[SPAM] Piano Sonata

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2006-01-24 12:07 [#01826161]

So yeah, this piano sonata is for my composition portfolio
to graduate. I spent most of last semester working on it,
and I just finished it this last week.

Its in 3 movements, the first being in sonata form, the
second being ABA, and the third, in rondo form.

Its very light hearted, and meant to be gentle and stuff. I
was going to do a really atonal modern piece, but when I
started writing, I just decided I wanted something that
people could listen to, and enjoy, and feel happy. So here
it is.

1st Movement
2nd Movement
3rd Movement

Enjoy!

I gotta say the upper octaves don't sound particularly good
on the sound you used, but I like this. a lot.

well they sound good enough, but a bit thin I guess. still a
very good piano overall.

2nd movement was dark, it's the Empire Strikes Back to the
rest of your work. really put me in a mood, powerful stuff.

3rd movement was really nice too, I can't decide whether I
like 1 or 3 better, listening to 1 again now.

Right now i am listening to the first movement. It really is
lighthearted. It reminds me of spring. Its a nice piece i
keep picturing some intense breaks being thrown behind it.
That could be fun! ;)

I really like this one so far. I thought the ending was an
appropreate one! I really enjoyed that one

--------
I like this one. Its a nice slower piece. Rather relaxing. I
enjoy it
Not much to say about this second one. I do enjoy it but it
didnt give me as many ideas as the first one. 8/10

----------

The third one reminds me of a city coming to life in the
early morning hours. People rushing around accomplishing
tasks. Time lapse camera work. People drinking coffee. It
sounds like how it looks for the downtown white collar
workers in a moderately big city looks.

This seemed shorter but that isnt a bad thing. Out of the
three i liked this one the best.

As a whole i think it paints a nice portrait.

I like it. :)

Thanks for sharing matt

Zephyr: Thanks for listening! I personally like the 2nd
movement the best. I was really in a mood to do slower, more
moody stuff, but the first and third movements are supposed
to be uptempo and energetic, so I only could do it on the
second movement.

virgin: haha, yeah, I kept wanting to throw some breaks in
while writing these. Maybe when I have sometime, ill redo
them into normal tracks with synths and drums etc. I'm glad
you like it, and im especially glad you think it all works
as a whole!

Thanks for listening guys!

VP: You've seen "Man With the Movie Camera", didn't you? I
got a very similar feeling at the beginning of the third
movement.

The whole piece sounds very cinematic and would make a great
score to some low-key short animated Amelie.
I didn't get the second movement whough. I understand that
it is a crucial part of the sonata, but it just didn't evoke
anything here.

The third movement is my favoorite too. I guess it was
supposed to work like it worked on me with the third part
lifting you up after the darkness of the second movement.

how do you do these?.. i sturggle to play beethoven fur
elise first bit.

Did you have piano lessons etc?...

I play keyboard in my freetime, i'm getting better, but
don't know any theory.

also, is this been playin live?
you must have like a 8 octave keyboard or something.

I like first and third.
I don't normally like sad stuff unless it has a really nice
tune i can relate to and enjoy.

the third one ubtrutley stops which is a shame..

thanks for the share.

QRDL: thanks for listening! Yeah, its supposed to go 1. get
your attention, 2. get serious, 3. lighten the mood. or so
"they" say

exsub: its all sequenced, I can't play piano for shit.
Although, I did take into consideration physical limits.
Theres some tricky jumping around on here, but a pro pianist
can pull it off.

torture: yeah, I need some orchestral sounds for sketches,
and GPO was cheap. Yeah, I have to get it recored to
graduate!

Zeus

Awh that's a shame, then again this is excellent composing
and i for one would not be able to do anything a-like!

lol, i was wondering how you was doing the octave notes
(when you use a note the same pitch but an octave higher)
lol, it is very hard whilst your playing.

Oh and here's something you may find interesting.

EWQL

Find the gold version. then after, find the XP version. if u
want both for free tell me.

yeah, I've drooled over that page many a time ;)

I don't like to pirate stuff... I like owning what I use,
but thanks for the offer!

And yeah, those octaves are hard... whoever I get to play
this needs to have a strong arm, cause it will kill them
after awhile.

To be honest i always enjoyed your ambient work and i have
watched you progress through school as you have shared this
material with us. I like how you think.

When i listen to music I hear what other people are hearing
in their heads. Like "this is what he had in mind here". Its
insightful. You have progressed alot in the time i have
known you. Its pretty cool to see that.

You should maybe try blending the two sometime. It could
produce interesting results.

No sir i have not. Thats an album though right? Wasnt it on
Skam or something? Dont shoot me! Ninja tune? I cant
remember.

When i listen to music i build scenes around it. Like what
the video would look like. Or a movie. All music is
automatically a soundtrack to me. There is music for every
moment in life.

That to me is completely awesome! :)

Oh man, you're sooo dead!!

"Man With a Movie Camera" is an experimental documentary by
Dziga Vertov. It begins with scenes of Odessa coming up to
life in the morning.
You were probably thinking about the soundtrack made by
Cinematic Orchestra. I think Biosphere made one too. And
Robotobibok played to it live (best of the three).
You must see it, it's one of the most important classics of
the silent era and is by no means dated.

And yeah Zeus, try combining your two styles and make us
proud with your collaboration with Fernando Corona in five
years.

QRDL: not sure if you heard this, but this is what I
consider to be my combination of styles... its an ambient
piece, but I approached it very much like an orchestral
piece, at least in my mind. Pyractomena Borealis

Virigin: thank you very much! It means a lot to me!

enjoy.

Listening to the first one - lovely! Post the live version
when you get it recorded. As you say it'll be quite a
workout for the performer - you'll make him grunt and moan
like Glenn Gould.

okay that was a + stuff.

but i just have to listen to it again when it will be played
live.

i mean it lacks "humanity" - every note plays at full power,
like you would play the piano with a hammer.

actually - i like the first and the third very much. just a
few mistakes maybe - some notes kind of sting into the ear.

but you can hear in 100 % that this isn't some two day work
- congrats !

sadist: Thanks! I'll be sure to post the live version when
it all comes together. Im curious which notes you feel are
mistakes?

yeah, I did it in Logic, with the Garritan Personal
Orchestra piano sound.

fleetmouse: thank you :) Yeah, it should be interesting to
see how the piano player deals with this. I'm working on the
score right now... its hectic... all sorts of clef changes
every few beats, and hands completeing lines etc. It will be
interesting...

this garritan thing sucks....

uh it shivers me to think about it when your player will add
the use of sustain pedals.... brrr

for example in 1.53 and 2.02 in the first movement

i mean not really mistakes... i shouldn't call it like
that.

but as it's meant to be a sonata and not a soundtrack i
would consider these as not accurate

ah yeah, that note bugged my girlfriend at first, but it

not sure what you mean by sonata and not a soundtrack
though...

I have been listening to this on repeat for about 3 hours,
using it as my soundtrack to Guild Wars (onling RPG). It
makes traveling through the forest feel almost cinematic.
Definately enjoying this as a soundtrack. Thanks again for
