Lets talk UK Grime!

Do you like it at all? What do you think are the best acts?
Is it going to be big this year, next year, or is it going
to die?
Tell me what you think!

Me, personally i love it, especially for the beats. Most
grime lyrics i've heard are stupid, but thats not really the
point. I love the energy.

My personal favourites:

Lethal Bizzle/fire camp: Really, some of the worst lyrics in
grime, but excellent beats. Forward riddim (Pow) is a grime
classic already. I really like his stuff. Heres a vid for
forward riddim 2. Really weird beat, needs to be listened to
loudly:

Fire camp

Reallion: Fresh beats. Lethal B also has his hands on this
Reallion

Dizzee rascal: I think "boy in da corner" is a great album.
The quiet moments are really good at times as well. Link to
one of my favourite tracks with dizzee: Just a rascal

Thats enough for now. Let me hear what you think.

that fire camp thing... they really should have turned the
tempo down about ten bpm, because they couldn't keep up with
the beat. that's really annoying.

these rappers all have annoying voices and suck at rapping.

yeah there's a french grime scene, it sucks a lot as well !
they rap nonsense, that could be funny but they are wack
mc's and their beats are not very good imo

check TTC - "dans le club" though, it's good and the lyrics
are very funny !

I just think, for people who like electronic music, grime
has some cool beats compared to a lot of music out there.

you're right about that. but they ruin it by rapping in
high-pitched yapping puppy voices about lizards and stupid
shit.

Its an acquired taste i guess, the british accent. Its also
works great live i think. Check out this clip from Kano
live. Craaaaaap sound qaulity, but you get the idea:

Kano

Its starts of with a different track, and gets into some
hard stuff, that really explodes at a point. Checkit!

"The grime scene is growing in France as well. The major UK
players started coming in for some hectic sets during the
end of year 2005. Some crews initially from the hip hop and
the garage scene are producing tracks & releasing mixtapes:
EGO6 , Audiomicid , ResoFantom/Dj Absurd , DJ Alsott, [[]].
RAW-T are massive in France compared to their home town."

I wonder if their howetown has more than 110 inhabitants
cause I've never heard of them !

offline mimi on 2006-05-04 18:21 [#01892937]
Points: 5721 Status: Regular

Anyway I don't know if what i like is called grime or if
it's called 2 steps or whatever, but i like emalkay,
kode9.....and ESPECIALLY toasty

offline belb from mmmmmmhhhhzzzz!!! on 2006-05-05 07:48 [#01893232]
Points: 6387 Status: Lurker

Toasty & emalkay are both awesome, that bassline on "the
knowledge" is fucking monolithic. Nice vex'd remix too.
Kode9 i'm not so into, not the tunes he's done with the
space ape anyway... that herby-mysticism patois he does gets
right on my nerves. I don't think any of them are really
grime though, dubstep really.

I'm not quite sure how to feel about a lot of "proper" grime
stuff, it's really in-yer-face but quite subtle at the same
time. Beats-wise i think it's a bit like electro, in that
it's easy enough to pull off something that "sounds grimey"
but really hard to find that special something to set it
above the rest: point being, there's a lot of really
mediocre 8-bar sine-wive bassline cack out there that sounds
like it's being played through a phone speaker. But i don't
think Production Values or whatever are the point...

Just listen to something like "anger management" by d double
e. Mostly unintelligible, overdriven and clipping to
buggery, but there's something just really, really
heavy about it. I think accusing grime of being shite
because the rhymes fall out of time is kind of silly too,
it's the raw energy driving the track forward that really
matters. Maybe it is something that has to grow on you.

Is it going to "be big"? I think it already is in a lot of
places, it's just not that visible. The growth of the
mixtape seems to have kinda put grime out of chart
circulation, stuff just doesn't get a proper release. I
mean, there's more of a vinyl culture to dubstep, but a lot
only comes out on dub or test pressing... i'm hoping it
doesn't go the same way as grime, where everyone's stuck
listening to the same tunes on channel u and only a few djs
get access to the newest stuff.

Anyway, personal favourites? Virus syndicate, slew dem,
ironsoul, mr keas, geeneus, trim, devlin, d double e,
blackmass plastics, warlock... tons of gems once you start
looking.

Wow, that's a ramble and a half, sorry :)

i'm digging the instrumental stuff, i guess dubstep and
stuff like vexed. i think that most of the time grime emcees
are annoying. then again, i'm an american and i don't really
understand wtf they're saying. it's probably not that
important anyways.

Have you heard the (I think it's by Tinchy Strider) parody
of "Just a Rascal", called "Just and Arsehole"?

Grime is good, but it ruins a track for me when lyrics sound
like a motivational speech from a call centre team leader.

I heard that one, but i thought crazy titch made it? At
least, Wiley, Lethal B and Dizzee are all hating each other
apparently

Yeh it was crazy titch, didn't he get arrested for murder
fairly recently? Over a diss track i think, i mean, grow up.
Never thought much of his stuff anyway... i'll say one thing
though, dizzee can't freestyle worth shit, it's embarassing.

Thats true. Crazy titch just uses the other peoples beats,
to make shit. He's really not good. And no, dizzee cant
freestyle at all. Have you seen the clip, where he's almost
fighting dizze? Pretty funny actually. Very Grime. But i
really love "Boy in da corner" i have to say. Really
excellent beats.

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2006-05-08 13:06 [#01894972]

i enjoy about 40% of the tracks i hear, but its still pretty
sweet. sometimes i have issues with the production, but i
feel like in the last couple of years they've really started
to get their act together... its not that i don't like it
raw, its just that there's a fine line between good-raw and
lazy sophomoric shit.

that said, some of the tracks on this new Sway album are
waaaay too clean. still, charismatic guy.

Cheers for bringing this up, dirty.

Yeah, it's a shame grime hasn't really exploded the way drum
and bass did. Fucking hell, this decade sucks.
Have you heard Muscial Mob 2002 track "Pulse X"? It's meant
to be the "seminal" grime instrumental. My favorite thing
about the sound is those big, dirty gabba kicks as featured
on Dizzee's I Luv U.

it's kinda dancehall
i bought a used copy of The Bug Cd on rephlex

i knew it was similar to dancehall...but i tought the tracks
were without any fuckin lyrics
so it's kinda dancehall
so i can lsiten to it only for 10 minutes per week

i prefer ragga jungle 10000 more...and i really enjoy it

You've got it all wrong, the bug doesnt make Grime, he in
fact makes sort of "distorted dancehall". Also cool enough,
but grime is a different thing. An easier listen, i think.

And Swears, i noticed you and i are often into the same
stuff. I like that about you.
