yeah they are. anyone with flanged out spacey delayed guitars and tons of FX on everything is more or less shoegazer.
cocteau twins, MBV, ultra vivid scene (sorta, dog_belch would be the one to confirm or deny that claim..)
there's also alot of good underrated shoegazer music out there like Orange and Elysium.

I still rate a lot of the bands from that time that may have stylistically had some elements of shoegazing (read Velvet Underground influence) but weren't quite so easy to place, Pale Saints, Ultra Vivid Scene as Uviol mentions, Loop, Spacemen 3, and a lot of others consigned to just being mentioned on badly designed websites and hoarded by virtual p2p collector scum who sit on the rare 7" and bootleg rips which would have been rarer than hen's teeth "back in the day" but that's progress.
Chapterhouse are still a joke, though.

shoegaze has to be one of the worst terms ever invented by a journalist.
i do still listen to a number of records and bands from that era, "raise" by swervedriver might be my favorite. it's also my #1 "criminally out-of-print" album. another gem: "everything's alright forever" by the boo radleys.

they were much maligned (after all, shoegaze is a pejorative term) back in the day, called a mbv ripoff etc, but now it's cool to like them. it's nice to see the tunes have stood the test of time.
your shoegaze stars list left a bit to be desired...

This My Bloody Valentine release noone seems to know (apart from you Dog Belch). Its amazing. Its like an add-on to Loveless, and I recommend it very very much. It has interludes between the tracks which are as amazing as the songs (and clearly are hte inspiration for a lot of Boards of Canada interludey moments)

Honey Power is such an awesome track on that ep. But yeah, I think when people mention a link between MBV and BOC I agree with what Clint says, more than any guitary element or citing Loveless as an influence.

Yeah, fans will know it, I guess, but its not really talked about anywhere near as much as the albums, it seems. Even though its as good as either (albeit shorter). How stupid that their best stuff is outta print... It took me a while to stumble across it a few months back, but its been on constant rotation since.
I had the MP3s of Glider a while back but I'll need to get the CD somehow. There were some top ones on that, although I really think the instrumental bits on Tremolo add sparkle to the release as a whole.

i agree absolutely about the interludes, they add a lot of atmosphere and set the tracks off perfectly. i was actually a little disappointed with loveless when it first came out, since the "tremolo" ep raised the bar so high. this is the second time in a couple of days when i'll have the opportunity to say "criminally out of print."
whatever happened to that mbv box set that was supposed to have tracks from an unreleased album?

What about the influnce of Dinosaur Jr? Kevin Sheilds once said that his favorite guitarists were Jimi Hendrix and J. Mascis. You can definately hear it, although Dino were a little bit more "classic rock" put through a punk mangle whereas MBV were less "riffy".
