Ok.. I heard that not many girls if any upload their own
stuff here for people to listen to, so, i thought i'd give
it a go.

This is a song i've been working on for a little while now
in college, it's not fully finished quite yet but i'm happy
with how it's going so far and i'd appreciate some feedback
on what i've done.. Interested to see what people think of
it.

Please be gentle, i haven't been making music for too long
and i'm a lil nervous bout doin this..

Be warned, you do have to click 2 links before you actually
download the file [sorry, its the damn upload site]

Morning Dew

I hope the title has nothing to do with Oscillik's dawn
emissions.

this is quite tasteful for an early attempt (i know i did
all sorts of horrible things with fruityloops for years
before i made anything halfway decent). it's pleasant and
it shows you have a good ear. while it doesn't exactly rock
me like a hurricane, it is a good solid effort.

i'd like to hear another mix with some forwards vocals and
no guitar. :)

Not sure the original vocals would fit with this mix but i
was considering writing new vocals for this version. Thank
you for your feedback

I thought it was pretty good, yeah! Made me think of
something that might have appeared on that 4AD offshoot
label Guernica in 1996, someone like Insides, but that's a
good thing. It sounds a bit hesitant, a bit nervous, but
again, that's not a bad thing.

I prefer it backwards when you can hear the vocals properly,
though.

nooooo you're not meant to hear it the other way, that was a
different song i had made

There was a reason to the other song and a reason to the
vocals

This is something completely different. The other version is
called Its nothing new, i have a copy of that song also

like arf said, it's very tasteful for someone starting up
indeed. It goes on a bit too long I think, and the backwards
guitarscreaming gets a bit annoying (personal preference),
but the backwards vocals are pretty good, and fit very well

oh thank you! i actually really like yours too. i don't mind
the backward vocals at all - they fit the atmosphere of the
track. this is very relaxing, and has a solid composition.
the melody is really soothing, so are the vocals. it's
just.... pleasant. i really like it. well done!

as part of her assignment for the college she has to put it
with some video, it can be anything at all (ripped from DVD,
recorded from TV, recorded yourself, anything)

because the college is useless and has very little equipment
or amenities she opted to rip some video from a DVD

she got it playing alongside the chapter from Donnie Darko
where everything goes in reverse just before the plane
engine crashes through the bedroom with Donnie in bed.
without any editing to the video, it just...fits.

It's not really the kind of song that you'd normally find
here but it was requested so i'm giving it a go.. I composed
it, performed vocals and edited, arranged, engineered and
mastered it myself. As with Morning Dew of course

Ha! Well I really like it, I like your voice and you do get
over a sense of, I don't know, resigned emotion that is
quite, effective. Most times you hear people sing and you
get that "oooooh, no" kind of, twinge of embarrassment, I've
known people.. trying to sing or do any sorts of vocals and
it's just.. you know, Please don't! But yes, I like it,
maybe you need more confidence, just going by you spamming
the track with the backwards vocals, but I did like, as I
say, your voice. A simple track sure, but, far more
involving than any dry old cut beats 'n' synths. Good job,
spam more!

haha well thank you very much for your kind words dog_belch
and i'll try to have the confidence to post more of my stuff
in the future, Morning Dew is actually another real song i
made, it just came from It's Nothing New.
Thanks so much for your kind comments on my vocals. I guess
i am quite a nervous singer even though i have been told i'm
good in the past..

The only reason i didn't post It's Nothing New first is
because 1)its not electronic at all in any way, 2) it's a
personal song and i was hesitant to put it out there.. i
just thought Morning Dew would be better recieved but both
seem to be doing quite well in their own right so thank you
again. You've all made my night

I don't agree unfortunately r4of. The only thing i disliked
about my guitars in any way was how my main guitar part had
been played during recording.. My guitarist messed up on the
strings but only i can understand whats wrong with it
because i've heard it played different, if that makes
sence..

Anyhow, your personal opinion but i'm happy with how the
guitars sound. They fitted where i wanted them to go

this is pretty god damned close to awesome!

you need to make certain of the hihats a little less
prominent and personally I'd prefer them to be microbeat
hits instead of hihats, but it works either way.

the guitars need to go, yes

you should record many more layers of your voice singing the
same things it is singing now, pan them around, fill up some
space and even possibly sing some "second voices" or
whatever the english terms for it would be.. I mean, I see
you've done some stuff to the voices, but just re-record
according to the original recording and do the same cutting
on all takes...

I think its pretty good. You use some really good sounds,
for a self confessed n00b (doesnt sound to presetty). I love
reversed guitars, but i dont like the reversed vocals at
all, i must confess. Just seems like a bad idea, but again,
i have never heard that effect in use where i really liked
it. Seems like the production is very thin. You have to
decide if youre making dreamy soft music, or something more
"full" (where is the bassline?). This is like an annoying
thing in the middle.

Its like i'm always wating for the track to kick off, if you
get my drift.

But but but, i'm sounding all negative here. I actually
thought it was really promising. Would just love to hear
some more conventianal "songs" from you. It could be great!

But i must encourage you to make/put up some more music
(even if its not electronic, youre a girl, different rules
apply to you lot on this board) And stop reversing the
vocals. Please.

is just plain good. But keep experimenting with electronic
stuff, could make you the new Solex

This was good! I like the bed of reversed guitar strums, and
the electric guitar bits at 2:00 and 4:00 are very, very
cool.

Although I generally like loud drums with few effects,
considering the subdued, calmly reflective nature of the
track you might want to consider toning down the drums a
little, maybe adding some subtle delay or reverb.. I don't
know. They just seemed a little too 'hot' at times.

The second mp3 was nice too, but I think the first one you
posted is much more interesting. Good job..
especially for a first attempt!

congs on being a girl, you came to the right place.

i thought it was alright. too generic sounding and
incoherent arrangement. but promising. i don't think you
necessarily need a versechorusversebridgechorus but more
focus. you do have a nice natural voice, and some good
ideas. come back again after you've made a few more tracks.

although i'm not sure alot of people agree with you. I did
like it personally.. i wasn't thrilled with how my main

get alot of stick for what i do anyway i was kinda proud

Its always hard to do something as technical as this when

I HATED my crash cymbal at the beginning of the song, and as
you'll notice it only lasted for a few bars. However when i
played it to a friend of mine at college he told me to leave
at least a couple of bars of it in.. arg! So many different
views! Loads of people love the vocals and then others hate
it.. same with the guitars...I can see why Boards Of Canada
have it so rough.. so many different people to try and
please!

i personally love their music and alot of people complained
about the amount of guitars on The Campfire Headphase
