I really like SW. It was a significant part of my childhood.
My problem is that the new episodes turned into a
giga-commercialistic style. Why Lucas does need to put
boyband characters into the movie and waste celluloid on
stupid love scenes?
The answer is money.

I have never understood the whole Star Wars phenominon. The
Space Western Idea was great but, I don't think it had legs
to do six parts. Empire is still the best by far and one of
the rare examples of a sequal out shining the original.

The original idea for Star Wars was allways to have been a
six part story. I personally cannot wait for Episode II.

As tunemx says, Star Wars was definately a significant part
of my childhood as well, and I still love it. And I think
that no matter what Episode II and III actually turn out to
be like, true fans like myself will just accept that as
'what happened' before the original trilogy.

The Empire Strikes Back is to date my favourite!

The problem as to commericalism, is that nowadays, unlike in
the 70s and 80s, the hype that surrounds films such as these
does tend to be a bit overdone. Take for example the Harry
Potter film, I've seen the film, it was allright, but not
great, but everywhere you go there's Harry Potter this, and
Harry Potter that! You see it on TV here now with Monsters
Inc., the electric company PowerGen promoting them,
McDonalds...the list goes on! Same with Lord of the Rings
(great film!!), I went into a bookstore in Bristol last
week, and as soon as you walk in LORD OF THE RINGS
everything!! I think it's something that we have to accept.
I can picture it now, all the merchandise for this years new
films....Star Wars, Spiderman, Scooby Doo and Matrix 2.

The merchandise is a seperate issue, things to help sell the
movie. However I think no matter what you think of Star
Wars, Episode II will be a sucess, because it is Star Wars
and people will go to see it!

And as to the people who make these films, if they can make
even more money by cashing in the merchandise, then good on
them! If you're on to a good thing, good luck to you - and
that applies to anything!

Anyway, thats enough about what I think!
*goes off to reserve some EPII merchandise from the net*
;-)

The first Star Wars wasn't commercialized? Yeah right. Maybe
not at the very beginning, but it didn't take very long for
the marketing machine to kick in.

Why did Goerge Lucas use established actors for Part I. The
cool part about Star Wars was they were all relitivly
unkown. Liam Neeson, Ewan McGreger PLEASE

I am not meaning the stupid merchandise...

I am talking about the cast, the story, everything.
That is maybe more heavily commercialized, than merchandise
and shit.

Weren't there suppposed to be nine episodes originally?

Also, why are there two "far"s in "a galaxy far, far away"?

because lucas never wrote a story for ep7-8-9. he'd have to
begin from scratch. also it takes him about 10 years to do
each trilogy. why two "far"s? just to make us think it's
really far, far away :P

That curved light saber looks crap.

How come there are more varieties of light saber in the
prequel? Did technology actually regress in this galaxy
far, far away? Or did people just realise that the other
sorts of light sabers were just form over function, and so
phased them out?

offline 010101 from Vancouver (Canada) on 2002-03-06 19:38 [#00114560]
Points: 7669 Status: Regular

I guess it is like the evolution of the Samuri sword. They
found the finest design through a process of illimination.
If light sabers had an extending function you coul just
point it a someone and, hey presto, energy wepon shish
kabab.

offline AlbertoBalsalm from Reykjavík (Iceland) on 2002-03-06 19:39 [#00114562]
Points: 9459 Status: Lurker

you have to remember that in the old trilogy there weren't
many lightsabers around because all the jedi had been wiped
out. there were only 3 people who used them.
