Brian Eno and Harold Budd made the best ambient album ever? Me thinks so, I love this SO DAM much. I cant get tired of it. If you havent got it buy it now. |

This sublime, tranquil recording features 11 haunting ambient tone poems for treated piano. They are crafted from simple chords, arpeggios, or melodies that are frequently trailed by delicate electronic whispers to produce dreamy results. Even though Budd and Eno chose to compose and record in a minimalist style, their gorgeous, moody music evokes so much more, for the reverberating spaces between the notes are just as important as the notes themselves. In an interesting experiment, both "Against the Sky" and "An Echo of Night" explore the same melancholic musical theme in different settings--the former is a sparse piano piece with gentle electronic treatments, the latter is a murky synth work set against a nocturnal outdoor backdrop. (Budd later explored the theme again as the ethereal elegy "Olancha Farewell" on his 1986 solo album, Lovely Thunder.) Beautifully understated, the slow-motion ballet of The Pearl is a piece of striking ambient impressionism that was highly original in its day, well before the myriads of New Age imitators its composers spawned, and it remains fresh and vital two decades later. --Bryan Reesman |

Put this album togheter with the follow up Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror by Brian Eno & Harold Budd and you definitly got my favourite ambient album of all time. The best ever. |

After his genre-defining AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, Brian Eno collaborated with minimalist composer Harold Budd for AMBIENT 2: THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR, which proved to be a natural pairing. By taking Budd's solo piano compositions and applying his unique sound treatments, Eno managed to enhance a startlingly spare work, yet keep its simplicity intact. On many tracks, Eno's additional sounds are so subtle that they easily mesh with any background noise that may surround the listener. Budd's delicate piano work, though, is always at the fore, slowly creating a quiet, yet expansive, sonic landscape. Here both musicians are wholly in their element, making this an album of truly astounding beauty. |

archrival-you've got good taste, the pearl is the ultimate album to study to.very relaxing. I've got some stuff by harold budd as well- white arcades is lush, the room and lovely thunder are worth picking up also. Its hard to pick a favorite with eno, I kind of go back and forth. neroli, thursday afternoon, and discreet music are up there. if I got to go with a top three I'd say on land, the pearl, and finally apollo. archrival-I've actually got the pearl and plat. of mir on vinyl. does anyone here listen to robert rich-dark ambient? |

Yeah, I want a really good large ambient collection as well. I was going to buy Music for Airports but I can't remember why I didn't get it. Thanks for the info Archrival, I'm sure to pick his stuff as well as Mr Budds. BTW Archrival, I hope your not offended by this but I think you look a little like Carl Cox. |

They're not exactly new ambient pieces, but have you heard any of Eno's . I experienced myself here in Helsinki a few years ago, and I thought it was amazing. In Eno's words: "I think of shows like this as "music in more dimensions" or perhaps "music for more senses". The music in this installation was made in my studios in London, by a process more similar to painting or collage than conventional music composition. One element in it is nearly 20 years old; most of it was made last week. The music is divided into 8 independent layers, one of which is playing on each CD player. Since these players are not synchronized, the music constantly recombines into different patterns." Needless to say I could just sit in that room all day. :) The "Kite stories" CD is not exactly as mind-blowing as the installation itself but I think it works as a great ambient piece in itself. |
