MBV were a fucking no-hoper goth band until Kevin Shields
took control of them. Seen them twice. You made me realise
had to be heard to be believed. So don't fucking try and
talk to me about MBV.

forgot to mention the red Red House Painters self-titled
album... its necessary to specify because there are two
different self-titled ones... this is the earlier one.

was listening to Pale Saints the other day, very good stuff,
i'm sorry i didn't hear it earlier.

way to go 4AD.

Just listening to Ride's 1990 album "Nowhere". What's
original and great about it is the fact they're not really
technically good musicians, and Andy Bell is a pretty weak
singer, but they still aspire to these great big epic songs.
Sometimes the album even verges on prog! It's like
psychedelia ambition with punk rock "skills". And I don't
really even listen to much guitar music anymore.

have you heard their early records, when they had a totally
different singer? maybe they even had two before kevin
shields, can't remember. i thought they were more a sort of
stylized rockabilly sort of band, though.

i've got a ton of unreleased slowdive material, but the
sound quality is unlistenably poor, like a cassette that was
copied three or four times. maybe a notch or two worse than
the pygmalion demos.

has anyone heard locust's remix of "shine"? that's worth
seeking out, it was used on a soundtrack for a film called
"splendor" i think...

Hot Band of the Moment, asobi seksu, are rawesome shoegaze.
i prefer their self-titled album to citrus as i find it's
louder and catchier. 'sooner' is a terrific song.

this thread needs more pale saints
"the comforts of madness" is the best album of it's era by a
mile
also slowdive ripped off their sound from the kitchens of
distinction
check out "the 3rd time we opened the capsule" / "quick as
rainbows" / "
elephantine"....ride's nowhere was a let down after the 1st
3 eps

also edsel auctioneer pissed on everybody with the gutted ep
(91?)

and LOOP totally own spacemen3

that is all

I saw Kitchens of Distinction live about 1,000,000 times.
Great band. I did think, some years later, they owed a
little bit to The Chameleons.

I remembered The Telescopes the other day, are they in this
thread? I'm not looking. "Perfect Needle"... "SHC Burn"
lovely.

Totally agree about Loop. Spacemen 3 a bunch of druggy
throwbacks, Loop.. monolithic slave lords of the fucking
epic riff. Awesome.

i love pale saints, but they went completely downhill after
ian masters quit. they also got slagged for sounding too
much like the boo radleys. i think the boo radleys
"everything's alright forever" is one of the best of that
era, along with "comforts of madness."

slowdive ripped off kitchens of distinction? i don't think
so, and dog_belch is absolutely right that kod owes a debt
to the chameleons. but at least you didn't pull out that
hoary criticism about slowdive ripping off my bloody
valentine. you can see where slowdive's sound evolved from
the sarah records single "breathe," recorded under the name
eternal (wasn't the complete slowdive lineup btw).

i pulled out some loop a few weeks back, it sounds pretty
dated and cheesy to me at this point. spacemen 3's cover of
mudhoney's "when tomorrow hits" still sounds massive. to
each their own...

What Loop did you air? To be fair the first two albums sound
a bit sparse now, I think they were more punishing live at
the time (I saw them a few times from "Fade Out" until they
actually did fade out), but the last album "Gilded Eternity"
sounds more... robust. At their final gig, when they were
playing, I believe "From Centre to Wave", one of the guitars
got unplugged, whoever was playing the more flangy stuff
over the top, and it was just down to the more rhythmical
elements... and it sounded like the best bit of futuristic
rock ever perfomed. Then back in came the flanging and off
you go.

i've tried out the first two Pale Saints albums recently and
i think i actually prefer In Ribbons.
in fairness i think its because i'm looking for a very
specific sort of mood/feel and Comforts seems a lot more
diverse/difficult to pigeonhole... i should probably try
again a couple months down the line... as it stands though,
Shell is my jam...

this thread rules, by the by... keep 'em coming.

fucking hell! i completely forgot about about "a gilded
eternity," and i would have said that's their best record.
that one has definitely stood the test of time. the track i
spun was "soundhead," maybe i was too harsh, it's ok.

spraydog

if you like the lofi mbv/early telescopes sound check the
track "peardrops" by this band, it's great, sticks in your
head. low quality mp3, tho.

i still like moose as well, their first three singles still
sound great, also criminally out of print.

i just spun a couple telescopes singles too, "everso" and
"celeste", both still sound great. i think their first
album was recently reissued.

also worth checking out, a.r.kane's first 3 or four singles
and their first album.

a.r. kane are a band I've been meaning to check out for
roughly the past 20 years. I always think it's wise to hold
some bands in reserve for fallow periods (like now, to be
honest). I've only got one Rudy Tambala remix of Bark
Psychosis' "Big Shot".

Bark Psychosis I don't suppose come under this thread but
I'll mention them. And Disco Inferno.

"Everso", I forgot about that one, that was great. The
second album didn't they thoroughly lose it and go mellow
jazz, if I recall. They came back a couple of years ago I
believe.

Moose, I remember then name but I can't remember a single
track, I'll need to rejog the memeroid (which is like a
hemorroid, but my brain).

Spraydog I will look into.

What about Levitation? Again not shoegazery... more.. I
don't know.. indie prog? "World Around", "Smile",.. good
tracks, fun times.

for moose, check the "cool breeze," "reprise" and "jack"
ep's.

levitation, terry bickers' band after he left house of love.
i've still got a few of their releases. they did a few tunes
with a shoegazery feel but yeah i'd say indie prog fits the
bill. terry bickers did an amazing cover of the velvet
underground's "i'm set free," worth tracking down.

the first couple bark psychosis singles were great.

i'd recommend catherine wheel's first album to anyone
interested in this stuff, too.

play the track "aruca" by medicine at top volume, it sounds
like a mbv-fuelled sandblaster.

i do remember the telescopes second album, it was on
creation but was as i recall totally unmemorable. still in
a rock vein but low key and generic, totally disappointing.
haven't heard it since 1995, though.

somebody's got to mention a shoegaze era band that sucked,
so let me add the drop nineteens to that list. there was a
brief heyday where a couple of unworthy imitators got
signed, and they were one of them.

ok time to get back to work...

Debut albums by the two Tchek shoegaze bands The Naked Souls
and Ecstacy Of St. Theresa are spinning frequently over at
my house at the moment. I've been looking for those albums
for years and then: Oink!

Brilliant stuff!

Ha...I remember this.

Was just listening to Souvlaki yesterday, funnily enough. Is
that shoegaze? Post shoegaze? I played my mate the first
Lush album recently and he was really surprised that it was
actually good, 'cause their later britpop stuff was total
shite.

There's a great cover of Ride's "Vapor Trail" by an American
group called Trespassers William that's on my Winamp
playlist a lot now too.

Lush degenerated badly towards the end, I even think one of
the bandmembers hangded himself... But Gala and Spooky are
both great albums IMO.

I dl'ed 4ad act Swallow's 1992 album "Blow" the other day.
It sounds like a cross between My Bloody Valentine and
Cocteau Twins with bits and pieces of Lush and even Jesus
and the Mary Chain thrown in. Nice...

let me take a moment to recommend blonde redhead's album
"23," which has some fantastic songs and production.

swallow were hampered by weak vocals, but if you like the
cocteau twins you might like them. i wish i could locate
(um cheaply) a copy of their remix album that had some of
their album tracks redone as instrumentals (called
"blowback").

i never thought i'd see a shoegaze renaissance...

Now, does anyone have the fantastic Lughnasa album by a band

released another album called earth loop, but I have never
heard that one. I used to own Lughnasa and I miss it so
