i'm not saying he's underground, cos he's certainly not, but
if he was pop he'd be played on the radio 24hrs a day

How many people are on this board... 400 and some??? I dont
think thats enough people to be considered mainstream.... I
mean common... If i did a pool in the streets here.. I bet i
could go thew an intire day without interviewing one person
that has heard of Aphex Twin.

i think an artist can be popular without being
"mainstream".

for example, do you consider radiohead to be mainstream?
they sell millions of records, but it's not mainstream
MUSIC.

my english is not good enough to get my point clear, but i
hope you can see what i mean...

If i would interview people my age on the streets here in
stockholm i bet 20% would say they had heard of him.
But i allso bet that only 1% would actually own a record.
And it allso depends on what streets i would do the
interviews on, there are mainstrem streets and there are
streets with lots of good recordshops.
On certain streets i think 90% would know of him and 20%
would own a record.
But ofcourse im only guessing. lol

Thats cos they lulled everyone into a false sense of
security and then threw thme into the deep end. They were
already high popular before kid a and arguably only got the
number of people buying kid a due to their established
fanbase.

Aphex Twin may not be played on the radio, but a LOT of
people have heard his name, even if they havent heard his
music. It seems a lot of people on this board think Warp is
the embodiment of underground, there are a lot of people out
there who talk about being "more enlightened" musically than
you guys the way you talk about being more enlightened
musically than the general music listening public.

warp is most definitely not underground, just non-mainstream
is the best way ot describe it.

Yeah I know, a lot of people here though seem to think they
are on the cutting edge if they listen to Warp, which I
think is quite funny.

I'd still say a lot o hte music is cutting edge, but warp is
probably if not definitely one of the biggest independent
labels putting out the same knid of music.

Oh yeah I totally agree they put out tons of cutting edge
stuff, im just saying that listening to Warp doesnt make one
some all knowing avantgarde electronica guru as some people
seem to think.

I suppose it would depend on where you live. Here in
Edmonton I have not come across anyone who has heard of
Aphex Twin (that dose not include the people on this board
of course).
