Coil and Threshold House

Hey everyone who gives a shit about Coil.

I submitted an idea to Thresholdhouse.com suggesting that
they should sell compilations of Coil's out of print (all of
them) albums on DVDs as either solid uncompressed images
(Alcohol 120% or Nero) or even plain wav files.

They haven't replied yet... so I take it they thought it was
a retarded idea...

What do you guys think?

it's not a retarded idea, but i'd much rather see their
albums get a re-release in the usa so that i can finally
fucking afford them. i can't believe every indie label in
the country isn't knocking down their door trying to license
coil's material.

yeah, I'd rather have normal rereleases on cd.

still, I'd buy a dvd full of Coilstuff.

same here, i'd like to have rereleases on cd.

i'd like to have queens of the circulating library on
cd, among others... there must be some place that still has
it, i've found constant shallowness leads to evil in
london this summer...

i'm having mixed feelings about the ape of naples by
the way...

(there was a thread about it but you know how the search
engine is.)

some tracks are really beautiful, but a few others are kind
of naff... jhonn's vocals are not as good as they usually
are i think, and the whole album has a slow/"self-indulgent"
atmosphere i'm not that fond of. i get the impression that
it lacks something...

'fire of the mind': bad choice for an introduction, as this
is one of the naff ones. in my opinion. some instruments
sound kitsch but not in a good way, and i don't like jhonn's
singing so much on it. : /

'the last amethyst deceiver': a new version of amethyst
deceivers, more atmospheric/mellow, and very beautiful.

'tattoed man': not sure i like it that much. it sounds a
bit... ironic/nasal/happy-sad, with a circus-like melody.

'triple sun': now that's a lovely one. if you've heard
...and the ambulance died in his arms, you've heard
it, it's the studio version of 'triple sun introduction'.
basically the same track, doesn't change much at all. it's
also very simple, a bit like a loop that could go on
forever. but lovely.

'it's in my blood': does that line sound familiar to you?
...yes, that's another reworking of an old track (called
'a.y.o.r.' - non-album track). but much slower, with strings
also (the original loop is kept though) and a different
feel. it has a palpable tension within.

'i don't get it': jhonn's voice gets mental in this one, but
the vocals are really (unfortunately?) in the background of
the song... which has apart from that the same
slow/stringed/kitschy/"self-indulgent" atmosphere as the
rest of the album, except that there are saxophones too (i
like them very much).

'heaven's blade': a different mood than the rest of the
album, with a darker, more "alive" atmosphere. one of the
best ones on the album, i think.

'cold cell': again, a reworking of an old track (called 'a
cold cell'). i like this version better, didn't like the
original 'a cold cell' that much but this one's good... yes,
the album has a lot of new versions of old tracks.

'teenage lightning 2005': as i was saying... (couldn't they
have found a better title than just adding '2005' at the
end? kinda sucks -_-). this one is the least "improving" of
the new versions, and copy-pasting the laughter from the end
of constant shallowness leads to evil at the end of
the track wasn't a good idea either. but it's good
nevertheless.

'amber rain': another one where i don't like jhonn's vocals
that much. jhonn was a particular kind of singer for me - i
like his voice a lot when he speaks and screams, but not
that much when he sings... apart from that, pretty good.
sounding very sad.

'going up': the instrumental part is flawless or almost, but
then again i'll complain on the vocals. this time they're
not from jhonn balance though (!)... another singer does
them, opera-style. (i also have difficulty with the fact
that the last track on the last album by coil has lyrics
like "ground floor perfumery, stationery and leather
goods..." and is a tribute to a tv show apparently. o_o)

all in all, it's still a good album i think... it's worth
getting. but just not "perfect" nor mindblowing.

it was my understanding that they were going to try to make
coil's entire discography available digitally or something
to that effect... so yeah, maybe that idea would be
viable... as for Ape of Naples, i like it definitely, but i
think Black Antlers (a not so old cdR release) was amazing,
and i was disappointed not to see more revamped tracks from
that on there... come on now, we need a proper mastering of
Sex with Sun Ra!!!

There is another (extended) version of Sex with Sun Ra that
you might want to check out. You can download it here:

The only entirely new track on "Ape of Naples" are Fire of
the Mind, Amber Rain, and Going Up. It's In My Blood, I
Don't Get It, and Heaven's Blade are all reworkings of
tracks originally recorded for Backwards, which obviously
never got released. Tatooed Man was only played live as far
as I know, and the rest are from previous albums.

just thought I'd say that

available somewhere?

Man, we have the exact opposite views on this album, ha. I
think Tatooed Man is beautiful and darkly funny and sad, and
Heaven's Blade is the bad kind of cheese. And I love how the
album opens. But even when I disagree, I can see where
you're coming from. Overall I love the album, though it's
kind of grab-bag of styles and sounds. The album had a great
first impression on me because some of the songs are
stunning, but after about ten listens, it's suddenly gotten
stale for me. Eh.

I remember reading somewhere (maybe the coil mailing list)
that Tatooed Man was supposed to be a continuation of the
ideas of Sex With Sun Ra. Maybe not exactly "part 2", but
if you listen to the lyrics you can sortof make the
connection.

I like 'Fire of the Mind' and 'Tatooed Man' well...

There is actually a site on the net with the MP3s of that
thing, just look up 'Ape of Naples' and 'MP3' on yahoo. Make
sure to use a download resume program... since 2 and 6
always fuck up.

Anyway, I haven't heard any of Thighpaulsandra's stuff... I
was thinking about buying 'I', but haven't got around to it.
Supposedly one site still has it that I can think of...

I'll search for 'Queens of the Cir...'

its worth the 25 and upwards to buy the releases anyway

ive spent several hundreds on coil releases boxsets limited
editions etc

and dont regret a penny and i would never consider selling
any of them

this holds true for other bands in the same caliber

nurse with wound, the hafler trio, blah blah blah

good art doesnt come cheap

also i HIGHLY recommend the entire catalog of
Thighpaulsandra
its quite brilliant
