It's hard to say. I'd like to say I'd still listen, but in reality I probably wouldn't. I like aphex's music because it is unconventinal and like nothing I've heard before. If afx were mainstream I'd be hearing afx and a million copycat bands 24 hours a day. The originality and life would be sucked out of the music.
Then again I still like black sabbath and velvet underground so maybe I would still like aphex.

I just saw an interview with 'spearhead' and he said something that I totaly agree with.
"We need people playing devils advocate. Even if everthing is great someone should be opposed to it."
Without discontent there is no progress.

yeah, if Aphex Twin was mainstream, that's the type of music that would be on the radio 24/7... so it's hard to say... probably not, because I listen to APhex Twin and electronic music because it's different... if Aphex Twin became mainstream popular after I was already a fan, obviously yes, I'd still listen...

Oh?? well this man is truly wise beyond his years. I know acouple of people that are soooo influenced buy the majority that they wont even consider listening to other music tho. That just makes me mad! Im always open to listen to music my friends say is good and will give an honest oppinion. But when it comes to my music. They all tell me to screw off. Or if i do get them to let me put it in... they dont really listen to it then they say sumthing along the lines of "man that was crap"... just makes me angry how un open some people are.

unopen? No doubt... just look at how unopen people are to differences of religon, and skin color, and blah blah blah, the list goes on and on... it's so stupid how most people can't accept differences from the "norm"... I was watching Star Trek the other day, and Whoopi Goldbergs character (don't know how to spell the name) said something like "Fitting in? Oh my what a bad thing... I never want to fit in"... and that is a good point... why would anyone want to be the same as anyone else? It's so stupid the way society is... The differences are what make each of us beautiful... this might sound lame the way I'm saying it, but it's true...

If he was popular, I think I'd like him, but not as much.
Same goes for ANY underground artist, I guess... I'm a pretentious, elitist bastard! I get a kick out of listening to stuff that nobody else will touch.
I'd still like him a ton, but probably not as much, I like some mainstream music, but there's something about liking music that nobody else likes... like it or not, we're pretentious wankers. :-) ''We know something yooooouuuu don't, mainsteam idiots, naa-naa-nanaaa-naa!''

He's not mainstream, not by a long shot! If people DO know who he is (and that's only because certain magazines and media will mention him to prove they have ''indy sensibility''), they don't like him, or haven't heard anything except Come to Daddy and Windowlicker. And hated them!

My definision of mainstream would have to be a band/group/person that gets lots of airtime on the radio/tv and has the brunt of the population wishing they had the chance to meet them. Poor bastards... I cant see a backstreet boy being very interesting if i ever had the chance to meet one. In fact i probably would end up with assult charges before the night was threw......... but then again.... a hardcore fan probably would too... but for completely different reson.

man, if aphex was mainstream, life would be real cool right? i mean, if everyone was diggin on the good the shit.... i can only imagine. deep into the future, i see a world where all the music is good and honest, once people get over the material hype and realize the soul and the highs that can come from music. we'll have like a rennaisance (sp?) revival and there will be musicians in the streets and you can imagine the rest...

I'm almost the same as you Ophecks...
"The internet is literally the only connection I have to other Aphex Twin fans... that's how ''mainstream'' he is. I've never met anyone that likes him, and only a couple that
know he exists. If I didn't have the net, I wouldn't know who this fucker is! "
Thats almost me, except I knew of him before I was on the net (I'm pretty new to the net really).
It can be pretty bad liking something so much and not knowing anyone that feels the same way you do. Awww, god bless this place =D
But I've started my mission! I sent a friend in Sydney a tape of lots of Richards stuff to him. I disnt have a tape player so he used the one at work (He works at a bottle shop). While playing Elephant a couple commented "Whats that awful music?" But he really didnt get a good chance to listen, you know all that working and stuff.
So I sent him the windowlicker video and he said it was wicked. So now I've got this idea, using my PS2's CD function I'll tape some tracks to video and send it to him so he can listen in his home.
And I got another friend to get SAW85-92 cause I wouldn't stop talking about this Aphex Twin. I think he likes it!
And if Aphex was mainstream I'm sure I'd still be a fan cause as I've said before I don't care if it's the most mainstream track ever or the most underground no one has heard this before track, if I like it then I like it, no matter what.

Just because he's listened to all around the world doesn't make him popular...because westlife aren't listened to in Brazil does it make them underground? no. The thing about this music is that its listeners are more evenly distributed around to world compared to other genre's, and its most porbably to do with lack of lyrics, so little music boundry. I personally don't know a single person off this board who listens to aphex, and anyone who thinks he's mainstream must be living in some kind of aphex pocket abnormality, the lucky bastard!
