Question about Reason

I've been using Reason for a couple of years, but there's
one problem that I've never been able to overcome. Once in a
while, I'll be using a really long sample -- maybe a sample
of a guitar, for instance. For the sample to play, playback
has to begin before the beginning of the sample. If I start
playback in the middle of the sample, it doesn't play.
Seeing as the sample might be a minute long, this can be
really annoying. I'll want to listen to say, just the part
of the song that is played during hte last ten seconds of
the sample, but to hear the sample I've got to listen to the
first fifty seconds, twiddling my thumbs.

I suppose a possible solution might be using recycle to
break the sample into different rex slices, but I think
there's a strict limit on how long rex loops can be. Plus
that's sort of a cumbersome way of doing things. Is there
any way to solve this problem?

unfortunately the only way that you're going to be able to
hear that sample playback as you intend it to is to rewire
Reason into a host DAW (such as Cubase, or Logic, or Digital
Performer) and to have that guitar sample not being
triggered in Reason through one of the samplers, but instead
having it in the DAW as an audio track. that way the DAW
will start playback whereever your Song Position Line is.

Reason in all honesty isn't really meant to be used with
samples that long. (at least in my opinion) Reason was
created from the mindset of "vintage" equipment...in the
sense that most of the modules in the program are based
around older equipment...would you ever have had an Akai
S2000 loaded with a 2 or 3 minutre long sample? not
really....you'd have used your sampler for small
samples...as the name suggests.

i'm sorry i couldn't have helped you find a solution within
Reason, but by rewiring it into something like Cubase then
you'd be on your way to getting the workflow that you want
:)

I split a whole acapella up using Rex and it worked fine.

Just splice it up however you want, then load it into the
NNXT. Then you can trigger each section as you want it:)

ahh so there isn't a restriction on REX file length?
:)

Well I didn't encounter one but that's not to say there
isn't :)

There could be a limit on slices though.

i think it's something like a 99 slice limit....but i don't
ever remember there being a limit on how long those slices
can be

if you're using ReCycle 2 to cut the sample though it'd be
worth making sure that all the parameters are kept to zero
(like the ADSR envelope and so on) else it'll end up fucking
with your sound yeh?

Ive encountered the limit on slice numbers before which is
fucking annoying. When ive had to use long samples I slice
it every 4 bars or something like that, keeps it simple

Ok, guess I was wrong about the rex loop length limit.
Thanks for the help guys
