once i was really pissed, and there was this guy sat begging. he asked for spare change, and i said for some reason i only had a £10 note, and started walking on. then he said he could give me change. i dont know why but i turned round and said he could have like £4. he probably was a junkie, but i dunno, i was fucked. anyway i went to the pub and then found £10 on the floor. karma? i dunno.

there are so many around here you can't possibly help them all. i always feel like shit when saying no because i'm clearly much better off than the beggars and giving them a little money would hardly set me back. when i do give charity i usually buy them a loaf bread and some cans of tuna. they are everywhere, though. hearing "so bietjie geldtjies daar, milanie" about ten times whenever you go out can get quite tedious. sometimes they won't leave you alone and follow you around like hyenas.

Agreed. A standing order with an organisation like "Shelter" is 10 times better than giving the same amount of money direct.
I'll usually offer to buy them food/drink if they want it, but most of them either claim not to be hungry this instant, or appear not to be aware of the adage, "Beggars can't be choosers" and any food you offer them, they claim not to like. Reason being, the vast majority of them (in the UK at least)have some sort of drug addiction (even if that's "only" alcohol) and the money will go on that and they'll just get food out of dumpsters.

I usually just say "Nah, sorry, mate." and shrug. Like redrum said, I will give 'em a ciggie. There seems to be less tramps around Liverpool now, though.
True story: went to Manchester a couple of years back and some rather scruffy looking fella asked me and my mate for money because his "van had broken down." We told him we were skint and he got a bit moody. It was pretty obvious his van story was bollocks.
Anyway, few weeks later I saw the same man on an ITV documentary about the homeless in Manchester!

It was odd how he was doing it for mental health, rather than just the disabled in general, given that he himself was partially blind.
He may have been a scammer, but it was far more entertaining than most and he'd obviously gone to some effort to make the drawings. If he was a scammer, he must have been coining it in: Some people on the donations list had put £5/10!

Give to charities like cygnus said. When people ask me for change to eat, I usually tell them where they can get free food on that day. They usually tell me they don't like to eat there, and would rather go to mcdonalds. I usually tell them "Well I guess your out of luck then.". Generally they would rather have crack than food.

Yes, it's like the notion that insane people are incredibly insightful/touched by the divine. Yes, occassionally one of them comes out with a gem, but most of the time they're talking utter shite. Same goes for the homeless, there's the odd one who is highly intelligent and chooses to live like that due to some philosophical choice, but it's not the case for the vast majority of them.
Giginger: Next time we're out in London, we should take a bucket with BIYC on it round the pubs and collect for "impoverished musicians". :D

I've done it sometimes, but I normally don't have any change in my pockets. Last summer I was sitting in a park, and a woman with a baby came to me and asked me for money because her baby was ill. She looked kinda like a gypsy-version of Paris Hilton. Big golden-looking rings, fancy hairstyle and expensive-looking clothes. I just said no, although I should have asked her to look in the mirror. Probably the richest bum in the world.

I gave $5 to this guy once who stopped me and told me he had to get to Whistler for a job. He started crying showing me he had no track marks on his arms, even though his teeth were all rotten because of Crystal Meth. But he put on a good show and earned his money.
I give them change all the time, I hope they spend it on drugs or booze. It's great being high.

Not many homeless/poor around here. When I do see people like this, I think about giving them something, but I'm not assertive enough to actively do it. I feel quite guilty when I see these people, even though I know many of these people are in these positions for a reason. I'm quite lazy and lethargic but I was born into comfort. Maybe they were too, and blew it... but they probably weren't.
