Now, lets discuss Machine Drum - Now You Know [MERCK 005].
Details can be found here

Any messages NOT related to this particular release
will be mooned

Thanks to Mooken for introducing this through the
BLIMP house party vol1.
I think it's a really good blend of electronica, though the
influences shine through alot, I like the energy in the
tracks.

well, I would say it's a cross between BoC and Prefuse 73
...but definatly not hiphop...if this is hiphop, Mr. Oizo
would be hiphop too

I think this is machine drum's best. Very crunchy, and the
stuttering vocals which are now more or less cliché appeals
to me :)
My favorite tracks: Wishbone be broken, Jewlea, Thanks very
much, Hello my future.

why is it not hip hop?

cause its not.

why do i find it boring?

because it doesnt offer anything interesting to me.

-
i remember i used to speak to him through instant messenger
and we got into an argument about what hiphop is...it was
comical...esp after i saw pics of him - hahaha

it ;-)

What would you consider hiphop anyway? If your using the
culture as a reference, then it isn't. But if you are
looking at from a strictly musical standpoint, then I would
have to dissagree.

But it doesn't fit into the hiphop culture at all? No.

i would say yes, shadow is hip hop

drumachine doesnt seem to employ what i appreciate in hip
hop - no turntablism, no samples, no b-boy (type) culture,
no mcing (chopping up shitty vocals does NOT count)

its lap-hop - i would never consider it hip hop, ever

i cant sit down and say, wow, i know this guy listens to erc
b & rakim, or old soul records, or really dug in a shitty
dusty crate for that break

hence...it aint hip hop to me

stretch the boundaries, fine, im all for it, but i cant
consider what he does hiphop

same thing as i call machine drum - boring

hip hop is not a culture. hip hop is fashion, and styles
that significantly appropriate hip hop fashion can be said
to be "hip hop." hip hop doesn't belong to anybody, and
anybody can take from hip hop whatever they want.

i don't think i've really heard enough machine drum to say
whether or not it's hip hop. but i'm inclined to go with
drunken mastah on this one.

oh, hip hop is a culture! that's for sure.. it is,
however, also a musical style that, while it isn't
completely separate from the culture, is a thing all on its
own, and the music doesn't have to follow the trends of the
culture and the culture doesn't have to follow the trends of
the music. the music isn't some mystical entity that you
only gain divine access to if you're a part of the culture;
you don't have to be a gangsta to appreciate gangsta rap,
you don't have to be black to appreciate hip hop, you don't
have to be anything, you just have to.. well, you need
ears/a sense of hearing (or a sense of touch, as I am told
deaf people still enjoy music by feeling the vibrations).

machine drum is dope. it sucks that you can't appreciate his
music. i've personally paid out of my pocket to have him
perform at a park party i had. try listening to Urban
Biology. just listen with an open mind and try to visualize
what he's done.

to the dude that said that hiphop is a fashion and nothing
more - you've obviously never been to a real hiphop show or
seen a b-boy in action. many people only "participate" in
the fashion side of hiphop, but in reality, there is so much
more to it than just your clothing, hair cut, etc. it's
about the rhythm, it's all about the rhythm. everything else
is just bullshit.

What are you talking about??? A lot of great rap and hiphop
was done with drum machines. Its not all just juggling
beats, and rapping.

And prefuse 73 is hiphop. He has been embraced by many of
the icons in hiphop culture, as well has having his
productions being accepted by black radio.

i cant recall how many times ive heard the true-roots hip
hop argument being used against stuff like prefuse or
machine drum or anticon, when its really just an unfair
reactionary response to people who "feel they know what the
genre implies".

stop being uptight about it. people use broad genre terms
all the time in reference to what they talk about; not
everyone has a huge fucking back history on every single
genre, because you could go in circles in claiming "what is
REALLY something". you can say something has hip hop styling
without being true to the roots. its people that complain
about this that annoy me.

its like if i say i listen to "hardcore" when i talk about
old man gloom and neurosis, then you get 'real true fans'
who start bitching at you by saying "ITS NOT TRUE HARDCORE,
ITS METALCORE".

its entirely possibly to take influences from hip hop and
inject them into what you are doing, and calling it loosely,
and NON LITERALLY, hip hop. who cares? why does it even
matter to you? do i have to be a black man from detroit in
order to make detroit techno? do i have to live there and
"feel its culture" in order to call my music detroit techno?
does anyone?

culture is important yes, but dont fucking bullhorn it
around. people arent going to WANT to learn about anything
you speak of if you just start complaining about how wildly
it gets used. people can still like the sound but not be
part of the culture. what youre implying is that in order to
appreciate it you have to live it. not everyone can live the
culture, so should they limit themselves to what they know?
even if its just a small branching out--even if it doesnt
incorporate all aspects of hip hop culture, people can still
enjoy it. theres absolutely nothing wrong with that, and
what machine drum or any other artists do. so dont fucking
tell people what is and what isn't right about it, its up to
them to decide how they feel about it.

word!

I'm whiter than snow, I love hip-hop, I'm no gangsta (I live
in norway for gods sake!) but I still love gangsta rap, I've
never been a part of any hip hop culture, but yet the music
is one of the things closest to my heart

that said, machine drum and prefuse are most
definately
hip hop.

i still disagree, but i suppose we probably have different
notions about what constitutes a culture. "culture" is a
very flexible word and to really get to the bottom of this
issue is beyond the scope of a message board, given that hip
hop has been around for many years now and represents the
dominant movement in popular culture of the past 20+ years.
i think there is a powerful desire to attibute
culture-status to hip hop in general because it has become a
powerful signifier of "cool" in the united states (can't
speak for any other country). but hip hop is missing too
much of what makes a "culture" a culture. there's no
question that we could debate this for ages...
