How big is the difference between Russian and Ukrainian? Are they two different languages or more like different dialects? Do you understand each other perfectly?

the difference is not very big if you know both languages. Russians who don't know ukrainian understand about 50% of words they see on ads and elsewhere, laughing at the rest, cause rest sounds funny - sometimes resembles smth bad in russian.
a well known joke here on this topic is "Nehay Shchastyt!" written in Kiev airport, meaning "good luck!" in Ukrainian, but resembles russki mat phrase "Nehuy shastat!", meaning roughly "get your ass outta here".
i speak Russian better than Ukrainian.

if "nehuy" has amething in common with Polish "chuj" than it's quite a serious curse word. I'm not trying to justify her behaviour.
