- beware, this is extremely shocking (07/08/05) there's a petition on that page for maximum jale sentence. i think it's still valid as they haven't been sentenced yet p.s. probably lots of you know about this already etc.. but i hadn't seen the video so i assumed that some may have not seen it either. |

I'm guessing the guy with the letters on the back of his sweater was the knife wielder as he's making stabbing motions at the victim with the white sweater. However, if I get stabbed that many times wearing a white sweater wouldn't it have turned red with blood in an instant? Was the vid real or a dramatized reconstruction of said incident? Also, do you guys really have these surveillance cameras that are constantly watched by people who control them by joysticks? Apparently it's necessary though they're always gonna be too late to save people with it anyway so it's always gonna be purely courtroom material. Anyway if it's real, the knife wielding killer should get the death penalty, the other two henchmen a long period of jailtime. |

It's not fair for the public and the media to influence a trial before it's had chance to enter the court of law. I'm obviously against murder, but just because there is a petition to give someone maximum jail sentence, doesn't make it the right thing to do. This case deserves a full, unbiased court hearing, just like every other case. I refuse to read this article though if it is by the sun. This "newspaper" is biased and full of shit. I agree with SValx that a case should be impartial to the pressures of the press. What I don't have a problem with, however, is the Sun citing this case as reason to change the sentencing for knife crimes in general. Knifing is awful and it's getting a bit like Spain in many places in the UK; scum carry a knife as a matter of course and have few qualms about using them. It's a tricky one though; you can't just ban carrying knives completely, or even penalise people for having them. There are plenty of situations where I carry a knife or screwdriver for perfectly legitimate reasons and there are jobs where it'd be impractical not to. |

the sun is a newspaper not some legal or political instance! at least they shouldn't be.. no newspaper should; they should all just report the news, not carry out judgement and make ethical statements about various things.. it's like fucking fox news or whatever that murdoch characters network is called! also, the sun isn't calling for changing the sentencing of knife violence, they're just calling for these people to get the highest possible sentence. I've had this idea for a while about making a newspaper or newspaper addition thing called something like "Facts." wherein the only things reported are the particular facts about whatever situation is being reported and in cases where it would be required a guide to interpreting or reading data (like a graph of something or a national budget) for people who don't necessarily already know how to. The use of colouring words ("awful," "tragedy," etc) would be excluded from this newspaper. The articles wouldn't be written by reporters, but rather by people who actually know what they're talking about; people with an education in whatever the report is about. Of course, there'd be some kind of quality control making sure that particular researchers paradigm didn't colour the article, but I also realise that a completely uncoloured presentation of anything at all would be quite impossible. I think I may have to do something about this idea soon... |

I don't think it's really fair to call the mainstream people idiots. they're just uninformed because of the shit quality of news. also, I said it would be a newspaper or newspaper addition.. I realise it'd be too hard to present data for every days news, but I think it could be a nice addition at, like, the end of the week, and it would be included inside another newspaper, like with those magazine-ish thingies that just report silly fashion stuff... it would be a quite too dry newspaper to stand on its own, but when it is something "extra," I think people would read it. This is also a compromise (no thing is 100%) as I'd really like for it to be independent of anything else, but I also realise that to reach more people it'd most likely have to be either a free newspaper (but I hate ads) or a part of another. In that case, it would of course be the one that's already closest to what I've sketched. |
