the flac format

made me think about the influence of quality on my musical
perception.

actually - after downloading a few albums of autechre in
flac format - i realised that i now like some tracks more
then i did before and some tracks less.

for example - the whole untilted sounds 1000 times better on
flac then on mp3 - the bass suddenlt makes sense - all the
bits and pieces start to live. even fermium, which was my
least favourite kind of got better.

the same with pen expers - the track suddenly got so deep
and raw that it punches me into my chair!

on the other hand - gantz graf started to suck in flac. oh
my god - one of the most important and best electronic track
in the world got much to raw.

the beginning is now terribly sloppy and got so much edges
and sharpness. in mp3 it got more mild and soft - i liked
that one better!

i'm curious how other improvements of the quality would
influence me, like better monitors, better soundcard and so
on.

made me kinda scared !

i have to admit that this convinced me really to buy orignal
albums.

untilted is on my list - and all richard devine albums too -
i'm afraid how good they will sound

CD's sound like shit nowadays anyway, they're mastered too
loud and compressed too much.

maybe you're right - but on the other it seems like cd's
will be the only right format for a some time.

i'm curious why the super audio cd idea was dropped. i
listened to some pearl jam concert (or some other rock band)
in a professional studio in surround and i was blewn away
completely

his next release is meant to be a 5.1 surround cd on
schematic. no further info here...

he said it in a interview shortly after the release of
cautella.

he somehow disappeared now so i hope he is working on it.

on the other hand - i just realised that the schematic label
site hasn't beed updated since march and there were now
further releases on it... maybe they have financial
problems.

i hope they won't go down because imho this is one of the
most interesting labels lately.

and i doubt that hymen would release his dvd

it?

appreciate it 100% on a shitty recording.

True... good vinyl on a good player kicks CDs asses
anytime...

FLAC is pretty sweet I agree, I only really heard stuff in
FLAC like live bootlegged shows and such.... thats where its
best. Uncompressed audio is great. Big files ofcourse..

Vinyl is my favourite... and nearly at a tie just because of
sheer coolness is 5.1 Dualdisc or SACDs.... fuckin 5.1
surround sound (on my 7.1 system!) sounds wonderful.... I
love the NIN stuff in surround sound... so lush and
wonderful! Just fuckin amazing truly.... if you havent heard
surround sound authored audio DVDs or SACDS I highly
reccomend it. A truly great experience.

Digital is never as good as analog for sound just because
the process of digitizing music takes out certain "peaks and
valleys" of the actual sound wave, even at the highest end
(flac level 8) of digital encoding at this time..... thats
why vinyl is awesome is because the needle is travelling
over an exact replica of the original sound wave imprinted
on the wax.. heh....

With mp3 you can also tweak it a bit if you, for instance,
prefer frequency cutoff to ringing artifacts. The presets
are for a broad range of music and don't have to be optimal
for everything.

I've also noticed I liked certain music a lot more as mp3
than in flac form. I had the same thing with music recorded
to audiotape which I liked much more that the CD version.
Audio"quality" is very subjective and some music just sounds
much more pleasant in low quality.

i still don't get the whole vinyl-hype thing. i have a few
dozen 12 inches including apparat, aphex, autechre and i
still cannot say that vinyl is better in any case then
digital recording.

i mean - how could it - the same material is pressed on cd
and vinyl the same way - there is no additional mastering or
anything.

so the thing that is on vinyl is exactly the same as cd.

on the other hand - vinyl is getting dirty, it gets
scratches - it's a bitch to take care of. and there are to
many things that influence the sound - the stylus, the
turntable, dust, the preamp/mixer.

i agree. although in theory analog will always be better,
there are so many things in practice which influence
quality. so much more than in the digital world. vinyl has
the potential to sound better, but in practice it rarely
does. it's probably the burning fire in the background which
makes it more cozier. nostalgia is a powerful tool

Ogg vorbis might be a good compromise: it has much more
transparant audioquality than mp3 and it isn't as big as
FLAC.

Ogg Vorbis at Q6 (+/-192 kbs) sounds excellent to the point
where I can no longer tell the difference with lossless in
99% of music, and when there is a difference, it isn't as
annoying like mp3 sometimes is.

That's only partially correct.

On the CD it's converted into a load of 0s and 1s and a
compressed frequency range.

If its a good record player and a good record then it is
quite clearly the higher quality choice.

There is a huge difference, like when I said... when its
converted into digital formats certain parts of the actual
audio gets cut out, its just the natural process, a record
is the exact copy of the actual sound waves into an actual
medium such as the vinyl record its self... ofcourse it can
get dirty and stuff, its how you keep it clean and all that
.... thats what matters.

Vinyl hype? Its been around for a while now me thinks hehe..
a long while, its just nicer, bigger pictures and notes,
bigger piece of music I guess.... and yeah if its good stuff
it can sound better, you get a better seperation of sounds
with it.

not only the quality of the rip

lots of difference and it is indeed mastered differently;
there's one master for cd and one for vinyl. cd can't handle
the amount of information required to reproduce the vinyl
sound, so they cut what they think you won't notice being
cut.

I wouldn't say that vinyl is objectively "better" but it
does have a certain character that the CD format doesn't
have. I'm not talking about liking it for being lo-fi or
building up imperfections or any other indie-head retro shit
like that, I'm talking about how the bass sound hits you in
a certain way, or the chunkiness of it or whatever, you know
that nice qaulity well mastered new records have.

actually it's the other way around!

when mastering for vinyl pressing you have to filter out the
deepest bass and the highest highs. also vinyl records cant
handle hard L/R pan of low frequencies so they have to be in
the middle. also, the dynamic range of vinyl records is much
less than on digital audio. and there also differences in
the quality of pressing and materials and formats also have
differences -> 12" 45pm should be the most hi-fi, 33rpm 7"
most lo-fi.

with cd it's simpler: whatever you can do within 44khz 16bit
stereo audio it's possible to press on audio cd, even if
your stereo can't play it properly...

not commenting on which format is better.

that's probably why it's got dropped. Not enough people can
listen to SACD's in a professional studio. And you need
decent equipment to even appreciate it.
