But you can look out for number one without being a total
git to everyone else. I dislike this idea that everyone who
is wealthy must of done it by screwing someone else over...

Lots of people have a childish notion that others should
look after them. This is nonsense- without capitalism they
would starve.

but come on... everyone can't take care of themselfes. That
is th truth. And yes, I think it's sick how much money some
people can get A month. millions her & billion there. Why
can't I work at mcdonlads 8 h a day and still cant afford to
have a house? the gap is to big!

"I dislike this idea that everyone who
is wealthy must of done it by screwing someone else
over..."

But don't you see. The workers create all the wealth in
society while somebody else appropriates it. This is the
only way by which you get a class society.

Raimons: Bill Gates is only on about £280,000 a year (okay
so he has a lot of money already, but still...). I agree
housing prices take the michael a bit, but that's partly due
to overpopulation leading to a housing shortage.

Jonesy: How does being an IT consultant exploit others? They
pay you well because you save them several times that over
in improving their system...

I used to believe that when people die their wealth should
be redistributed amongst the rest of the populance evenly.
However, upon talking to a few people with children, they
said that one of the things that inspires them to better
themselves is to give their children a better start and to
have something to leave to them when they die. If that's
what makes them happy why shouldn't they be allowed to?

I'm not saying being born into wealth isn't an advantage,
just that to take wealth that people have earned
legitamately is unfair.

Capitalism is fundamentally and ideologically wrong. Unless
you are of the opinion that there is an unlimited amount of
wealth in the world. Then the inevitable outcome of
capitalism is that one group of people will gain more than
another group. It is not correct to say, "but they all have
the same chance to make those billions as everyone else",
because there is only a fixed amount of billions to go
round, and therefore it isn't possible for everyone to have
the same chance.

Therefore it is inevitable that some will gain at the
expense of others... which I believe we should be able to
rise above.
We shouldn't just continue with capitalism because its not
doing too bad for us now. We should be looking forward, and
sideways to our 3rd world brothers and sisters, and coming
up with a sustainable solution.

Capitalism will eat itself

Jonesy,

You are so completely and utterly fucked up its
unbelievable. I really really feel sorry for you. You're
gonna have a real shit life.

Your perception of the world is completely warped. You are
so eaten up with bitterness and resentment at the success
and stability the British (yes thats right the British) have
given to the world and their values that achieve results and
create wealth, freedom and the high standard of living we
take for granted that you just want to tear it all down. You
just want to lash out like some child which has had its
lolly pop taken out of its mouth. Boy you are messed up.

He he, bit extreme... but quite astute.

Anyone read Choke by Chuck Palanhuick? I like the revelation
the main character's mother has regarding her railing
against capitalism. Very true.

Luckypsycho:
Something can't be "idealogically wrong"- for me it is the
only ideology that makes sense. It is utterly logical. Why
is that "wrong"? You might see it as unethical, but that is
another matter...

Housing shortages are caused by a shortage in the number of
houses being built.

with capitalism workers are not paid the full value of what
they produce. The owners (non-workers) exploit the workers,
who benefit from the workers effort.

so just because the owner has the means of production, he
can exploit his workers (who do not have the means of
production)?

Ceri, many wealthy people may very well work very hard, but
there is no way you are going to convince anyone with a
pinch of honesty that there is equal opportunity, and among
those who are struggling many of them are working equally as
hard as the wealthy. i guess your answer to those brought
up with less opportunity would be tough shit and it's not
your problem?

offline xian_ecci from los angeles on 2003-02-28 11:36 [#00574588]

i don't see how Ceri could have an answer for a dilema so
plainly put.

even if you have faith in the common generosity of people,
there will always be those who take more than their share --
which inevitably comes out of someone else's bowl.

on the other side of that coin there are those who are paid
for by taxes, while they are 'productionless'.
social security, welfare, unemployment, worker's
compensation, etc. are part of the system.

it seems that the closest thing to an answer would come from
a flexible (and more evenly spread) taxation system.

opera winfrey is a billionairre. bill gates lost 50 billion
dollars in 5 years, while whole nations go bankrupt. these
facts are ridiculous. enron and the like got busted and
strong reform should be strongly forced by the people.
there are sweatshops all over america, let alone throughout
the world. of course these workers 'deserve' more. social
change is much slower than technilogical demand, which is
the real issue. live simpler.

i watched 'baraka' again the other day...it's amazing what
you can grasp without words.

even welfare systems and the 'redistribution of wealth' have
their inequalities in them.

the people who take more than their fair share should be
dealt with accordingly...

its unlikely that people would ever revolt in our countries
because they have too much to lose. Things such as
mortgages, holidays, jobs... etc. keep people from going
against the capitalist system

This whole argument is not about capitalism. Its about
individuals; it really is. Either you approach life saying
what I can achieve from society or saying what can those who
achieve from society give to me.

You lot don't realise how boring and old these arguments
are. They truly are childish. I know you kinda of feel a bit
let down and things seem hard. And then you think oh well
fuck it things aren't handed to me on a fucking plate so oh
well he seems to have more so I think I just take some of
his. Its weak people; its really fucking weak. I've got
absolutely no respect whatsoever for people who have these
views. The irony of all this is your get to the end of your
silly little lives saying mmm what did my small views really
achieve for me. Mmm diddly squat.

when i was 13 or something i listened a lot to
clawfinger...donät think thier music is that great anymore
but their lyrics still make some sence...

wonderful world

there's a peddler a pusher standing on the corner
there's a junkie on the street with some crack to warm her
down and out in the city she's working as a hooker
so the system took the freedom to overlook her
she don't exist that's made her feel the hate
she's just a victim of the world that we create
she didn't have a chance man she didn't wanna do it
but she never got the choice so she just said screw it
she took it to the bottom just trying it all
knowing that nobody even cared at all
don't deny her needs take a look at yourself
before you start talking 'bout anybody else

such a wonderful world such a wonderful world

there's a lower class family they're living in a vice
you know it ain't too bad but it sure ain't nice
four kids in a flat that was built for two
cockroaches on the floor so what they gonna do
rats in the cellar no water in the tap
the kids of today are growing up with this crap
a sweet loving mother she does everything she can
a father with a will he's a fighting man
he's lost his job and all the money's been spent
so tell me anybody who's gonna pay the rent
and you're all talking 'bout equality
this whole fucking world is insanity

Chorus

meanwhile in a suburb on some fancy boulevard
there's a couple in a house with a dog on guard
3 cars in the garage they keep everything inside
afraid of the violence afraid to go outside
money ain't funny if you're afraid to use it
you grip it too hard when you're afraid to lose it
working as a lawyer in some upperclass area
alone at home his wife goes into hysteria
a gun under her pillow too tense to relax
too rich to face reality too scared to face the facts
they stick to what they got and they try to make it pretty
hiding from the life that's going on down in the city
