I've previously had them organized by genres. then I had the best artist on the left and start from there. if I have more than one album by the same artist I'll start from the oldest.
But yesterday I thought that it could be better to do it in a simple alphabetical order? what's your style?

same problem, and I got these new and nice wooden boxes for them. so now i'm trying to find out the best way to sort them. seems that alphabetical could be the best as there I wouldnt waste any space, as with genres I'll need to leave a little space between em.

I keep my Cds in alphabetical order. When I search for some artists, I usually find them easily. I'm pretty satisfied with my kind of order.

If you have parties it's always nice to just tell your guests that the music is sorted alphabetically, and they can easily find whatever they want to hear even when drunk :)

used to be in alphabetical order, then in chronological order for records by the same artist... but now it's pretty much like i feel.
i've been thinking of classifying them by spine colour, so my collection would look like a nice rainbow, but i don't think it would actually look like a rainbow at all with all those black, white, multicoloured, not-really-colour-defined and weird-coloured spines.
by the way, i have metallic cd towers - and that's a bad idea. digipaks are ok but jewel cases get all scratched...

Alphabetical is rubbish!
My records are grouped into similar groups, so if I want a particular sound I can go there, then they are generally split so similar labels or artist are groups.
Generally, you can start one end of a shelf and roughly work along and they will mix reasonably well.
Alphabet is pants because the sounds are in no order, only the artist names. So when you are say mixing and want a certain style you can go straight to it, instead of thinking "hmmm is that artist x or artist a"
If people want a particular artist, they look near the section which best desribes the style of music.

i disagree...
alphabetical order is pretty much objective, whereas genres are subjective. when i'm looking for a particular artist at the record shop (when i'm still going to a record shop, that is - i buy most of my cds on the internet now), i always have to look through two or three different classifications.
is beck classified into pop/rock or indie? is air classified into pop/rock, indie, or electro? is mr bungle classified into pop/rock or indie? *can't find it* *asks* it was classified into metal!
oh, aphex twin was in the trip-hop section... is melt-banana into indie, metal or...? where the hell is merzbow? etc.

yes, but even so, i could (and would) still have difficulty fitting some particular records into a genre or another... there will always be some unclassifiable ones, even between the genres i'd have made up myself. i won't pretend to be able to find a "perfect" classification that would be flawless...
i'm against the idea of classification, not just against the particular classification (into rock, pop, indie rock, techno, ambient, etc) people use.
