Ok. I think The Great Destroyer probably was the best album released last year. It's been a while since I've listened to it, but I suddenly "discovered" it on my Pod today, and hoooly shit it's god! I haven't heard any other albums by the band, and since Boomkat are selling their albums now, I want recommendations. I know I can listen to the samples, but still.

I saw these live when I was about 17. Kings of Convenience were supporting, they made everyone sit down. I only really went because my friend was a massive fan, and it was a bit harsh that no one else would go with him.
I thought they were good, although I prefered Kings of Convenience.

i haven't heard Great Destroyer much at all, but its my understanding that its a pretty pronounced departure for the band (relative to what they've been doing for most of their career). for years they have been putting out gorgeous, slow-paced rock lullabies that often verge on ambient music... my personal favourite will always be I Could Live in Hope, but Things We Lost in the Fire also comes highly recommended, and will probably seem like less of an extreme transition from the new one... and the little i've heard of Trust also sounded nice, by the by...

Yeah seen Low twice now. There are some top tracks on the new one but I don't think they quite match the quality of some of the earlier stuff, so check that out for sure, there's a lot of it.
A good starting point would be perhaps Things We Lost in the Fire as dead8 said... Trust is excellent too... the Christmas album is really a must although you might want to wait until its a little more seasonal. Got Curtain Hits the Cast a few months ago and that one's surely more melancholy and slooooooow - quite stereotypically Low (which is a good thing, IMO). I would really recommend the box set they released a couple of years ago - A Lifetime of Temporary Relief - its dirt cheap and has 3 CDs worth of quality Low tracks, a documentary & loads of music videos on DVD. I would probably recommend that as a first port of call if you are really interested, its SUCH good value, I think I got it for about 16 quid when it came out.

Ah! Thanks for feedback. What does "a pretty pronounced departure for the band" mean?

I love the"Curtain hits the cast" album. It's one of those albums that make you question why you bother getting up and go to work in the morning...a bit dangerous. I'm afraid I haven't heard the later albums... I should do.. Lovely band, indeed!

Well they have a reputation for being reaaaally fucking slow and reeeeeeeally fucking quiet. Its a bit of a generalisation now though because they are quite dynamic at times.
I would say something like 'Over the Ocean' or 'Shame' pretty much sums up their 'sound', try and get hold of those two tracks if you can.
Also an interesting thing I found out recently is that 'Walk Into the Sea' from the latest one is supposedly about Elliott Smith.

Since I've just heard their last album, do you recommend me to "work myself backward" through their stuff?

Nah I wouldn't really wanna do that. They haven't really changed too much in terms of quality, or accessability, IMO. They have their own style regardless of 'volume' and I don't think you need to do it chronologically or reverse... I certainly haven't.
Trust (the one before) is a bit of a mixed up one, try first I would say. Its quite... warm (?), and great. Really, I think that would be the best start, either that or the box set.
One thing that isn't so great about the latest album is that Mimi is hardly on it - on the earlier albums she has quite a few solo songs and even in the joint ones her voice is much more prominent in the arrangement. Don't know why they shoved her to the back on the great destroyer.

Anyone heard the live album "One more reason to forget"? I found it at a local record store a few years back, decided to buy it only to find that the people at the store had misplaced the disc and couldn't find it...extremely irritating...
Morsto-x: Try Curtain hits the cast. It's AWESOME!

lots of drum machines and distortion... very weird for Low in a way, but kind of almost a translation of certain things they've always done onto different instruments... i can't tell if i like it or not, yet.
