphics will be done on the GPU instead
of the CPU, so no need to complain about the processing
required for the UI. I have no idea why people are
complaining about the size of scroll and title bars etc.
You've always been able to change the size of these things,
its one of the first things I do when I install windows.
Personally I think the idea of an operating system that can
logon to multiple wireless networks, and share processing
between all processors (CPU, GPU, and probably PPU) is
awesome. I drool at the idea of having a dual-core,
dual-graphics card computer. 4 processors all utilized.
Sounds awesome.

How are the system requirements? Someone told me that if a
computer can hanle XP it can also handle Vista. I find it
hard to believe.

i've read about them but haven't had a chance (read disc
space ;) ) to actually install it. I've also read that in
some cases it's actually a hindrance. I'll find out when I
install. However, it does seems to be a lot of extra stuff I
don't need on this version.

mortso: sort of.... vista ran faster than xp on my (nowadays
somewhat mediocre) setup: p4 3ghz, 1gb ram, 9800xt

just like tnavelerri said... Vista is using the GPU to
handle the sleek Aero interface.... which speed up things...
because you'll have plenty CPU-power for the native
Vista-core.

btw, you can turn Aero off, to save resources.

yes, the overkill security dialogue boxes are a bit
annoying, but from what i've heard they will make it
smoother in the final release.

I got it running aswell.
It is pretty flashy...

Should keep the hardware manufactures happy.
This will mean more people will have a reason to accually
buy faster CPU's and more RAM insted of just gamers.

Alot of things seem to be hidden and changing your IP
address is a good 6 clicks away.. argh!!

But Microsoft Vista is all ready for IP version 6!!
*shudder*
Linux been ipv6 capable for along time though.

Yeh just make a 15-20gb free partition and slap Vista on
it.
It puts a bootloader on the MBR so you can still keep XP.
