These uk genre namedroppings that keep popping up everywhere in electronicaland, can someone tell me what it is about?
I can't be bothered googling for this, since you lot prolly are experts anyway!
What is the bpm in dubstep and grime, is there a difference between the lot? Which are the main artists?
thanks you

i was just kidding
listen to pinch - qawalli, it's the ultimate dubstep track and for me it has all the elements of dubstep
it's a sub-sub genre, the subgenre being grime/2step, i think, dub comes from the raggea genre which uses samples for the melodic content or something
i think dubstep is best described as slow drum 'n' bass

dubstep a very easy sound to identify, the bpm is probably around 90, 2 step style drum patterns, lots of spring reverb, various dub type samples and some typical jungle or more electronic samples too, and really low fat pulsing bass. example

88bpm, 2 step kick, with a clap on the 3rd 16th, menacing rolling bass and cheesy high pitched lead.

Yeah, I got it on vinyl, I'll never be able to play it out though, on the rare occasions I get to play a proper set, it's all about electro/house etc, so it's way too slow.....

don't you have a good set-up at home? (i envy you have a vinyl player)
when i say dance music it doesn't mean you actually have to dance, most people in the discotheque don't either, it's the atmosphere that's important. like boomkat says:
Burial's sonic and geographic roots in an anonymous south London location are clearly apparent in the subterranean blues of opener 'Distant lights', affecting the synapses with MDMA singed pads floating over an impossibly slinky 2-step syncopation and luscious diva lick, summoning lost feelings for mid-late 90's rave dystopia.

Are we talking about skream or burial, here? Anyway, there has been a lot of talk about all this dubstep stuff being like the ghost of London's nineties dance music scene coming back to haunt us..I dunno. I like the way burial will mix up refrences like making a 2step beat with photek-style sword clashing samples, or whatever.

Check this out, not out yet but it blatantly will be at some point, being utterly hammered by everyone at the minute. Loefah and Sgt Pokes under their "asbo" alias (haha). Myspace ruins it a bit with the 96k encoding, but if you can play this LOUD and deep then please do so. And wait for the drop about 2:15. Wooaahhhhhhhh
I think the reason a lot of people don't like dubstep (or haven't bothered to dig a bit deeper) is that they haven't really heard it. I mean, the sub is pretty much the focal point of the track, if your speakers aren't putting out that bass weight then you're literally missing a lot of the track. Oh and ceri, it's nowhere near that slow! Try mixing a few tracks with some minimal techno, usually works out between 132 and 140. Gor blimey, give you lot a bit of halfstep and you lose the ability to count :P
Grime is different and the "scenes" as they are actually seem to be separating. Although you do get stuff by people like SNO and MRK1 and that doing great crossover stuff. Grime's bass isn't usually as upfront, you tend to get more harsh synths and helium-vox samples, less "atmosphere" i suppose. Well not less really, just different. Oh yeah, and there's the MCing! Dubstep doesn't really do that, it's just space ape, pokes and crazy d really. Grime sounds like it's got a fucking problem and will mess you up if you look at it wrong, dubstep's more of a friendly thing, you don't tend to get the same aggression.
Rambled enough now, blah blah

That is a very nice 12" and el-b is an excellent music man dude. Have you heard any of the ghost stuff biggles? El-b's tracks with J Da Flex, ace if you like the 2-step side of things. Gemini project and artwork are well worth checking too, and groove chronicles, although they can go a bit too cheese for my liking. There was a wicked 12" released last month as well, "can't wait" by a guy called johnny dark... borrows from that garagey sound but all crispy and mechanical-sounding, nice and cold and funky and stuff. Really fucking good, i think they've got samples up at bleep.
