Oh man I can't wait. I wonder what the theme/time
period/location is. Shouldn't be long before we get to see
some screens.

Also, Halo 3 trailer at Bungie.net. I'm downloading it now.

I see that makes perfect sense. The wii controller just has
left a bad taste in my mouth. I suppose over time it might
settle in but i really enjoy disliking nintendo even though
i grew up a mighty big fan of it!

I dunno, I would say the only real surprise or big ''news''
with regards to the ''console war'' is GTA on Xbox. Bad news
for Sony. Other than that, the conferences were extremely
predictable... Sony blew it like they always do, Nintendo
trotted out Mario, Zelda and Metroid like they always do,
and Microsoft is all about Halo, like they always are. The
only announcement that made me go ''whoa'' was GTA, that
franchise is the most signifigant asset and now it's a
polygamist. Even though it doesn't even really matter to me
at all since I'm getting both of those systems and I don't
give a shit anyway, it's still the biggest surprise and the
IGN boards are already rife with X-Bots trolling the PS3
boards bragging about it. Gotta love gamers, always focusing
on what's important.

I don't know, I think these large press conferences are
possibly the least interesting aspect of the E3 (well,
besides the booth babes perhaps) - like Ophecks says, it's
always the big names, the big sequels, blah blah blah.

when you get all excited over GTA coming out on Xbox I just
go "hey, it's now on the other big console" and "hey, it's a
sequel to GTA, unsurprisingly".

I hope there will be some stranger more interesting but
above all NEW games, being developed by smaller developers,
bobbing up on game journalism sites soon.

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2006-05-09 16:38 [#01895785]
Points: 19190 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

Yeah the press conferences are just macho posturing, pimping
the AAA franchises that pay the bills. Especially in Sony
and Microsoft's case, the Katamari Damacys/Guitar
Hero/ICOs/weirder little games get ignored. They shove the
big franchises down our throat.

But by the same token, a lot of these repeated franchises
get repeated for a reason. Mario /Metroid/etc always break
new ground every gen. And a big part of MGS4's appeal is
that it's ''yet another sequel''. People actually care about
MGS's story and characters, and it's never a rehash.

The Halo trailer looked typically boring though, that series
has no grasp of the artistic side of things. Halo 3 WILL be
more of the same.

i'm glad Nintendo is pwning everyone. Even without Wii they
could still make Sony and Microshit eat their own balls with
just the DS.

The thing about Sony and Microshat is that THEY JUST REHASH
THE SAME BORING SHIT ONLY WITH BETTER GRAPHICS.

When the playstation1 came out there was no fucking way i
was buying that piece of shit. A 2x speed cd rom drive with
a controller popping out its ass? No thank you fuckers.

Xbox? WOW you mean now I can drop an extra $300 on top of
the $800 i already spent buying a computer that performs
just as good if not better than an xbox? Where do I sign up
for the anal wrecking ball?

The only reason Sony is still in the game is because they
have really good 3rd party developers making decent shit.
The only reason I bought PS2 was because I thought i'd be
using it online. 4 years later I realize that not one
fucking game I own has online capability and the new Final
Fantasy's can suck my fucking cock. Nothing but girly
prepubescent anime bullshit.

I honestly feel like the only reason these consoles are
selling is because:

1. Status symbol. Maxim said it was cool so i bought two of
them.

2. No fucking clue. 30 year old washed up fag tries to be
'techy' and 'cool'. Thinks mario is for kiddies.

3. I'm rich. I have so much fucking money I buy every
console ever.

4. One of the above losers sold me theirs at a discount
price. It'll be on ebay when I'm bored with it.

assuming you're not joking), you're like one those Wii
martyrs on IGN, but with even more inexplicable bitterness.

Dpending on my mood, I sort of agree about Microsoft,
they're very devious and the worst offenders when it comes
to generic software and crass media manipulation. Here's the
raison d'etre of the Xbox 360. Nothing to do with the
ignorant gobbledygook you listed. Jeezus. It's basically a
specialized PC. It would be very expensive to buy an actual
PC that can run Oblivion at 1920 x 1080 at high framerates,
HDR and AA. But the Xbox 360 does it now for a fraction of
the price of a great gaming PC. Just about every PC game
worth having will end up on Xbox 360 (or PS3), and gaming
feels better with a home theater than it does at a desk.
That, along with Live, is the reason why so why people buy
it. Nothing to do with image, just function. It's not rocket
science, and it's not about ''image''.

(and it's also about Halo... most people I know bought an
Xbox 1 to play multi-player Halo. I initially did, myself.
Fun party game, well worth the buying an Xbox for. What does
that have to do with image and Maxim or whatever silliness
you were talking about?)

If you think there's nothing original in Sony's library,
well, I don't know what to say. Personally, when I look at
Zelda and then at ICO, Metroid Prime and then Shadow of the
Colossus, Super Mario Sunshine and then Ratchet and Clank,
it's pretty clear to me Sony has been holding their own,
artistically. Then there's 3rd party stuff. There's lots of
Katamaris and Guitar Heroes and Rezes and other obscuros,
you didn't look hard enough if you think the PS2 doesn't
have a ton of original games.

It's naive to think that Sony's success has nothing to do
with its game library. Especially considering the hardware
is ghetto.

That's not entirely accurate, but paucity of truth seems to
be a common theme here. Just for reference, on Gamespot,
they gauge the popularity and hype for previewed E3 games
and update it every hour based on web traffic. The PS3 holds
8 of the top 10 spots, the Xbox 360 holds 1 (Halo, of
course). The DS has the other.

I mean, if you don't like MGS, Halo, Grand Theft Auto or
Final Fantasy, cool, but don't kid yourself here. These are
the games to beat. Sony and Microsoft are in good positions,
as is Nintendo. This will probably be the closet console
grudge match since Sega/Nintendo in 93/94.

Curb- i love videogames

Yeah. So do I. I think I'm masochist when it comes to
gaming, though. Getting some insightful gaming discussion
going on the internet is like getting blood from a stone
sometimes. It's often rough going but I sure do love console
wars anyway. It's not enough for EVERY console to be worth
owning, one or two of them always have to suck. At least it
seems graphic-whores are on the decline.

Anyway, on the bright side of things, there's a new
full-length 15 minute Metal Gear trailer being posted by
Konami later today. It blew the roof off the joint at E3
last night, it's supposed to be super-deluxe. I'm pretty
hard.

your number 1 reason now completely goes for the Wii, a
renaming that blatantly has "MARKETING DEPARTMENT" scribbled
all over it - let's make it look a bit like an iPod, try to
get that crowd of hipster wannabees in there too..

you should choose a console based on the games that are
available for that console and whether you want to play
those games- if you like the games for the PSP, you get a
PSP, if you like the look of the DS games, you get a DS. not
out of some dumb form of fanboism.

I've now watched the Sony and the Nintendo press
conferences, and there's just way too much to account for...
Luckily I don't have to, since it's all out there on
countless sites!

Wii (I'm loving the name, btw, it's a real hit, "pika-pika"
japanese crazy style) seems exciting enough, and if it's
going to end on the economical side of the market, I might
as well buy it. There's a few good reasons: 1) Mario
Galaxies, 2) Mario Galaxies, 3) Zelda: Twilight Princess, 4)
the rest is bonus!

To be frank, Zelda didn't seem altogether mind-blowing,
compared to what Gamecube already does, but as an integrated
experience I'm sure it'll deliver.

The hyper-excited kids playing baseball and ping pong in
their living rooms did not resonate with me, but maybe I'm
not in their target trendy audience. The discussion here is
on the right track: It's definitely no less an appeal to
youth trendiness in Nintendo, than it is in MS, or Sony.
Luckily Miyamato-san will deliver gold no matter who's
buying it.

The little we saw of the new Mario, I can say it's going to
be a worthy continuation of the series. I still consider
Mario 64 as possibly the greatest game of all time, and
Sunshine was cute enough too, so I have high hopes time time
around as well.

Last complaint: To say (second year in a row, I can
testify!) that "it's no longer a matter of the quality of
graphics, but rather the quality of content" is a clumsily
concealed way of saying that Nintendo is unable to provide
groundbreaking hardware for developers or gamers. Looking at
the Sports party game they had to offer, one thing seems
clear - "dazzling" is not the word to describe the level of
their graphical offering...

Sony, on the other hand, provided just that: DAZZLING
graphical demonstration. No matter what you think of some of
their rehashed demos from last year, it's clear to me that
they are WAY ahead of the race as far as pure processor
power is concerned.

I'm looking forward to the longer MGS demo, so I'll skip
that for now... FFXIII, too, seems too early to say anything
about.

GT HD was quite sweet. Tokyo track was a bit boring, since
it's the same lifeless track from GT3 and 4 (was it in GT2
already?). They haven't updated the dynamics or the
interactive elements of the backgrounds at all, it seems,
which makes for a poor show of what the machine is capable
of. To be fair, it's not a demo for a NEW game, but rather a
simple re-vamping of old content with new resolution and
frame rate. That said, the "Grand Canyon" stage seemed
absolutely remarkable! Not only the jaw-dropping background
(in fine detail), but the faultless, smooth, streamlined
vehicle models in beautiful close-ups really gave a glimpse
into the future of the series.

Still, certain factors NEED to be introduced to the series:

1) Interactive and embellishing elements to the stages -
including people (not mere carton figures), birds, LIVELY
trees and plants, wind, water, rain, thunder, geological
formations etc.

2) A.I.! Please - these drivers would totally flunk the
Turing test. If it drives like a robot, and slides like a
robot - it's a robot...

3) Realistic collision detection - including harder
punishments for hitting walls, grass, gravel and other
cars.

4) Finally - one can always dream - the ability to wreck
your car/bike.

The rest of the games seemed quite exciting too. Nobody's
talking about Afrika, that could rule. Plenty of teasers,
but enough of live performances as well... These seemed
particularly exciting: Medal of Honour, Resistance: Fall of
Man, 8 Days (or was it 9?), the untitled Naughty Dog game,
and Warhawk (hell yes!).

Last, but definitely not least, Heavenly Swords blew me
away, for what easily could've been mistaken for
pre-rendered goodness in last year's E3 was now proven 100%
to be actual gameplay. Well, sort of - plenty of the moves
seemed quite scripted, in the vein of Shenmue. This is no
Shenmue though. If anything, in the worst case scenario, it
could be "The Bouncer" of PS3's launch (anybody remember
that PS2 showcase?): a semi-worthless game with the sole
purpose of showing what the machine is capable of before
launch. But it didn't seem too bad at all, this Heavenly
Sword. Entertaining as hell, methinks.

In fact, so many of the PS3 games seemed faultlessly smooth
and pretty, that it's safe to say a new era of gaming is
dawning on us. Sure, thank Nintendo for innovating yet again
in gaming interfaces and content. Sure, give X-Box its' due
for introducing hi-def gaming and hard drives in our
livingrooms. But the only system that makes my skin itch, my
hands shake and my heart race - and, occasionally, my blood
boil - is PS3.

Now, if only the price game down a bit. :(

Ophecks and Qrter I love you both.

about the xbox:

It's basically a
specialized PC.

Yep, I couldn't have said it better. Thats all it is and
just like any PC it will be obsolete in 6 months. Why just
not upgrade your current computer and use that $400+ for a
new video card or cpu and then you can play oblivion as well
as half life 2, etc... And lets not forget the other
features of your current desktop like: downloading pr0n,
browsing the internet, keyboard + mouse (superior gaming
control), high resolution monitor (as opposed to most tv's),
massive file storage, music/mp3 workstation/stereo, etc etc
etc.

And shit! If you have a laptop you can bring that fucker
anywhere. Lets see the xbox try and go portable.

Yes I know xbox can hold mp3s and crap but now you have to
spend more time and effort transfering them to the tiny 20
gig harddrive. And if you didn't get the removable harddrive
version you're kinda fucked if you plan on putting more than
14 gigs of shit on your xbox.

Another fantastic idea from microsoft: "Xbox Live Silver is
free of charge and allows users to create a profile, join on
message boards, access Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, and
talk to other members. Silver members are not allowed to
play any games online."

OH GOOD, I've always wanted to pay a subscription to play
online. Can't blame microsoft though. Even selling their
premium system for $525 still doesn't make up for
manufacturing costs of the system so they gotta make up for
that lost cash somehow.

The only good thing is the 3.2 mghz processor. whoopeee. I
can go buy a 3.4 if I really felt insecure about my penis
size.

I'm not saying its about image, or marketing hype, or the
cheesy names or whatever. I was just saying that there are a
vast majority of gamers out there who just buy shit for one
of my 4 reasons. Most people here (on xlt) do not fit into
those categories at all.

If you really have a boner for a certain game, then go get
it if you really think its worth half a grand. Otherwise the
rest of us can utilize some self control and wait for any
xbox title to come out on PC. Also, I did forget to mention
that xbox has a really crappy selection of games right now
so another reason to wait on buying one.

I did say that the Pstation has some great games. Thats why
I bought one. Ico, Shadow of C, etc are all amazingly
mindblowing but its just that the PS2 as a console didn't
live up to all my expectations. I got a dusty ethernet port
on the back of mine thats drying up faster than an old
woman's vagina living in the middle of the desert. And
eventually I might sell it in about 3-4 years and get a PS3
but theres no way in hell i'm paying for a brand new one for
$550.

It seems like more and more - all these e3 wars are starting
to look like a car show. Boost your ego and hide your small
penis by shelling out lots of money for a fancy system.
Remember graphics don't make a game fun, but it might get
you laid. lol

I think the PS3 will probably be pretty good, but why is it
that Sony is scared to do pretty much anything new? Their
controller is pretty much the same now, lots of the same
games coming out, and none of the things I've seen from it
make me particularly excited... especially the price tag. I
guess the 360 is in a similar situation, but right now I'm
really enjoying watching every game at E3 right from my 360,
which makes it worth it. Plus, it didn't cost me $600.

Of course, the lack of innovation is excluding the the
features they've nabbed from their competitors, but I'll let
that go.

I'm much more excited about the Wii (and it's price tag) at
this point.

Yes, Wii's excite me.

Seriously PS3's downfall is the price and that cant be
helped. Blu-ray is the way to be.

Nintendos price is friendly to everyone although the third
party support always seems to be weak. (cue 85 more pario
party games)

Xbox 360 didnt really do much for me. Its there but games
lack content (Tigerwoods 06)

Stoner- all your points are valid... but ultimately, it's
all moot. Tons of people have already considered and
dismissed the points your making. HDTV gaming is a big thing
now. Playing games on a big TV is always going to better
than on a monitor, and I think a very hefty chunk of 360
owners are people that got it for their home theater. Big
selling point. I bought one with mostly for that, I know a
few other people that have, as well. A PC would not suffice
for that role. And show me how the 360 is going to be
obsolete in 6 months. There's no software on the horizon
that suggest that.

And then there's Halo. Even if you don't like it, that
doesn't matter. It's fun.

Re-Sony- I don't understand your stance... it didn't meet
your expectations. OK. By no means are you required to be a
Sony fan. You say you don't like the selection of games, and
that you don't play online... cool... yet millions of other
people buy PS2 games by the armfuls, and millions more play
online all the time. I just played Metal Gear Online on
Monday. Why not just say ''I don't like the PS2, its games
don't appeal to me'' and then move on, rather than basically
say something akin to ''people only buy the PS2 and its
games because they're sheep''. Arrogant, and objectively
wrong anyway.

Regarding your comment about E3, I agree. Just macho
posturing. But don't be brainwashed... there are always
going to be tons of little ''art-house'' games that don't
get attention at shows like this. The PS2 has the most...
Gamecube had a ton of them, even Xbox has a lot of gems that
never get hyped (Sega's games alone justified buying an
Xbox, as far as I'm concerned). If anyone's buying into the
graphics/flashiness media blitz, it's you, not Sony gamers.
You can't seem to look past the hype and realize that
there's much more to it than that, even if the media doesn't
make a big deal about it.

PS- I liek you to. But u r such a fanboy lol

Box Bob- good posts, I agree that Heavenly Sword looks
wonderful. It's just balls-to-the-wall action, and fucking
amazing looking... must everything be ''innovative''? Why
can't games simply be ''fun''? That game looks insanely fun,
hot shit. Afrika caught my eye, too, not even sure what kind
of game that is. Resistance looks great, Insomniac are
money. The new Ratchet and Clank is supposed to be jaw
dropping... that's my favorite platform series going right
now, though I'll see how Mario Galaxies turns out.

I thought Gran Turismo was a pointless and underwhelming, to
be honest... it was literally just GT4 in HD. I think that
was a bad omen for the Sony conference. I have no doubt that
the final product will be awesome, but why show an enhanced
PS2 game to break the ice at a PS3 conference? I don't get
it... and I think the crowd was pretty unimpressed, too.

The game I was most disapointed to not see/hear anything
about... the new Devil May Cry.

And the price is indeed depressing. Doesn't matter much to
me though, I'll pay.

Other games I'm looking forward to- Alan Wake on Xbox 360.
I'm not even sure what kind of game it is, but it looks like
some kind of nice moody adventure in the Silent Hill mold. A
Resident Evil game was announced for Wii yesterday, that's
worth making a fuss over... actually, that's my most
anticipated game for Wii, not Mario or Zelda. I'm hoping for
a souped up RE4. I'm not a big fan of the Wii-mote, but it
will shine the most for games like RE.

Here's the full-length Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer, a robust 15 minutes. This
is what next-gen gaming is all about, for me. I want gaming
to advance as an art, first and foremost, input devices are
the least of gaming's problems... games play fine, it's the
artistic aspects that need to be advanced. This game is
going to be an experience.

if irrelevant discussion is at all possible - this is it:
discussing whether something is objectively worthy to be
discussed. jesus CHRIST!

so what - you don't like computergames, you don't like
talking about computergames. then just FUCK OFF out of the
thread and devote all your spare time pestering people with
pedantic comments about mistakes in spelling made on a
motherfucking messageboard of all places, YES, for that IS
important!

or better yet, keep commenting every other time tridenti
says something that annoys you, a much better way to spend
your time.

in short - don't make yourself look like an ignorant
dickhead.

In the grand scheme of things, video games are about as
impactful and signifigant as, say, Frank Zappa... which is
to say, not signifigant at all. What are we doing, if not
wasting time and having fun until we croak? Video games are
just another way to enjoy yourself.

And there's plenty of substance to them, a big reason I'm
into them are the composers. I'd take Keiichi Suzuki over
any of the artists discussed on the first page of XLT.

(except maybe Tuxedomoon...)

Ooh, this cat has claws! pwned

But yeah, that's pretty much it right there. What you do
with your spare time is no more substantial than what
Tridenti does when he plays with his Wii-wii. I'd think
someone that loves music (and Zappa) so much would know
better and be more open-minded.

i think you're underestimating zappa's influence but i get
your point.

you seem to think that "wasting time" is as significant a
preoccupation as having fun, yeah, we differ on this one
obviously so i'll let that one lie. yes videogames are fun,
but they represent just more time spent by people staring at
screens instead of interacting properly..

and what better note than that to

you can't be saying "wasting time" about Morrowind...or
Oblivion...cause they're ultimate games....they're games of
games. if you've played Morrowind you don't need to play any
other game in this world. cause Morrowind is perfect.

They're not a waste of time at all, though. There's a lot of
games that try hard to be more than just ''fun''. Metal Gear
being the most obvious example. It's got ridiculously
talented visual artists doing the graphics, accomplished
flim composers doing the music, and a nice hybrid style of
storytelling that incorporates post-modernism, melodrama,
what-have-you. No more a waste of time than listening to
Frank Zappa or Tuxedomoon while posting on XLT.

But yeah, I could argue about this all day, but something
tell me it would be fruitless. Like dancing about
architecture, yeah.
